Introduction
The article entitled “Towards information leadership” written by Isto Huvila, published in 2014. He is a Senior Lecturer in Information Management at the School of Business and Economics, Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland. His main areas of research include information work and information management, knowledge organisation and participatory information practices. Same goes to this article that has its weaknesses. Besides these criticisms, this paper has some value and we need to judge it in terms of the authors' purpose in writing it. It is not intended to be a precise piece of academic work, but is intended mainly to enhance leadership in information field. As a conclusion, information leadership is about exploiting information resources and infrastructures, but in order to be valuable it should also demonstrate a completely understanding the consequences. The article is basically in line with the descriptions of the concepts discussed in earlier literature that covers definitions of information and knowledge leadership and bring both conceptual and practical clarity to the different aspects of the responsibilities of information and knowledge professionals. This article gives much knowledge that benefit to readers so they can think towards new era of information leadership. Information Literacy is an important skill for the 21st century do to our busy and always on the move schedules. Leadership has been defined in different ways, a definitaion of leadership that would be most commonly accepted would be “the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward the effectiveness and success of the organization…”(House et al., 1999, p. 184 as cited in Yukl, 2013, p. 19). After a comprehensive review of different leadership literature, Stogdill (1974, p. 259, as cited in Yukl, 2013, p. 18) concluded that “There are almost as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have attempted to define the concept." Leadership can be viewed from two different angles one is shared influence process and other as a specialized role. Researcher who view leadership as a specialized role consider attributes as a factor in selecting a designated leader. On the contrast, theorist who emphasises on influence process considers “Leadership” as a social process or a pattern of relationship.
Influencing a group of individuals to achieve a common goal is leadership in its simplest form and the three people responsible for this are Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer; Larry Page, Co-Founder & President, Products; and Sergey Brin, Co-Founder & President, Technology. Overseeing the company's technical and business strategy since 2001, Dr. Schmidt’s leadership has helped the company grow from a startup to a global enterprise while maintaining a culture of strong innovation. Larry Page the founding CEO grew the company to over 200 employees and profitability before moving into his role as president of products. Sergey Brin directs the research efforts of Google with areas of focus in search engines, information extraction from unstructured sources, and data mining of large text collections and scientific data. However Dr. Eric Schmidt, Larry Page, and Sergey Brin all share responsibility for Google’s day-to-day operations (Google Management, 2010).
We live in an era of communication challenges. It is an age of increasingly scarce management and education to the markets of tomorrow. To solve this problem, to improve and restore the competitive edge of business, I recommend teaching leadership as well as organization. We need to move beyond the simplistic and boring, everyday organizational skills commonly taught in core courses in business schools. Important as these skills are, we need to redirect our foci towards the essential ingredient required to put these skills to work – leadership. As Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus have expressed it, “The problem with many organizations…is that they tend to be over managed and under led. There is a profound difference between management and leadership, and both are important.” “To manage” means “to bring about, to accomplish, to have charge or responsibility for, to conduct.” “Leading” is “influencing, guiding in direction, course, action, opinion.” Other characteristics include: motivating and inspiring individuals, providing direction and vision, earning the respect of others, turning talent and efforts into results, and being an excellent communicator and listener.
T.D. Wilson (2002) makes a point of identifying several sources of articles, references and course syllabi with varying takes on knowledge management within organizations. Wilson is convinced that organizations misuse the terminology “knowledge management” and that their activities are more concerned with managing information than with the management of knowledge (Wilson, 2002). Wilson defines knowledge as involving “the mental processes of comprehension” or, as “what we know” and information as the expression of what we know and can convey through messages (Wilson, 2002).
