Abstract
Espen Aarseth is the author of Playing Research: Methodological approaches to game analysis, and Aarseth’s main idea is to promote a methodology for the aesthetic study of games which in turn will provide more advanced approaches for the years to come. We need to look from different perspectives, why do we do it, and who we are. Aarseth looks at the styles of play, and player strata in games which help with our approach to game analysis.
Aarseth gave some great topics that question my beliefs about certain games. Because he gave his own personal experience about

I am the type of player that loves to explore and find new things to try out. The funny thing was I always judged MMO games because of other players’ responses. So given that info I never played it because of them, but Aarseth mentioned that there are different styles of play. So understanding the styles he pointed out that majority of people will have a different take on a game. I wanted to give games a chance and try them out. In Destiny I managed to explore the earth and find a simple cave and kill enemies that spawned out of it (later known as the loot cave), I stood back and realized that they kept spawning and occasionally dropped items which were used to make your character stronger. So I continued to exploit this bug and farmed my items until I had no more space to hold anymore. I was then curious to see if anyone else found the same exploit like me, I went online and lo behold I found discussions about the exploit. This leads to another thing Aarseth spoke …show more content…
Aarseth enjoyed the game and tried different ways of gameplay, he managed to get to a point and was stuck and needed info and used the google search engine to help with his confusion. Looking up the info for his little problem led into a problem that will soon lose his love for the game. What happened was the amount of information that showed up for the walkthrough showed him things that he never knew about like hidden quests, items, and more. This brings me back to my story, when I looked up to see if other people had found the same exploit I then was lead to another link to more places to exploit the game. Then I found more info about secret items and basically boosting your character. So immediately I found about more ways that the game was bugged but for player’s experience. Unlike Aarseth I immediately wanted to do these exploits before they are patched, I know things like this will be patched because of previous exploits I have taken part of in previous games. So I kept looking up info like walk troughs, hidden weapons, and my favorite glitching out of maps. Understanding why Aarseth had this experience is completely alright, everyone will have a different experience towards a game, and it’s all a learning process where we can learn from. I just never knew that anyone can get bored with a game when they just
The Only Game, by Mike Lupica, is about a 6th grade boy named Jack that is very good at baseball. When the book starts out Jack and his old team mates are very excited that baseball season is just about to start up again. They all are out on the field explaining how it looks and smells so great. Then the day arrives that they had all been waiting for, tryouts. Jack explains how it is great to be back at it with his best friend Gus. After tryouts they found out who all made the team and it was basically the same team that they had last year. This year was supposed to be the year that they win the Little League World Series. They had all the offence and defense they needed to go all the way. Last year’s team made it to the World series
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, there are two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story starts off with Rainsford and Rainsford’s hunting partner, Whitney, on a yacht heading to Rio de Janiero to hunt big game animals. Rainsford ends up becoming trapped on Ship-Trap Island, and that is where he and the reader are introduced to General Zaroff. Unfortunately for Rainsford, General Zaroff is not your normal General. General Zaroff and Rainsford are similar and different in many ways, and even though Rainsford believes that Zaroff is a sick individual, at the end of the story he becomes more like Zaroff than he realizes.
Facing hardships, problems, or obstacles shouldn’t discourage one from completing their task or job. Many of authors usually put their characters through tough complications to show the reader that no matter what happens; anyone could pull through. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connel, the main character Mr. Rainsford gets stranded on an eerie island with a bad reputation. He meets General Zaroff and gets thrown into a huge hunting game, where his life is on the line. In the end, he wins the game and will continue to hunt animals, but not people, as the general once did. He will continue to hunt because one, hunting means everything to him. Two, he will not continue the general’s crazy ways, and resort back to the legal and non-dangerous to other humans sport. Third, he feels powerful when he becomes the hunter and not the hunted. Giving up hunting would be like giving up his life, so just because of a minor block he had to overcome, he will not give up hunting.
In his article, “Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter,” author Tom Bissell utilizes pathos to explain the extra life our society is born into when dealing with gaming, making us forget everything happening around us. Bissell gives many examples of his own life and

Being able to overcome anything in life is a great feeling. There is a special feeling in the body and the mind when the body achieves a goal, and the mind gets a feeling of satisfaction. Since, the mind chooses to go against the body's will to quit, you have to be mentally strong. In Richard Connell's short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” large game hunter Sanger Rainsford is tested in the following ways: strong versus the weak, the value of life, and becoming what he fears. To begin with, Rainsford has to pose as the weak against the strong, General Zaroff.
The play is an eternal challenge, a lock with many keys, none of which ever fits perfectly. Every interpretation presents just a portion of the possibilities. Every new version opens up new vistas, without limiting further experimentation. Every generation comes, looks, and studies the play, but never comes up with all the answers.
Tom Bissell presents an article in 2010, to college students of which is “Why Video Games Matter.” Bissell isn’t intending for the argument to be about video game criticism, the history of the gaming, or an assessment of anything. On the contrary, he wants to articulate his own opinions and thoughts on what playing games feels like, why he plays them, and the questions they make him think about. Being a gamer myself, I have also endured the struggles of what being obsessed with a video game feels like. It is understood that when first purchasing a video game, all one thinks about is getting home and popping it in the console, disregarding everything else that is happening in the vicinity.
Some people say that the love between a mother and her daughter is forever; but what about the understanding? In the case of Waverly Jong and her mother in the story “Rules of the Game,” by Amy Tan, there is much miscommunication and misunderstanding. The story is set in mid-1950’s Chinatown and as the story opens, it is Christmas time. “Rules of the Game” is the telling of how a little girl learns to be more independent but falls into conflict with her mother along the way and becomes a type of trophy. Amy Tan uses elements such as character, symbolism, and setting to portray the themes of struggle between two cultures and independence perfectly in “Rules of the Game.”
There are many games that come to mind when thinking about how to increase productivity and how to bring a group closer together. While many games could be fitting, the game that stuck out is, Family Feud. Family Feud is an American game show that emphasizes teamwork. Family Feud has been rated by TV Guide as the third rated game show of all time. This game is played by two families battling against each other. The battles are families fighting to name the most popular answers to the surveys Family Feud has researched. On the show, there are five people in a family and each person in the family has to contribute to their “team.” Each round begins with one member of the family battling a member from the other team to see which person buzzes
Well, since I was a little boy, I have always loved video games. There was something about it that made me feel great. While I didn’t know what it was back then, I believe I have an answer now. It’s about the journey, the adventure of playing a video game. When you pick up a controller or log on to a PC game, you are entering a world of vast possibilities and endless adventures. I’ve had so much fun jumping into the world of a video game. The experience of doing so is unlike anything else. I also play video games for the connection that I get when playing with others. Whether it’s with friends or complete strangers, it can be a lot of fun to interact with others in a virtual world, competing or cooperating with them. It’s also about that first time experience playing a video game. It’s unlike anything else I have ever done in my life. Let’s take Destiny again for example. Destiny’s raids, the quests that I mentioned earlier, not only require a tremendous amount of teamwork and patience but also require a fair amount of skill, as these activities are some of the most difficult activities a player can attempt. Allow me to clarify even more. In Destiny’s raids, there is a boss battle at the end, a final showdown that will prove that our team can conquer anything. They also boast a ton of great loot to obtain at the end. So when our team has been attempting a boss encounter for hours to no avail, it

Before diving into my research, I reflected on the knowledge I already knew regarding play and play based learning. From experience, I know that play is an enjoyable activity for children, and even some adults. I know that there are different ways one can play. For example, playing with others is known as cooperative play and playing alone is considered solitary play. There are different types of play. For example, there is dress up or pretend games, which is considered dramatic, play and there is playing with building blocks which is constructive play. After my reflection I realized that I was more knowledgeable on the action of playing rather then the benefits of it.
We should develop games that people want to spend time on that are also educational, increasing the attention span of people, visual acuity, and multitasking abilities of all generations. The author very effectively portrays her message of by connecting with her audience charismatically, visually, personally, and logically. In the age of technology we must come to terms with the changing hobbies and daily activities around us. Rather than passing them off as bad campaigning for them to be cut back, censored, we should be focusing on the good that is already done by video games and how we could continue to improve
