In this research, I conducted a critical discourse analysis, which implies a thorough analysis of the text under the light of the concepts mentioned in the theoretical framework. The concepts helped me, in placing the study, in the wide discipline of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). In addition the movie of the 1st part also aided me in understanding the text better, so, it was watched closely. CDA focuses on “the way social power abuse, dominance, and inequality are enacted, reproduced, and resisted by text and talk in the social and political context” (Schiffrin, Tannen, & Hamilton, 2001). It entails a lot of understanding of concepts related to power, dominance, how they are misused and consequently, result in social inequality. Moreover, it is a multidisciplinary field and requires a detailed insight of text, talk, society, power, thoughts and cultures. For this reason, I plan to conduct a thorough analysis of the first book from the Hunger Games trilogy; i.e.: The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008). I gave an overview of the trilogy in the Introduction, so that the readers do not have any difficulty, whatsoever, in understanding the story and its development. I linked these two notions, to bring forth the covert ideologies of the text of the novel, which form the basis of the power discourse prevalent throughout the story. These ideas, then, transform into an analytical method, which help me situate the study in the infinitely vast area of Critical Discourse Analysis. Moreover, these concepts also aided me to delimit the research, with a focus on power structures and how they work in the fictional context of Panem. For the first Research Question which studied the establishment and maintenance of power discourse, I aimed at highlighting the linguistic choices of the powerful and the powerless, respectively. This was done in accordance with the principles of CDA that assert that language choices present and produce certain ideologies. Moreover CDA also argues and brings into focus the idea that language is a social phenomenon and hence requires a context to function in.
