In our The Poison of Unforgiveness piece, I collaborated with my peers in contriving the concepts of our work and incorporating our gifts and talents to compose an exceptional presentation. Although I was unable to pick exactly who I worked with, I am more than overjoyed to have had the opportunity to work with Cynthia, Gabrielle, and Tammisha to create “The Poison of Unforgiveness”. Particularly, I appreciate them so by virtue of the idea that even before we seriously began planning the presentation, we frequently engaged in discourse about the critical concepts discussed in class — in order to foster maximized understanding and connectivity to each other and the concepts. In the opening scenes, the woman declares to tear her guard down, becoming naked, raw, ready to love and be loved (interpretive dance). Later, she texts and eventually has a girlfriend outing with one of her close friends to confide in her about her fear yet new found courage + trust in her and her boyfriend 's union/bond. However, just as she has decided to trust him, she finds that he has blatantly broken their commitment. When an incoming text appears on her “friend’s” phone, she finds that her boyfriend has broken their monogamous relationship agreement by becoming emotionally available for another woman… the woman being her “close friend”. *Her close friend that she was telling her secrets about her relationship to?!… ouch! The two main themes, forgiveness and betrayal are ever so present in The Poison of Unforgiveness. However, the plot is different in a few ways. Most notably, we found it important to document the fact that it took great strength for the woman to get over her fear of being heartbroken — in order to trust her boyfriend in the first place. Furthermore, in Sula Nel forgives only her husband — but not her best girlfriend (which marks the rejection of feminist logic). In our adaptation, she willingly forgives both her friend and her boyfriend (… but for her own personal sanity). Finally, in Beyonce’s “Forgiveness” chapter of Lemonade Beyonce provides her husband, who betrayed her, with a card of redemption. However, in our adaptation, the girl dances to “Sand Castles” only as a solidification and mark of truly being free of the poison of unforgiveness. In contrast to Beyonce’s version, she does not actually take her boyfriend back or stays close friends with the girl— but she genuinely forgives both of them. Her forgiveness is symbolized as the flower blooms in the dark room — exploring her resilience in spite of betrayal. We believed these changes were imperative because they provide a critical lens of how fair and counter-patriarchal forgiveness materializes in platonic friendships versus romantic relationships. The novel A Separate Peace by John Knowles and “A Poison Tree” by William Blake, display how one must forgive their friends for forgiveness is the only way to separate friends from enemies. After an accident, in A Separate Peace Finny, his best friend forgives him immediately, while the rest of their class suspect Gene had malicious intent. Similarly, William Blake forgives his friend promptly in his poem, nonetheless, he holds a grudge against his enemy till his anger explodes. Both works show how a powerful friendship can overcome adversity; conversely, those distrusted face anger.
Within every story or poem, there is always an interpretation made by the reader, whether right or wrong. In doing so, one must thoughtfully analyze all aspects of the story in order to make the most accurate assessment based on the literary elements the author has used. Compared and contrasted within the two short stories, “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, and John Updike’s “A&P,” the literary elements character and theme are made evident. These two elements are prominent in each of the differing stories yet similarities are found through each by studying the elements. The girls’ innocence and naivety as characters act as passages to show something superior, oppression in society shown towards women that is not equally shown towards men.

In both Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate and Robinson Jeffers’ Medea hypocrisy and familial oppression engender subversion of societal convention and gender norms in Medea and Tita; who thus strive to attain justice and defeat their oppressors, albeit through different means. It appears as though, in both works, it is the acts of the family and society against the women, which consequently extinguish or smother some sort of romantic love, that are the root cause of their subversive actions. Needless to say, both protagonists strive to uproot their oppressors and either enact vengeance or kindle a romance. Both women go against their pre-designated role in society, and at times ironically dominate over their male counterparts. The way both characters finally attain freedom and defeat their oppressor is by directly defying them, by going against established cultural and gender roles. Incidentally the feminist sentiment that naturally accompanies this is purposeful, and is used by the authors to show how women need to be powerful in order to attain what they want in a male dominated society. The final ways they conquer their oppressors is by freeing themselves symbolically and becoming outsiders that are away from the all too unjust world they knew.
Finally, even though, for a long time, the roles of woman in a relationship have been established to be what I already explained, we see that these two protagonists broke that conception and established new ways of behaving in them. One did it by having an affair with another man and expressing freely her sexuality and the other by breaking free from the prison her marriage represented and discovering her true self. The idea that unites the both is that, in their own way, they defied many beliefs and started a new way of thinking and a new perception of life, love and relationships.
As the women narrate the harm caused by men, they lose track of the beings that they once were and become different people in order to cause a reaction in others. These women are hurt in ways that cause them to change their way of living. Diamant’s magic enables a romance to flower from violence and the formulation of a “voiceless cipher” into an ingenious being transpire (1). She forces the reader see that in the eyes of trial and tragedy, happiness and love, we find reflections of ourselves no matter the age gap. She emphasizes that such a task could not happen if not for the “scolding, teaching, cherishing, giving, and cursing one with different fears (2),” that “summon up the innumerable smiles, tears, sighs and dreams of human life” (321). All this, Diament reminds all females, can be sequestered in the red tent.
“Like a river flows so surely to the sea darling, so it goes some things are meant to be.” In literature there have been a copious amount of works that can be attributed to the theme of love and marriage. These works convey the thoughts and actions in which we as people handle every day, and are meant to depict how both love and marriage can effect one’s life. This theme is evident in both “The Storm” by Kate Chopin and “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Gilman; both stories have the underlying theme of love and marriage, but are interpreted in different ways. Both in “The Storm” and in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” the women are the main focus of the story. In “The Storm” you have Calixta, a seemingly happy married woman who cheats on her husband with an “old-time infatuation” during a storm, and then proceeds to go about the rest of her day as if nothing has happened when her husband and son return. Then you have “The Yellow Wallpaper” where the narrator—who remains nameless—is basically kept prisoner in her own house by her husband and eventually is driven to the point of insanity.
Yunior starts to become conscious of “what a f*cking chickensh*t coward [he is] and admits to be “astounded by the depths of [his] mendacity” (14). Yunior realizes that he is selfish and inconsiderate towards the feelings of other women. Yunior is shocked of himself and his tendency to lie. He notices that his lying and cheating ways can really hurt women and he feels bad about himself. After a long time of suffering, the narrator finally gains a true understanding of his wrongdoings. The protagonist is filled with regret with the way he treats women and the fact that his cheating ways gets him nowhere. He confesses the truth that his ex “ did the right thing” by leaving him (14). Yunior starts to register that he is unable to ever get over his ex fiance and he regrets cheating on her. He is saying that he does not deserve her because all that he ever gave her were lies and deceit. She is fortunate enough to be able to escape the pain and hurt that he brought along with him. This creates the central idea that cheaters are the ones who really play themselves. The narrator expected that his cheating manner will be beneficial to him, but it is like a slap to the face. Cheating does not get you anywhere in life and only brings suffering in the end. He now understands that when you do something bad, bad things will come back to you. The daughter alludes to an idea that her mother was also judged harshly and made to feel ashamed. By the daughters ability to see through her mothers flaws and recognize that she was as wounded as the child was, there is sense of freedom for both when the daughter find her true self. Line such as “your nightmare of weakness,” and I learned from you to define myself through your denials,” present the idea that the mother was never able to defeat those that held her captive or she denied her chance to break free. The daughter moments of personal epiphany is a victory with the mother because it breaks a chain of self-loathing or hatred. There is pride and love for the women they truly were and is to be celebrated for mother and daughter.

Mariam and Laila are considerate, bold and protective while all their rights as humans are being oppressed. They can be courageous when there is everything to be afraid of, yet they take the risk, because they know it is right. Both will protect when they haven’t been protected from the danger of oppression. Laila and Mariam can be sympathetic in an inconsiderate world. Together, Mariam and Laila exemplify the hidden defiance against oppression, a burning fire counterattacking the darkness.
