After reading and deeply analyzing Gerard Hopkins’s “God’s Grandeur,” I had a new clarification of God’s unconditional love for the human race. The components of this piece of literature exemplify the roles, both good and bad, that we play in our world; but more importantly, the role that we play in God’s eyes. I realized that the theme of this poem is to proclaim the splendor of our king’s undeserving love and his endowment through the symbolism, diction, and structure displayed in the Italian Petarchan sonnet. Immediately, Hopkins uses the symbol of “the world,” to represent mankind, and the symbol of “grandeur of God,” or the fruits and resources that we can concur were freely given as the responsibility of mankind (line 1). Hopkins’s use of diction along with the structure that he pans out is cohesive in representing the theme of God’s all enduring love as well. The sonnet is written in Iambic pentameter, meaning that each line leads with a stressed syllable, followed by an unstressed syllable, and follows this pattern for five feet. Hopkins’s use of this type structure created a fluidity in the poem which made it easier for me to uncover its underlying theme. The “abba,” and “cdcd” rhyme schemes represented also add to the fluidity of the poem, while emphasizing the shift between diction in the octave and sestet. In the octave, or eight line stanza, Hopkins uses more of a negative connotation through the diction to express the negative role that mankind has played throughout generations, while in the sestet, or the six line stanza, he illustrates the diction with a much more formal and harmonious connotation. Hopkins’s implementation of how well the structure of his poem and his use of diction coincided magnified the theme of God’s love for us from the reader’s perspective. His use of diction, paired with the structure of the poem built feelings of anticipation and serenity inside me, and left the sonnet on replay inside of my mind. Reflecting back on Gerard Hopkins’s poem “God’s Grandeur,” I have a better understanding of the true “Grandeur” that Hopkins is trying to translate. It is not what God has physically bestowed upon us, or even the fact that we do not deserve life itself. There is something about the human spirit that causes us to rejoice in shared experience. We can connect on a deep level with our fellow man when we believe that somehow someone else understands us as they relate their own joys and hardships; and perhaps nowhere better is this relationship expressed than in that of the poet and his reader. For the current assignment I had the privilege (and challenge) of writing an imitation of William Shakespeare’s "Sonnet 87". This poem touched a place in my heart because I have actually given this sonnet to someone before as it then communicated my thoughts and feelings far better than I could. For this reason, Sonnet 87 was an easy choice for this project, although not quite so easy an undertaking as I endeavored to match Shakespeare’s structure and bring out his themes through similar word choice.

Holy Sonnet XV deals with the question of reciprocal love that runs throughout Donne’s religious poetry. The Sonnet is an address of the speaker’s mind to the speaker’s soul; it is a meditation on the Trinity and man’s relationship to God. The poem’s form and the multi-layered conflation throughout expound upon the nature of the Trinity. The theme of humility in reciprocal religious love or receiving and understanding God’s glory (as Donne understood it) runs throughout the poem. This allows the speaker’s soul to understand his own need for humility in order to love god fully. Donne uses the Sonnet form cunningly in this poem; the formal divisions of the Sonnet reflect the trinity, with three four-line sections, while the inner workings of the poem expound upon God’s love for mankind and the need for humility. The poem’s rhyme scheme is abba/abba/cddc/ee. This formally divides the poem into three four part sections that move from the spiritual to the physical downward through the Trinity, increasing tangibility with regard to the physical and allowing the speaker to achieve a closer relationship with God through Christ.

The similar rhyme schemes of the two sonnets allow for clear organization of the speaker’s ideas and support these ideas through comparison and connection. Both poems use or essentially use a Shakespearean rhyme scheme to provide rhythm for their sonnets, while adding extra emphasis to the topics presented throughout them. Owen uses the rhyme scheme in a way to stress his description of the enraged scene of the battlefield, and to further the dehumanization of the soldiers at war. The simile used to compare the soldiers to “cattle”, is connected to the fast “rattle” of the rifles, furthering the image of the inhumane way the soldiers we killed (1,3). Owen alters the Shakespearean rhyme scheme in the eleventh line making a switch to create two lines in a row that rhyme, rather than alternating.
Granted that Donne's personification of God reduces the deity from an almighty force to a human archetype, divinity is not undermined. Living in a period of important religious and cultural flux, John Milton's poetry reflects the many influences he found both in history and in the contemporary world. With a vast knowledge of literature from the classical world of Greek and Roman culture, Milton often looked back to more ancient times as a means of enriching his works. At other times, however, he relies on his strong Christian beliefs for creating spiritually compelling themes and deeply religious imagery. Opening the poem in a setting rich with mythological figures and scenery, then deliberately moving into a distinctly Christian setting, Milton touches upon two personally relevant issues: poetry and Christian redemption. In this way, Lycidas both addresses the subject of being a poet in a life doomed by death and at the same time shows the triumphant glory of a Christian life, one in which even the demise of the poet himself holds brighter promises of eternal heavenly joy.
The fourteen line sonnet is constructed by three quatrains and one couplet.
