The article Police Integrity: Rankings of Scenarios on the Klockars Scale by “Management Cops,” conveys that the different scenarios for each definition and the nature of police work make this corruption difficult to specifically define (Vito 153). As crime and arrest rates continue to climb, prisons across the nation, and even the world are beginning to experience immense overcrowding, placing a burden on both the prison personnel and inmate population. Nevertheless, this scenario is nothing unusual for anyone who has either worked some time for served some time in almost any prison. With most prison staff members suffering from high levels of stress from the unbearable workloads placed upon them, work conditions are starting to be considered near impossible, which is completely unacceptable. However, it’s to be expected if you work in a prison. So, what does the correctional department do to address this issue? Surely, officials aren’t apprehending a lesser amount of individuals who commit petty crimes or drive under the influence. Needless to say, what should an organization, like the criminal justice system do with low-risk offenders to keep them from clogging up the cells in jails and soaking up unnecessary tax money? Well, the only true way to eliminate a growing prison population is to discuss, analyze, and apply prison alternatives as possible criteria for sentencing, as well as rehabilitation. Alternatives such as probation, parole, and community service will help keep prison populations at bay and within a manageable rate. In addition, tax dollars can be utilized for another issue, while low-risk criminal offenders can give back to the community by performing duties mandated by the legal system. The idea is to lessen the stress from prison overcrowding and leave vacancy open for those convicted of capital crimes. However, those apprehended for committing miniscule crimes may just need some rehabilitation to get their lives straightened out. Community-based sentenci...
Correctional officers are tasked with maintaining order and security within overcrowded facilities, which can be challenging and sometimes dangerous. This can have a direct impact on the well-being and effectiveness of staff, potentially compromising the safety of both inmates and personnel. From a societal perspective, prison overcrowding contributes to higher costs for taxpayers. As the prison population grows, so does the financial burden of maintaining and operating these facilities. Taxpayer money that could be allocated to other essential services such as education, healthcare, and social welfare is instead spent on building and maintaining prisons, exacerbating economic inequalities and social
Strategies to generate profit not only come as a disadvantage for the inmates but also for the population. Governmental corruption has taken a deep hold on the nation’s correctional institutions through donations from lobby groups as incentive
The textbook explained in detail the process of research, and the significance of research studies that are helpful in developing policies, practices, and programs in the field of criminal justice. After looking at Cumberland County Sheriffs Detective unit, I feel the need for research is even stronger. The variety of services that is provided by the unit are evaluated on a yearly basis to show the effectiveness of each program. I feel being evaluated on a yearly basis can address immediate policy concerns that may arise. Based on my research with the Cumberland County Sheriffs Detective unit and the responses to from the informational interview questions, I don’t feel any changes are needed at this time regarding how the managers of the Detective unit use evaluation research.
...s, public defense providers are committed to providing zealous and high-quality representation and their leaders advocate for criminal justice systems that are fair and equitable. Experientially, attorneys, social workers, investigators, and other staff know the difference they make on the lives of people and communities. However, it is difficult to effectively advocate in the budgetary and policy arena when there is little or no data about our systems or their impact on important outcomes. Our inability to measure client outcomes and assess system performance makes it difficult, if not impossible, for the defense community to quantify the social and economic benefits of a high-quality, well-resourced public defense system.
The Impact of Corruption Since the first law was written, the law enforcement community has been confronted with many allegations that officers have violated the public's trust by engaging in criminal acts of corruption. Many aspects of policing have changed over time; however, one aspect that has remained quite unchanged is the existence of corruption. Police corruption is a complicated issue and a growing problem in the United States today. Corruption in law enforcement is usually viewed as the misuse of authority by a police officer acting to realize personal needs or desires. Unfortunately, it has become far too common, that on any given day, a local newspaper will often display an article about a police officer that got caught committing
The entire concept of an organizational change being handled sensitively with the entire culture being considered is in stark contrast to the paramilitary model where the climate is not conducive to change. Large police agencies and correctional systems are organized in a bureaucratic hierarchy. They have a clear chain of command that is rampant with formality that often makes it difficult to institute any type of change (Stojkovic et al., 2008). The top-down hierarchy considers only the organization as a whole, with top level administrators making the decisions for everyone. The lack of concern for subordinates often creates a climate of hostility that can often breed insubordination, but leave little room for alteration.
We need the children to grow up and have a more positive outlook on law enforcement. A lot of programs are not used as often as they should because of budget issues and pressures (Massey, 2014). Funding is a problem, but maybe cuts can be done elsewhere or the community can work together and fund it. The uniting factor within a community has been lacking over the years. A strategy called Community-oriented policing needs to be conducted more often.
If the officers view their agency as fair and just in managerial and organizational practices, they are less likely to engage in police misconduct. Furthermore, police administrations might find it impossible to be responsive to all the needs of his or her constituents because of political influences that could lead to job loss. Police departments are accountable to local, state, and federal agencies; and consequently, this political pressure pervades policing and may conflict with internal pressures making the situation even more difficult and stressful for policing. Research on organizational and institutional influences is of critical importance as it can help guide the implementation of effective management strategies to reduce incidences of police
