I visited the Riverwalk Gallery in Fond du Lac, on February 14th, 2016. This art gallery had many creative art pieces that I found interesting and I would like to share three pieces of art with you. In the three pieces of art that I will be sharing with you, I will be describing, explaining, and analyzing them so you can see why I found these art pieces interesting. The first piece of art that I picked was called Paper Crane by Anoush Cowles. In this work of art, Cowles used mixed media and detritus. She used a wide variety of colors in this piece of art including; orange, yellow, brown, green, and blue. Some of the shapes she used were triangles circles, and rectangles. She made it out of lots of scraps to put the beautiful piece of art together …show more content…
The elements she used were color which was for the crane so it would be a different color than the water. She used line for the crane's legs, feathers, and water. She used organic shapes for the crane so you can see the structure of the crane’s body. The principle that Cowles used the most was emphasis in the crane because it stands out and is the focal point. When I first looked at this piece of art the first thing I saw was the crane. The reason why I choose this piece of art is because it was detailed and showed me that you can make a piece of art out of scraps instead of always using new constuction paper. The thing that I like about the piece of art is how the colors in the crane are colors that all clash with each other. The only thing that I dislike would be the background because it has a lot of white open space. The second piece of art that I chose was called Garden of Thoughts by Barb Zahn. In this work of art, Zahn used mixed media and detritus. She used multiple of different colors including; green, blue, yellow, red and orange. She used organic shapes for all the flowers she created. In the art piece she used different cutouts of texts and used them creatively in the flowers. Her flowers are very detailed including the stem of the …show more content…
Line is being used as she outlined all of her objects she created in the piece of art. She involves organic shapes mainly in the flower and the space is very well used. The principles she used are unity because the same colors are being used in different shapes. Also, contrast is being used because the background and the flowers are darker on the outside, then as you see the middle is lighter. The reason why I chose this piece of art is because the background made the flower pop and the flowers make me think about fun and happy times. The thing that I liked about the art piece is how she made the background only one color so the attention is drawn to the flowers. The one thing that I dislike about the piece of art is how in the bottom left hand corner she put the colors of the rainbow together. I feel like it does not go with the rest of the art piece. The last piece of art that I chose is called Bloomion’ Detritus by Sharon Cowles. In this work of art Cowles used detritus and watercolor. She used a variety of colors including; purple, blue, yellow, brown green, pink, and red. She used rectangles for the windows in the library and also used organic shapes for the flowers. She made cutouts from a book of Charlie Brown and used characters, texts, and pictures to put in some of the petals of the
The historical painting I chose for my final, is an illustration of Bret Harte’s novel, Her Letter, His Response, and Her Last Letter, creatively illustrated by Arthur Ignatius Keller in 1905. The historical painting I chose for the comparison of Arthur Keller’s painting is another painting done by Arthur I Keller; illustrated for 54-40 or Fight by Emerson Hough, in 1909. Arthur I Keller is a very natural, elegant style painter, with an eye for natural beauty. Keller’s many paintings express intricate detail, and genuine quality. Although I picked two water color paintings out of Arthur Keller’s many collections of paintings, he also uses charcoal, acrylics, oils, and pastels to create other works of art. In both paintings I chose, Arthur Keller uses water color and gouache to paint people. Arthur’s first painting I mentioned, illustrating “Her Letter” is a more detailed painting. Keller uses water color to create a graceful look to his painting; his delicate balance of color, keeps the viewer’s eyes wandering around the painting. The focal point in the painting does not catch the viewer’s eyes because of heavy, dark colors, but because of the proportion differences of the people he implies. The painting gives off a very old fashioned feel, in a tasteful way. Arthur Keller’s second painting, illustrating “54-40 or Fight” has a completely different color theme, and gives off more of a mysterious, dark feel to it. The painting is detailed, but in a more simple way, and there is less negative space. As to where Keller’s “Her Letter” painting had a lot of open areas on the canvas, this painting, displays two people in a small enclosed dark room. The focal point is more dramatic, and a lot more obvious because instead of using sizing,...
Her work resembles fossils and botanical illustration pages at the same time. Her simplicity and willingness to give back to her community is also an attribute I admire of her. Her work is important because of it has been used a medium to convey precious memories through the preservation of flowers. This artist inspires me because of her mastery of such a simple technique to create beautifully simplistic, yet intricately detailed works. This is an aesthetic I hope to achieve in my personal work because of my love of detail and organic shapes, such as flowers. It is amazing how she has achieved such wonderfully detailed and organic shapes using a medium that I never thought to be used in such an organic
The room was set up by having paintings on the walls with a sculpture directly in the center. This was the focal point of the room, Soundsuit, by Nick Cave. This piece was rich in color and character and I was immediately drawn to it. When I rounded the corner of the gallery there were many extravagant pieces such as Untitled #8 (2014) by Mickalene Thomas and Woman Under Willow (2014). Both pieces are inspired by Matisse, rich in color, and represent woman. The American gallery does a good job transitioning from one piece to another because each work is similar in some aspects. This gallery was less organized and different mediums were presented all throughout. There was a traditional quilt, Tar Beach 2 (1990) displayed in the same area as mediums such as wooden panels, oil pastel, and the metal hood of a car. This gallery and collection inspired by Matisse displayed many breathtaking works that I enjoyed seeing.
I agree with this statement because color is important and the color makes the picture brighter. When you color with different colors you can see the different lines of the paint that you couldn’t see before or that was hard to see without the paint. Some of the sculptures already have color in them when the artist is done making them. Like in the picture there is some white and black in the sculpture. But if the artist would but some color to the face it would show the lips, eyes, and nose a lot better. Also the color in the sculpture will make it stand out and I like to use color when I am coloring or when I am painting something because it brightens up my mood and it makes it look prettier I think. Some people just like the color black and white because they like the natural. They might also like it because it will look better on that one
My first piece of artwork that I found interesting is called “Portrait of a Collagist” by an African American artist name Benny Andrews in 1989. His artwork is mainly abstract impressionism and realism and the medium he likes to use and is using in the particular piece is oil and collage on canvas and stands roughly 92inx51in. In this piece his work is abstract and realism, as is most of his pieces. (Source?)
To create more sympathy on the viewer, he used the abstract art, using the circle to represent for children (it looks like a dumbbell on her shoulder). He was smart when using a rectangle combined with the affected of linear perspective was created
The first piece of art that really stuck out to me was The Promenade under the Railroad Bridge by Claude Monet. When I first saw it, I felt like the setting was something out of some type of movie. It actually reminded me of a scene from Pride and Prejudice, when Mr. Darcy was walking toward Ms. Elizabeth. The work is an oil painting and was done in 1874. I feel like this made the painting a blurred look and like the day depicted could have been windy from the way the trees and bushes seem to be leaning over to one set side. It caught my attention because it looked like some type of peaceful, relaxing escapade and that the characters in it were having a pleasant encounter.
The mixed reaction I have towards the painting is because, first off, I still wouldn’t know what is really behind it or what it’s trying to tell us without looking at it from a distance. When I looked at it from a computer desktop I could see a shoe, a mountai...
The visual devices used were concentric circles and rectangular buildings I stated the visual art elements were intertwined with the principles of design. The tall rectangular shapes portrayed skyscraper towers in New York City. Industry was portrayed through the smoke and the man with the suitcase stepping up the cog wheel. I saw a man figure in the middle playing a saxophone and assumed he was the subject matter. There was a use of gestural lines to create form of a 3-D effect with the buildings, as well as the smoke floating in the air, the people figures, the shadows, and the wheel of life. There were uses with the secondary hue green, which has value starting with a light green by the statue of liberty in the concentric circles darkening with each circle. The green cool color with a use of a neural color of brown for the buildings was how the picture was portrayed. Great space was used for overlapping objects, like the people and buildings. The buildings had a two-point perspective due to the angles they are pointing at. Symmetrical balance was achieved with the use of colors, line, and shapes (to take up space). There was a sense of movement with the man holding the briefcase, which looked like he was walking up stairs. Unity and Variety were accomplished using the use of color, shape, line, etc. The painting is
Banana Flower by Georgia O’Keeffe and The Holy Family with a Kneeling Monastic Saint by Elisabetta Sirani are the two pieces of artwork I chose to compare. Banana Flower is one of Georgia O’Keeffe’s many charcoal drawings. It is said that her love for nature inspired a lot of her flower drawings. Banana Flower is an example of dry media. Dry media includes charcoal, chalk, metalpoint, pastel, and graphite. This particular drawing was made using charcoal. Charcoal has to be used on a special type of paper with a rough surface. Charcoal is made from burnt wood and smudges very easily. Fortunately, a synthetic resin fixative has been invented to refrain charcoal from smudging. This flower has shades of light and dark black and gray. Shadows are cast along the flower as well. The technique used to determine how light or dark the charcoal appears is based off of how much pressure the hand uses while it is bearing down on the paper. If the charcoal is held like a pencil it can create thinner lines. Thicker and bolder lines can be made by holding the charcoal on its side.
see the type of elements the artist has used and how different elements can complement each
It’s beautiful, but for some scenes (like the fighting scene), it can be too much. In comic fighting scenes, everything moves fast. You would want to know what happened in the next panel immediately. It’s unlikely (at least for me) to savor the background scenery. So those vibrant colors could be distracting
The art piece I chose was a pottery that I found very interesting, not only the art itself but the story behind it. This was a red-figure archaic type of pottery; the name of the pottery is called a Terracotta hydria, which is also known as a water jar. This specific pot was made in Greece and South Italy, around 340-330BC. It was also found at Canosa before the year 1878. According to the MET museum “This pot was created by a group of BM F 308, the specific artist is unknown. However, the potter and art was produced in Greek, South Italy, and Apulia.”
Starting with visual elements I saw lines, implied depth, and texture. I see lines by him using lines created by an edge. Each line is curved not straight but it works with the piece. By using this he creates the piece to make it whole. He uses many curved lines within the painting I don’t know if there is a straight line in the whole thing. The next element I saw was implied depth. Using linear perspective you can see the mountains but they look smaller than the rest of the piece. They are the vanishing point in the back making it look as if you can walk down and they will get closer and closer to you. The last element that I saw was texture. They talk about Van Gogh’s painting, The Starry Night having texture through a two- dimensional surface, in which this painting has that similar feel. Van Gogh uses thick brush stokes on his paintings to show his feelings. There is actually a name for this called, Impasto,
This piece shows how the disaster of a tornado is harmful to the town and also the artist used toy solder it also indicates how war affects the community and the young children. This shows how the artiest combined symbols to show her different views to towards the subject matter. The second piece done what I liked at was done by Laurn Scanlon, 2011, Gates of Steel (Helen) Is related to “1.Content that arises from the aspect of the artwork that is understood as representational.” Mcevilley.
