The Korean War is seen to by many to be a turning point it technology both civilian and military. The development and rapidly deployment of high flying jet aircraft forced both sides in this conflict to deploy countermeasures. This countermeasures ranged from aircraft, motorized gun turrets, and anti-aircraft artillery, these countermeasures would later become the foundation to more modern day air defense systems. In the earlier stages of this conflict, both sides deployed weapons such as the 37MM Automatic Air Defense Gun M1939 (61-K), the 85MM Air Defense gun M1939 (52-K), 100MM Air Defense gun KS-19, and the 90MM Gun M1/M2/M3.     Army. Unfortunately fratricide was a reoccurring issue during this battle as well. Due to the lack of training and knowledge of aircraft identification, American AAA gunners and infantryman shot down several friendly planes in the heat of this battle, including several easily identifiable P-38 fighter planes. Those mistakes could have easily been avoided had the soldiers of that time been instructed of proper identification of both friendly and enemy targets. The primary focus of the battle of Kasserine was that of a technical aspect, and in no form tactical. Aside from poor aircraft identification, there was also minimal training in combining air support with maneuvering ground troops on the battle field. This supreme poverty of training in turn led to yet more fratricide and loss of friendly life. A positive lesson learned was that the most effective means of Air Defense during the battle was the use of mounting two and four .50-caliber M2 machine guns on half-tracks. One aspect that proved to be ineffective was the 37mm guns, which failed to stop or destroy the German tanks. Aware of this fact, the U.S. Army began the development of armor piercing shells and anti-tank guns. The U.S. Army was mindful of the shortcomings during the battle of Kasserine Pass and only weeks after refined and revamped its tactics and strategies in air support, amour fighting, and artillery.     As a veteran of the Air Force I’ve had a chance to both witness and work with some of these technologies that I will be discussing throughout this paper. I had a chance to be trained for using a CMOS based program for planning loads on aircraft. The program was very user friendly and fast. This program handled the mathematical part of loading planes such as weight, size, and balance capacities. It also served as logistical database for tracking what cargo increments would be deployed, where they needed to go, when they could be expected to leave, and the estimated time of arrival at the destination. I was also trained on how to plan loads on paper with both graphical and mathematical problem solving in the event of computer failure. Let me tell you, this was a chore and if it wasn’t right the first time I simply had to start from scratch again with the equations. The luxury of the computer was that I could make changes and receive real time reflective information while I made the changes. My skills with this program were called upon during operation DESERT THUNDER. We were able to plan and mobilize over half of the 2nd largest Air Force base in the Unites States in only two days. This helped deter a war with Iraq by proving just how fast we were able to move on any threats that they had against the U.S. This is an example of how technology helped to deter a threat by simply “flexing our muscle”, a term the D.O.D uses to describe deterrence through readiness and firepower. Without the technological advances of our advanced logistical support systems this process could have easily taken 6 to 10 times longer and operation DESERT THUNDER could have resulted in a wa...
