Earning rightful, satisfying vengeance is a pleasure anybody would want after someone has done them wrong. The Count of Monte Cristo holds vengeance as one of its outstanding themes. In the beginning of the novel, the main character Edmond Dantes is swindled and thrown into the Chateau d’If by the three antagonists Danglars, Fernand Mondego, and Caderousse. As a result, Dantes suffers for fourteen years in a prison cell as his life was ruined just as it was getting started. Years after escaping the prison with the advice of the wise and resourceful Abbe Faria, Dantes carefully planned and executed the majority of his vengeance unto those who’ve wronged him. Even though the fates of Albert, Villefort, and Danglars didn’t dissolve into a harsh punishment such as death, the revenge of the main character is justified. Connect quote back to original point!!! dishonoring his father, but forgives him before the fight started. Albert says, “I therefore say to you, count, that you were right to avenge yourself on my father, and I, his son, thank you for not having done more than you did! (Dumas 384)” Albert has finally understood why the Count has planned to punish Fernand Mondego and forgives him for his actions. Albert didn’t need to be punished any further by the Count, as he decided to change himself by leaving his father and starting a humble new life by donating his savings to hospitals and joining the army. Albert’s transformed state of mind is enough to fulfill Dantes vengeance on him. Villefort decided to flee France and his crime with his wife Heloise de Villefort and his son Edouard, but when he came home, he saw them dead in his wife’s bedroom. Edmond Dantes was guided into the bedroom by Villefort to see the two bodies and asked if his vengeance was complete. Dumas writes,”Monte Cristo paled at the horrible sight. He realized that he had gone beyond the limits of rightful vengeance and that he could no longer say, “God is for me and with me.”(Dumas ###)” Dantes felt as if he took his godly powers too far when he found out Villefort’s once hopeful life crumbled before him to the point of losing his sanity. Villefort’s life was also not taken, but his downfall was enough for the Count to spare him. Danglars was captured by Luigi Vampa’s bandits and deprived of most of his money from buying the bandit’s food during his time in prison.
The Count visited Danglars once he had almost no money left and set him free, letting him keep the fifty thousand francs that he had left, and abandoned him at the side of a road. Monte Cristo says, “Your life will be spared. Your two accomplices weren’t so lucky: one of them is insane and the other is dead! Keep the fifty thousand francs you have left; I make you a gift of it. As for the five million you stole from the hospitals, I’ve already given back the money anonymously. (Dumas###)” Danglars valued his money more than anything else his life, so taking it away from him was enough for the Count instead of ending his life. Although Danglars was one of the three main accomplices to destroy Dante’s bright future, getting rid of Danglars own promising future of settling down in Vienna with millions of francs is
justifiable. Vengeance does not always have to result in death, but to push back with an equal amount of force. Albert learning from his mistakes, Villefort losing his wife, son, and sanity, and Danglars losing the majority of his valuable money completes Edmond Dantes’s revenge.
“Humble yourself or life will do it for you.” Having too much pride can cause karma to hit you very hard in life. The Count of Monte Cristo and Ozymandias are very common because they have very similar themes of being humble instead of having too much ego. In The Count of Monte Cristo Edmond Dantes, the main character, is in love with a beautiful young lady, Mercedes. His life is going very good to begin with anyway. He was promoted to captain of the Pharaon and was now making much more money than he used to be making. Although Edmond was a very happy and sympathetic person, some people were very envious of him. So Ferdinand, Danglars, and Caderousse, which were envious for very diverse reasons, decided to write a letter to the public prosecutor stating edmond’s visit to The Isle of Elba actually did indeed happen. The public prosecutor, Villefort, sees that the letter was intended to be
In the novella of The Crucible by Arthur Miller vengeance is walking Salem in causing several conflicts throughout the Salem village. Many of the conflicts are due with getting back at one another with the need for revenge. “We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law!” (Miller 81). This quote is trying to prove the point the proctor has a very good understanding of what is happening in how the little girls are rebelling and acting out. They are accusing several women of being witches. “Why, Abigail Williams charge her” (Miller 77). The quote is trying to show how many of the girls are calling out the wives in the Salem village.
Greed also influenced many of the decisions that characters have formulated throughout the book. For example, Jerry Cruncher chose to become a grave digger for the profit gotten from it, which caused many problems in his family. When Jerry Jr. follows his father into the night he witnesses his father committing a horrifying crime that he, “Knew very well knew what it would be; but, when he saw it, and saw his honoured parent about to wrench it open, he was so frightened, being new to the sight, that he made off again, and never stopped until he had run a mile or more” (Dickens 184). Had Jerry not been so acquisitive, he would most likely have chosen not to go into that profession. This would prevent Jerry Jr. from being scarred by his father's bad decisions and possibly decrease Jerry’s drinking due to guilt he has after grave digging. Additionally, when C.J. Stryver proposes to Lucie, his motive for it blossoms from greed. While explaining to Carton why he has decided to do this, Stryver admits, "I don't care about fortune: she is a charming creature, and I have made up my mind to please myself: on the whole, I think I can afford to please myself. She will have in me a man already pretty well off, and a
Our perspective on life can have a significant impact on our life. Depending on how you were raised it can impact your perspective on life very differently than others. For example if you were raised in a home of poverty or drug abuse you are use too that lifestyle when you're young. It wouldn't be till your older you would realize it is not a normal way of life. It shapes our life. In the novel the Glass Castle Jeanette is a perfect example of how your perspective changes throughout life as you experience life in addition to maturing. Her change in life had an unbelievable impact on her life that made her a well round mature adult despite her upbringing in poverty.
Written by Arthur Miller, the Crucible is a reading filled with many significant and important quotes. One excerpt expresses the hidden dishonesty and deceit within the Puritan society. It says, “There are wheels within wheels in this village, and fires within fires” (Miller 28). At this part in the play, Mrs. Ann Putnam is having a dispute with Rebecca Nurse over the reasoning for her many miscarriages. Unlike Mrs. Putnam, Rebecca has been granted with plenty of children making her quite envious over Rebecca. She tries to suggest that maybe the Devil helped her have so many kids. This quote is therefore used by Mrs. Putnam to express her religious knowledge in order to help explain about this mysterious and puzzling event that has been
There are many ways to express an opinion: paintings, poems, sculptures, speeches, etc. Alexandre Dumas chose to express his opinions over vengeance through his book, The Count of Monte Cristo. Dumas clearly believes that vengeance is not the answer for those who have wrong you in times past. This is shown is his book when the Count of Monte Cristo’s plot for revenge on those who sent him to jail for 14 years goes to far and kills an innocent person. Although at the beginning of the book, when the Count explains to young Albert and his friend, Franz, that he would fight a duel for something simple, but for someone that caused him horrible suffering, he would inflict suffering just as horrible. He justifies his statement with, “‘An eye
Though he may seem acquitted and amiable, Gerard de Villefort can be dangerous and even murderous. Gerard has done numerous things in his life to corroborate his sinfulness, including the assayed murder of his son, Andrea, by burying him alive when he was a newborn. Gerard is also one of the three main conspirators in the Count's arrest and imprisonment; it is he who is the most measurable of the three. The Count, Edmond Dantes, was an innocent man about to be married, before Gerard’s conception between right and wrong was twisted by the name of his father in a letter. Also, Gerard forces his wife to commit suicide; even though he had had many faults of his own.

Readers might say that, because of his condition, Christopher is incapable of experiencing love; however, people would describe love in an item that brings families together and bring happiness towards those who do. They would have a strong feeling or affection towards someone or something. Love can also be when you ahem sympathy for each other or when you feel considerate for the specific person.
The naivete of a child is often the most easily subjected to influence, and Pearl of the Scarlet Letter is no exception. Throughout the writing by Nathaniel Hawthorne, she observes as Dimmesdale and the rest of the Puritan society interact with the scarlet letter that Hester, her mother, wears. Hawthorne tries to use Pearl’s youth to teach the reader that sometimes it’s the most harmless characters that are the most impactful overall. In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, Pearl has learned the greatest lesson from the scarlet letter through her innocence as a youth and her realization of the identity of both herself and her mother.
“In moments of pain, we seek revenge”. This quote is something that does happen in certain events that humans go thru and it can influence a person to do things that they would never even think of doing. In certain cases regular people would actually kill someone because revenge seems to take over their mind. In the book A Necessary Evil, revenge is seen as a driving force in all the characters. Like the quote says, humans always feel the need for revenge when they are feeling pain. It is first seen in Michael Grey, when his wife is murdered and the man who killed her isn’t convicted, he feels an enormous sense for revenge. After hiring a hitman by the name Butch, Michael Grey regrets making his decision and decides to not pay butch the final
