Miller Edinboro University COUN. 757 Assignment One Regarding the assigned topic in the COUN. 757-course assignment one, a significant adult in my personal life that played a significant role in my development during the school-age developmental stage of my life were my parents, Eve and James Miller. There is little difference in these two individuals when compared to how they are now, however, the lifestyle these individuals have now is significantly different than the lifestyle they had. My relationship with Eve was a nurturing relationship. She organized and aided in her children’s daily life activities in and outside of the home environment. Eve is the spouse of James, who, at the time, served in the military and went to work every day at 6 am. and arrived home at 5 pm. My relationship with James was more distant, however, this was not intentional. He was essentially the person who handled the financial stability for the family. There are several characteristics these individuals displayed that I have learned to adapt as my own in my life today, such as work ethic, hospitality, and respect. when faced with a job, I should do the job, do the job correctly, and do the job on time. When an individual can do all three of these, then there will be no problems or issues in the work environment. If these three things are not performed accordingly, then the employer will/should look for someone to do the job for the employee (replace the employee). A second work ethic I have learned to adapt from my parents regards attendance. When an individual has an appointment scheduled, they should always arrive early to the appointment. In other words, if an individual is on time, they are late. Southern hospitality is a characteristic I had adapted from Eve. This form of hospitality was described to me as for how, as a host, to act, organize, and treat guests, when they arrive at the household. I have learned to make sure the entire household is cleaned, snacks and drinks are available and offered to the guest at arrival, and they are greeted with a welcoming smile. Respect is a characteristic I had adapted from both Eve and James. Through these individuals, I have learned to respect individuals’ opinions, views, beliefs, actions, and so forth, even if I disagree with them. Regarding my concerns of working with young children in a counseling setting, the need to consider the parents’ values, beliefs, standards, and so forth, seems to me, as a hindrance and possibly damaging factor for full wellbeing for the young child(s).
Although it is the responsibility of the counselor to format therapy in a way best suiting the child(s) and parents’ wants and needs, I believe it would be difficult to work with both when considering their preferences, in situations that may seem opposites to each other. I hope to overcome this concern of mine, through this class, by learning new techniques and ways to format treatment to suit both child(s) and
parents. There are several fears a child may have when working with a counseling student and/or counselor, such as the fear of disclosing information, not commonly talked about, to a new individual they had just met. Regarding a factor a child would fear when working with me personally, I would say it would be my focus on the child(s) wellbeing. When given the notice of abuse happening to the child or the insufficient care they receive in certain environments, such as schools, I would consider it a priority to see the child(s) is taken care of as soon as possible. I would address these concerns a child may have by reassuring them, nothing they choose to disclose will hurt them in the future. I want therapy with a child to be completely safe during, after, and in between sessions.

But this form can be divided in three sections as well: 1-Demography (from locators 1 through 13), 2- Procedural and diagnostic information (from locators 14 through 24) and 3- The technical part (from locators 25 through 33).
Counselors are very dependent on the research of others. Counselors are among many who are responsible for producing evidence based practice. Counselors have a responsibility to be eager and capable of locating and using evidence based interventions. Research reports are used to help summarize the findings of different types of research in the counseling profession. The results of a research report should summarize the findings of the research. According to Sheperis, Young, and Daniels 2010, “it should be easy for the reader to connect the findings with the stated research questions and to determine whether the finding support or refute your hypothesis” (p.239). The following are two challenges that the counseling profession is faced with when it comes to outcome research: (1) producing sufficient volumes of evidence and (2) being able to find, interpret, and use the evidence from previous research. These challenges place a limit on the variety of interventions that are available to the counseling profession. One intervention that works for one child, might not produce the same results for another child. So it is very important that research provides information that is useful and effective. The lack of studies makes it more challenging to determine whether or not an intervention is an effective solution that will improve a student’s behavior or academics. “Ultimately, regardless of how effective a counselor may be, if the problems are not properly measured and assessed, intervention is disadvantaged and treatment is comprised” (Sheperis, Young, & Daniels, 2010, p. 3). In order to best serve clients we have to complete comprehensive research and use the results to the advantage of the client.
Although, this session ended with amazing results, I feel as though I need more practice with this type of therapy. I have to continue to practice on allowing the patient to come up with their own solutions. I found it hard not giving advice to my client, because I already knew the situation. However, in the end I found myself very proud, because even though this was not a real therapy session, but the client was able to find a real solution to her problem. This experience is one that teaches the therapist restraint, it allows one to step back and listen. It also gives the client the opportunity to reach a solution themselves without someone giving them the answer to their

As I continue my journey as an emerging counselor, I have realized how crucial the relationship between client and counselor is. However, after reading the two assigned sections from Carl Rogers book, I felt inspired and incompetent because there is so much to learn to truly strive to become a better helper. I have learned that there are many features of a good relationship. However, first one needs to move away from a dualistic way of thinking. A dualistic thinking is not an effective way to approach therapy as a counselor. I recall coming into this helping profession with a problem-solving mentality but I quickly realized that that type of mentality would not be effective or helpful. Hence, Rogers reassured that assumption in his book. In contrast, one needs to realize that it is not about solving the client’s problems but rather the depth of understanding and openness between the counselor and client.
Anin Utigaard and Dr. Janet Edgette use two theories, person-centered child therapy and adolescent family therapy with children in two video sessions respectively. The therapies are highly impactful yet differ in important respects. Person-centered approaches seek to honor the client by supporting them in their self-exploration. Adolescent family therapy strives to strengthen the family system through encouragement of member’s feelings and contributions. These therapies and tools are viable strategies for use by professional school counselors.
