On April 4, 2008 Goldman, Sachs & Co. submitted a prepared prospectus for Dollar General Corporation. According to the prospectus, Dollar General is the largest discount retailer in the United States by number of stores. They serve a broad customer base and majority of products are priced at $10 or less and approximately 30% of products are price at $1 or less. Costco is one of the good companies in the USA. The company has quality products that function in four different department's food, health care, employee discount cost, and some types of delivery services. The company actually sells fewer kinds of products than Wal-Mart, Giant and others, however, this means that they can keep their costs down this way. They are also able to keep costs down by charging customers a yearly fee, which allows Costco to have more brand loyalty because of this. So, Costco is a good option because it has provided better services for many years.
Some of the factors that should be considered when forecasting is number of new stores, sales per store, membership growth, operation margin, and international expenses. There are many assumptions made to create forecast income statement, forecast common-size income statement, and forecast abbreviated balance sheet. In addition, the five factors that the protagonist choose to determine the future performance of Costco seems quite appropriate except few. The number of warehouse is too assertive and the membership base is having constant renewal rate which should be considered more carefully with factors like scale economics and new competitions. Senior Management of PepsiCo is evaluating the potential acquisition of two companies – Carts of Colorado and California Pizza Kitchen – in order to expand the company’s restaurant business. If indeed PepsiCo decides to pursue the acquisition of one or both, they must decide how to align each of these business units in its historically decentralized management approach and how to forge relationships between the acquired business units and existing business units. In their evaluation, Senior Management is faced with the question of whether the necessary capital investment in order to purchase one or both of the businesses can be profitable for each of the acquired business units, but must also take into consideration that the additional business units will not hinder the profitability of the existing business units.
At the end of 2012, Costco was a successful business; however there are some issues that they would need to deal with. These issues mainly arise from their previous successful ventures as a warehouse wholesale company. The first issue is that Costco has competitors that can actually be and are a threat to their success. Competition allows a company to improve itself and prove its prowess to its customers. However, when a competitor is able to provide the service at a much reduced cost, problems will arise. As for the second issue, it seems that Costco’s efforts to become an international company are moving slowly. They have not reached a point where their US and Canadian warehouses provide a backbone for their finances. Costco’s third issue is their expenses which include merchandising costs and preopening expenses have been increasing steadily and they need to balance this out to keep a positive net income.

Whenever a huge corporation such as Walmart moves into an area with local stores and merchants, all of them are bound to go out of business because all the customers will be attracted to the huge selections and discount. There has been huge protest by these merchants and locals whenever a Walmart is being decided to be implanted there. This hurts their business which can make families go bankrupt and although it can create job opportunities within the Walmart but as you know Walmart has really bad working conditions such as no wages and unfair treatment. Walmart is also to be said to be the most poorly run and understaffed retail store. In previous studies Walmart was shown to be listed as the lowest in customer satisfaction. The goal was to have around 20 stores after two years of entering a market and have those stores expand even further into smaller cities and suburban locations. They also started to add drive-through because it made it more convenient for parents with small children. Some of the drawbacks of drive-through were that it took away from impulse buys and sometimes created bottlenecks in the line. Licensing the brand was also a great way that they expanded their business; by putting Starbucks in airports in malls they create a lot of foot traffic lead to successful stores. Starbucks carefully considered their image and the image they wanted to uphold when choosing licensees. The international market is now where Starbucks has the most potential to grow. As of right now Starbucks has plans to open 1,400 new stores in China. That’s more than half of the store it already has in China. The growth technique that I was most impressed with was that having two locations so close to each other would not saturate the market. The first store would see a drop in sales at first but would bounce back and the new store would grow. I notice we have that here, at Target in uptown you can actually see the Starbucks across the street while you are in line. Both seem pretty busy most of the time too.
Starbucks recognizes its employees for much of its success. This is due mostly to maintenance of a great and proven work environment for all employees. The company does not have a formal organizational chart; sot employees are permitted by management to make decisions without a management referral. Moreover, management trust and stands behind the decision of the employees and it is this that allows for employees to thinks for themselves as a part of the business, so as to make them feel as a true asset and not as just another employee.
The kind of questions I would ask myself are would gentrification benefit not only the people but the smaller stores who created the community? Or would it let the small businesses struggle to stand?

It was the motto of Starbucks’ owner Howard Schultz and, mostly thanks to his philosophy, the company has become the biggest coffee drink retailer in the world. However, within the new customer satisfaction report, there are shown some concerns, that the company has lost the connection with customers and it must be taken some steps to help Starbucks to go back on the right path regarding customer satisfaction. I will briefly summarize and examine issues facing Starbucks. Starting from there, I will pick the most important issue and study it from different positions.
