This report will be able to inform everyone of how much of a burden the cost of textbooks is to college students. The overall purpose is to implement ways that will lower the cost of textbooks. Textbooks need to be more affordable for students so that they can excel in all their classes. Lowering the cost of the textbooks will benefit both the students and the colleges.
PIRG surveyed more than 2,000 students at 150 universities and found that roughly 65 percent had decided against buying a textbook at some point because it was too expensive (Colarusso). Due to them not buying their textbooks they mostly couldn’t get the information they needed for test and homework. Students will turn to not taking classes and colleges won't make as much money

The ideas that would be suggested are creating book swaps, a buy and sell textbook page, and giving away textbooks. We would be able to see how many student and faculty members would want information about cheaper textbooks. If their support is given, then I will go talk to the president of academic affairs.
Creating a flyer: On the posters, there can be other information such as renting textbooks, buying them used, or downloading them. These flyers will be posted all over campus and handed out to individuals. Putting information such as finding books, on websites such as Amazon, Chegg, or Kindle for a cheaper price.
Book Swap: If students do not want their books after the semester is over they can give them to an organization. The organization can create a book swap on campus during the week. Students can stop by to drop books off or pick up a book that they may need. Students can either sell their books or just give them away for free. Swapping books is a great way to help out others who can't afford to buy

In the email, students will be informed that they can sell their textbooks to other students on campus at a reasonable cost. Students will be able to put money back in their pockets. Another way students can be informed is through the school's social media websites. Facebook is a free social network that students can sign up for and use for the Nicholls buy and sell textbooks page. Since many people are unaware that it even exist it would be a great way to tell them about it.
Cost
The cost to inform students of how to get textbooks that cost less will be extremely cheap. At most the school would spend 150 dollars on putting up posters around the school. Organizations can rent out an area on campus for free. The only people who will be receiving money is those who are willing to sell their textbooks to others.
Conclusion
The cost of textbooks is consistently rising every year. Causing students to stress each year as to how they will pay for books needed for their classes and how many classes they will be able to take. Textbook cost plays a major role in the grades students make and due to having the book or not. Resources needed to help students save money and allow them to better their education need to be looked at. By informing the student that attend Nicholls State University of the many ways to save money on textbooks will take a lot of stress off the
This article, “Why Are Textbooks So Expensive?” by Henry Roediger reveals the truth of why textbooks are so pricey. He shows how textbooks prices are costly not because of inflation, corporate textbook companies, and frequent revisions, but because of the sale of used textbooks. The article is elaborating on why used textbooks are the real culprit as well. One main point that is highlighted is that used textbooks are resold for many years. The initial selling of the textbook is the only time the author will make a profit, but the bookstore will make a profit every time they resell a used book. It is essential for the author to raise the price to compensate for the loss of money when dealing with used textbooks.
In a recent study that was conducted the rate of individuals attending college has increased. This increase in students comes at a time when the country has been described as being in a recession. With job losses, companies closing and lack of job availability many people are returning to school. This return to the classroom comes at a cost. The rate of college tuition has risen in the last few years. In my home state of Kentucky, it appears both of the major Universities have asked to raise tuition every other year. When college cost rise so does the tools needed to attend college. One of the most expensive tools is books. Last year I enrolled my son in college when calculating the books for his classes, we soon learned that the cost of his books and the cost of my books were almost on month’s salary. My family soon learned if we were going to be able to not only attend college but have the necessary tools needed, we would have to consider alternatives to buying books. I did some research and soon discovered that technology had again come to the rescue. I found a company called Chegg that is an online book rental company. This company provides students with an alternative to buying books by renting them for a portion of the price. According to their article in CrunchBase named “Chegg edit” the company began at Iowa University in 2005 as a “hyper-local” classified directory. It was not until 2007 that the company introduced their textbook rental service. When looking at the company from an Information Systems standpoint I would say it ranks up there with the creative ideas of the century. You go online type in your order and it is processed within a matter of days. During the next portion of this paper we will loo...
Ask any college student to state one of their largest expenses and it would be safe to bet the response would be “Textbook prices!” The cost of purchasing required materials for courses has reached numbers high enough to cause many students to take out second loans. Information released this year by the American Enterprise Institute shows that “College textbook prices have increased faster than tuition, health care costs and housing prices, all of which have risen faster than inflation” (Kingkade, 2013). This information equates to an 812% increase in the cost of college textbooks over what they were just over thirty years ago (Kingkade, 2013). The figure here shows an unusually large increase that has far outpaced that of average inflation. Combine this information with the equally troubling information released by Bloomberg stating “college tuition and fees have increased 1,120 percent since records began in 1978” and a serious financial problem for students emerges(Huffington Post, 2012). One thing should be clear given these statistics: something must be done to help lessen the financial burden being placed on today’s students. Considering the implications of these two figures, the University of Delaware should attempt to remedy the increasing cost of textbooks as soon as possible before they overwhelm students any more than they already have. In order to help reduce these runaway costs, this institution should pursue a policy similar to those high schools and elementary schools practice, namely a sort of loan program.
There is no escaping the fact that the cost of college tuition continues to rise in the United States each year. To make it worse, having a college degree is no longer an option, but a requirement in today’s society. According to data gathered by the College Board, total costs at public four-year institutions rose more rapidly between 2003-04 and 2013-14 than they did during either of the two preceding decades (Collegeboard.com). Students are pressured to continue into higher education but yet, the increasing costs of books and tuition make us think about twice. Sometimes, some of these students have to leave with their education partially finished, leaving them with crushing debts. It is important to find the means to prevent these students that are victimized by skyrocketing tuitions from dropping out, and encourage all incoming high school seniors to continue their education.
Just one book alone can cost around a hundred dollars and if you have to buy five books, that is five hundred dollars just for books. For biology majors, a biology book can sometimes cost two to three hundred dollars. Also colleges charge fees for their students, some examples of the fees Lourdes University charges are, Technology fee of seventy five dollars, a health services fee of seventy five dollars and biology majors a fee of seventy dollars for lab, all per semester. The author of “College May Cost More Than You Think” writes, “Once your students has been accepted and is about to head off to school, you’ll receive your first tuition bill. The bottom line on the statement may have shocked you, but at least you thought, you knew what was ahead. However, don’t put your checkbook away just yet” (1). This quotes tells the truth that you think your tuition bill is going to be this much, but a curveball is thrown and your tuition bill is really this much.
Several students are disheartened when it comes to college due to increasing prices of tuition yearly. Most will agree that we need a further cultivated society, but to accomplish this, we must take in consideration lowering the expenses of college tuition. It is recognized that decreasing college tuition does have various drawbacks. For example, it may cut into funds for items such as classroom equipment, essentials, staff pay, administration, and dormitories (Goodman). Nevertheless, lowering college tuition will encourage more students to attend college, relieve students of the stressful burdens of loans, while also creating a better educated society, which will be beneficial to everyone in the long run.
... student fees going to help with textbook purchase they go towards the purchase of a digital notebook or computer or similar device. Whether these are a Mac platform or a Microsoft platform we will need to be ready to make these changes.
Besides Howard Nemerov serving in the military he had 3 ways that shaped his poetry in three ways. After he served in the war his poems were more religion based. Later after the war when he settled down his poems were more nature orientated. But throughout his whole poetry it is laced with funny poems with a serious note. While Howard Nemerov’s style of poetry changed with age some of the main themes of his poetry were nature, humor but with a more serious note and religion.
All institutions whether attending a university, community, or even a technical college, requires the student to purchase a textbook in order to be successful in the class. Some textbooks aren’t even open all semester and the information and statistics can be out of date and can greatly affect your overall knowledge on certain topics. In addition, cost free text books can enhance the quality of education by the teachers and serve more accessibility to working students. Although councils and administrations can’t approve cost free text books, policies such as, Open Textbook, bookstore rentals, and affordable textbook act should be offered nationwide. As an experienced freshmen surviving the first year of college, textbooks should be purchased free of cost provided by institutions throughout the country.
”Books will soon be obsolete in the schools...Scholars will soon be instructed through the eye. It is possible to touch every branch of human knowledge with the motion picture” (Thomas Edison). An idea that was destined for failure has now been made into the key source to get students and teachers more interacted while in a classroom setting. Tablets such as the iPad and the Microsoft surface have made this idea possible, showing students that there is another alternative to the traditional method which would be a printed version of the textbook. Tablets are portable computers that use a touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be used with a pen, today however tablets can be used with just one finger or multiple fingers with the support of multi touch input. Tablet have had a positive input on society especially students in school that are looking to get their work done in an engaging way and, not by moving a pen or pencil like it’s been done for decades. Tablets have proven to be the better tool for learning among students.
Along with these problems, some professors demand a specific edition of textbooks, which would cost hundreds of dollars more than the older version, and the only difference students can find is the physical appearance of the books. The California Student Public Interest Research Group published a study in 2004 that found new editions cost 58 percent more than older editions and newer editions are not that different from previous editions (PresslerE01). Therefore, expenses on text books must be reduced as it has a direct effect on students’ performance. In addition, it can be accessible anywhere at any time, so, students shouldn’t carry heavy textbooks all the time.
With technology progressing from drones fulfilling shipments to electronic books becoming cheaper, major companies such as Apple and Amazon have had a big impact on not only the tech industry but the publishing industry as well. Companies are outputting resources like IBook’s and the Kindle bookstore to take full advantage of the transition to digital publishing. As a result of this we have greener, more budget friendly books, and outdated traditional copies of text. With the introduction to these resources it is making the lives of students and the mass market more convenient. Students are now able to purchase books on one device that won’t weigh their bags down on a daily basis. Companies have created bookstores that can be accessed from devices that we use every day, resulting in paperless copies of books that are substantially cheaper than the traditional hard copy. E-books are replacing physical books and textbooks rapidly, and as a result they are becoming more widely and readily available for students.
Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
Getting educated is one of the most important things in life when it comes to getting a good future. By developing good knowledge of schooling, it helps establish and maintain new information as needed throughout the real world. As books are one the essential tools in learning, eBooks are being used in a everyday lifestyle. Traveling to get away places from city life, helps give reading a comforting feel. Students that use print books are eventually going to use ebooks in the future. By educating students with ebooks, it is more efficient than carrying textbooks; ebooks is more convenient and reliable to read, write and store notes. Print books are being replaced by eBooks, it helps on keeping files together and it makes notes
Students can also save up to 80% in college costs. Costs are becoming outlandishly expensive now -a- days. So many people who deserve a college education cannot afford one. This way, a college education will be available to almost everyone. Students can also learn from "the best instructors, not teaching assistants, not name only professors who teach, not wanna be's." (Leonard, 1997) Students can also learn...
