In a third experiment ninety-seven undergraduate participants volunteered and of them fifty-nine were women and thirty-eight were men. Fifty-three of them were in the stress group and forty-four were in the control group. Participants with surgery and medical conditions where stress inductions would be inadvisable were excluded from participation. During session one, participants sat in a small testing room that contained a chair and a desk with a computer. The computer presented the words in each list for one second each, and the order of lists and words within lists was randomised. There was a forty-five- second break between lists. To reduce variability due to diurnal changes in cortisol, all participants were tested between the hours of 12 and 5 p.m. Participants were contacted via e-mail the day before the experiment and asked to refrain from drinking alcohol for 12 hours prior to the experiment and from eating a large meal or consuming products with high dairy, acidity, or caffeine 60 minutes prior to the experiment, as these factors have been shown to influence cortisol samples (King, Munisamy, de Wit, & Lin, 2006; Lemmens, Born, Martens, Martens, & Westerterp-Plantenga, 2011; Lovallo et al., 2005; Nicolson, 2007; Witbracht, Van Loan, Adams, Keim, & Laugero, 2013). After signing the consent form, participants washed their hands and rinsed out their mouths with water. Participants then placed a synthetic salivette swab under their tongue for two minutes to saturate the swab with saliva. They then placed the swab in the salivette tube, which was stored at 208C until it was assayed. As menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive use has been shown to affect cortisol reactivity to stress (see Kudielka & Kirschbaum, 2005, for a review), women were asked additional questions (such as the date of their last menstruation, typical menstrual cycle length, and oral contraceptive use) to determine menstrual cycle stage. Cortisol is a type of steroid hormone known as a glucocorticoid (helps body deal with stress), and is produced in the outer section of the adrenal glands known as the adrenal cortex. It is essential for sustaining life and it has many functions. Cortisol may directly initiate some of these functions or it may be permissive in that it allows certain processes to take place by increasing enzyme activity, promoting enzymes, or by regulating the actions of other hormones. This powerful hormone affects nearly all body systems with binding sites on practically all body cells. Secretion of this hormone is cyclic with higher levels of secretion in the morning and lower levels at night. Because higher levels of cortisol are secreted in times of stress, it is called the “stress hormone. In the fight or flight stress response, cortisol is considered the most important hormone because it affects many of the changes that take place in the body that are essential for coping with stress. In fact, all the functions of cortisol are too numerous to mention for the purpose of this discussion, but I will try to describe some of major functions of this amazing hormone.
Stressors initiate a response within the organism and causes changes in the body, specifically responses in the body’s autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system has two branches: the sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic autonomic nervous system helps the body deal with the stress it encounters, initiating the ‘fight or flight’ response. Once the threat has passed, the parasympathetic autonomic nervous system will take over, relaxing the body. There is a balance between these two in a healthy person. Stress is something that everyone has to deal with in life, whether it is good or bad stress. Stress management techniques are a great way to deal with stress. Some of the stress management techniques that I learned from this course are prioritization, scheduling, and execution. Using these techniques has effectively helped me deal with my own stress. When it comes to dealing with stress I still have many strengths and weaknesses that I will explain. Some stressors I have in my life that I will discuss are psychointrapersonal, social, life events, and daily hassles. Next, I will give my opinion on my post-course survey, and compare and contrast it to my pre-course survey scores. Finally, I will explain my last goals for this stress management course.
As much as I would have liked to continue my engaging research on Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's (issues I hold very dear to my heart), during my preliminary research for the third paper I felt drawn to another, equally interesting, topic. As finals rapidly approach and the idea of graduation becomes more real by day, this new topic seemed to have more personal significance to my life. And so I began research on this topic with purely selfish motivations- to better understand the phenomenon of stress.

The causes and effects of stress are numerous and one’s ability to manage stress is vital in maintaining healthy living.
