In this life it is essential to base your work around your beliefs and to feel passionate about what you do. Then spreading your passion for your work onto others is how you grow as an individual and as a company. Which is what I felt after reading the #1 core value.
The Wawa story began in a small rural town of Pennsylvania called Wawa. There the owner George Wood started a small dairy farming and processing plant in 1902, after relocating the family iron foundry business from New Jersey. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George Wood grandson opened the first Wawa Food market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. The Johnson & Johnson Corporation have withstood various problems that would have crippled other firms which can only be accounted with the cohesiveness of the corporation members and the internal structure of the corporation. Core Values play an important part of guiding individuals and business. Lacking core values as an individual or cooperation can guide either down the proverbial river without a paddle. The next core value I uphold is being honest in the workplace. I speak in a direct matter and I am quick to the point. I do not like to receive fluff from other people. If the doctor doesn’t know what is going, I let them know it is ok to tell me you have no idea. Honesty is very important as it helps me to tell the truth no matter what I am doing. It also helps me keep it as a core value in my everyday life.
Here at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) our goal is to provide excellent care to every patient and family member that enters our facility. Our nationally ranked team of healthcare workers strive daily to improve quality of life to each client we serve. Although there are a number of healthcare workers here at UAB, the nurses here work day and night to ensure that every patient’s needs are met. Furthermore, many of UAB’s nursing staff go out of their way every day in order to satisfy the needs of their clients. My core educational values define what I believe is necessary tools students need to be successful. Such values are provided by the community of people (educators, parents, business partners) who touch the students’ lives. I value knowledge because without awareness of specific content, students are not able to truly feel a part of society. I value development of skills in order for students to apply their knowledge. When skills are applied, students demonstrate their knowledge and ability to function in our current world. I value critical thinking in our students so they can extend their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems benefitting our present and future. I value citizenship and feel that education has a responsibility to model and nurture character qualities in our students. Educating students is raising them equipped with tools that will enable them to function as contributing participants in a productive society. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are educational values at the core of developing a student ready for the world’s challenges.
