Everyone experiences events that are unpleasant, stressful and hopeful. The way people deal with the situations and their actions are apart of coping. This chapter focused on coping skills and an in depth perspective of the different strategies of coping. The topics on self defeating behaviors, coping strategies and stress management were intriguing. One topic that was interesting was self-defeating behavior. Self defeating behavior is stating something you want, but the actions that precede are making it impossible to happen. There are several different types of self defeating behaviors. Coping is the way people manage stress or harmful situations. Coping is a process, requires planning and may not always lead to a positive outcome. There are two forms of coping problem focused coping and emotion focused coping. Problem focused involves facing the problem and trying to change it. Emotional focused coping involves managing distress emotions. Both forms should be used to resolve a conflict. I usually use problem focused coping when I know I have control over the situation. I use emotion focused coping during situations that I can 't control or situations that are unpredictable. There are three coping strategies which include active-cognitive strategies, active-behavioral strategies, and avoidance strategies. Active cognitive strategies use logic to explain what has happened and what needs to be improved. Active-behavioral means taking action to change the the situation. Avoidance strategies involve the individual ignoring the situation in order to cope with life. Most of the time I use active-cognitive strategies but when the situations inflicts an extreme emotional response I use avoidance strategies. The three parts of stress are utilizing anxiety, identifying internal strategies that produce either unpleasant or pleasant response and developing strengths and resources. Anxiety can be a motivator when you reach the highest peak but it also inhibit success by creating too much anxiety. The body sends warning signals in the form of physical responses, a person 's conscious telling them to change and mental glimpses of what might be happening. Internal strategies are the feeling and the way a person perceives the situations. Everyone finds different things stressful and the way we feel can contribute to our behaviors. People also associate and disassociate a situation. Disassociate is replaying the events in one 's head and thinking that the worse will happen. Associative people step into the situation to improve the situation. Resourceful strengths are paying attention to early warning signs that signal a person is at their highest point of stress and being associated with the end results. It was interesting seeing stress in a more logical and complex way. Most people I have talked to give advice on ways to avoid stress, so it was a different reading about how anxiety can help a situation. I focused on discussing self defeating behaviors, coping strategies and stress management. Self defeating behaviors include high anxiety avoidance and fear of change as different styles. Everyone everywhere has experienced stress with something they have dealt with in life. Whether it is school, paying bills, managing a busy schedule or work, stress affects everyone. Although everyone experiences stress, many people don’t actually know what stress is. Stress is the physical response of the body to harmful situations that threaten someone’s well being. When someone says “stress”, the word is automatically associated with a negative effect on people but small doses of stress can benefit a person, if used to correctly. Everyone’s stress level is different and the amount of stress that can be handled varies from person to person but a stress overload will not benefit anyone. “When you feel threatened, a chemical reaction occurs in your body to allow you to act in a way to prevent injury” (“Stress Management Health Center”). The chemical that is released when stressed is known as cortisol, also known a stress hormone. “Cortisol is like a long-term form of adrenaline, produced in the adrenal gland when the body is under pressure” (“The Effects of Stress on Your Reproductive Health and Fertility”). Adrenaline is also released to send the body into, what is known as, emergency action (“Stress Symptoms, Signs and Causes”). This emergency action speeds up reactions preformed by the body and the mind. This is a way of protecting the body. While in emergency action, this stress caused by threatening situations can save your life. In emergency situations, you are given “extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on your brakes to avoid a car accident” (“Stress Management Health Center”). Everyone has to deal with struggles during their everyday life. Some people’s problems are more serious than others, and the way that people deal with their problems varies. Everybody has a coping mechanism, something they can use to make the struggle that they’re going through easier, but they’re usually different. Some people drink, some people smoke, some people pretend there is no problem. There are healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms, and people will vary the one they use depending on the problem they’re facing. In The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the author and her family deal with their struggles in multiple different ways as time goes on. However, the severity of her situation means that the methods she uses to deal with it are very important. Coping with stress in inevitable but there are various strategies people can learn to cope with in our everyday life. Benjamin Lahey, a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at the University of Chicago, wrote an article “Coping with Stress” on how to handle them. Everybody is different in their own way so not everyone is going to deal with stress the same way. In the article, Professor Lahey mentions positive and negative, productive and non-productive methods people handle stress through effective coping, ineffective coping, and defense mechanisms.
The Coping domain examines the extent to which individuals cope during stressful situations. Ms. M’s results indicated that she has a high tolerance for stressful situations. However, she is experiencing more stress than she can adequately tolerate, which caused her to experience some distress. Specifically, her need stated are not being adequately met and she is preoccupied on her perceived negative features. Her negative self-inspecting behaviors, then, have caused her to feel discomfort that manifests as shame and/or guilt.

Everybody has at least one thing in common. Can you guess what it is? If you guessed, heartbreak, you’re right, but that’s not the answer I’m looking for. The correct answer is stress. Everyone has stress in his or her life at one point or another. It’s one of many inevitable parts of life. Whether it’s busting out a research paper for Psychology at the last minute, expecting your first child to be born, to making sure you’re up in time to catch the Saturday morning cartoons, it’s clearly evident that everyone goes through stress. The real question is, how is stress handled in our society? A person is defined by how they handle the stressors in their lives and how they overcome stressful moments. This paper will explore the aspects of stress management; hoping to help others in their times of stress.
When a person uses problem focused coping they directly attempt to deal with a difficult situation by trying to change it. Thus, the situation at hand has different options and can be altered if one is willing. One example in which I personally used problem focused coping is when I got in an argument with my sister recently. The fight was a very troubling situation for me, but it was alterable. I knew that I could do something to change the situation. After realizing how upset I was after the argument I decided to apologize to my sister. The action of apologizing ended the argument and thus all negative feelings as well.
With 7 billion people currently living on this Earth, it’s easy to feel alone, especially if one is considered an “other” by their community. Being one of the only African-Americans in a predominately white and Asian community, I’m acutely familiar with this feeling. I also had to cope with being from a lower-middle class family in an overwhelmingly affluent neighborhood. While I have the same culture as my classmates, I’m still outwardly different, which has contributed to an overall feeling of otherness and solitude. However, it is this adversity that has allowed me to triumph and embrace myself completely. I now hope to bring that same feeling of self-acceptance to others who are facing similar struggles.
This research is guided by two major theories. First, Transactional Theory, which is a widely accepted theory of coping developed by Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman. Second, the Control Theory developed by Charles Carver and Michael Scheier.
When you think of emotions you think of the classic, sadness, happiness, and madness. The one people often forget is the emotion of anxiety. Anxiety is one of the only emotions that you can have and actually not show it. Anxiety itself is very strange, depending on who you are, and how your brain works, anything can cause it . Anxiety usually follows you throughout your life but for some people, it changes as you change and grow. You aren 't the same height as you were when you were 6, you grew. There’ s a chance that the anxiety you encounter works the same way. Some classic emotions remain the same throughout your life for the most part, but anxiety as a tendency to morph.
Stress is something that everyone has to deal with in life, whether it is good or bad stress. Stress management techniques are a great way to deal with stress. Some of the stress management techniques that I learned from this course are prioritization, scheduling, and execution. Using these techniques has effectively helped me deal with my own stress. When it comes to dealing with stress I still have many strengths and weaknesses that I will explain. Some stressors I have in my life that I will discuss are psychointrapersonal, social, life events, and daily hassles. Next, I will give my opinion on my post-course survey, and compare and contrast it to my pre-course survey scores. Finally, I will explain my last goals for this stress management course.

Mental health affects a person’s emotions, feelings, thoughts, and sections when exposed to different situations. Furthermore, mental health is responsible for a person’s reaction to stress and other social conditions. Generally, mental health affects how a person relates to others and their ability to understand and interact with them.
