Oliver is someone who denied the truth to himself for months. He was gay and he had finally accepted it. He told his parents, hoping that they’d accept him but unfortunately it was the complete opposite. They thought there was something wrong with him and decided he needed to go to conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is something that thousands of people in the LGBT community go through every ear. Statistics show that about one in three LGBT people have been subjected to some form of conversion therapy (#BornPerfect: The Campaign to End Conversion Therapy, 2014). Conversion therapy is a psychological treatment whose purpose is to change a person’s sexual orientation to heterosexual. It needs to be banned because it doesn’t work, therapists
People that’ve gone through conversion therapy tell stories about things they went through. Something therapists do is force people to watch heterosexual porn. Therapists believe that watching porn will make men attracted to women while it will make women attracted to men (A Survivor Of Gay Conversion Therapy Shares His Chilling Story, 2016). Another method therapists use is force people to pray the gay away. One man named Paul Southwick wrote about how he tried to pray the gay away but all that did was make him hate himself be felt like wasn’t trying hard enough. Some therapist give their patients electric shocks while showing them homoerotic images. This leads to patients associating homosexuals with pain (A Survivor Of Gay Conversion Therapy Shares His Chilling Story, 2016). Conversion therapy can last for years. This mean that patients are subject to abuse for years. Conversion therapy is extremely harmful. People learn to associate homosexuality with pain and that leads to them hating homosexuals and themselves. It is also very traumatizing. People that have served conversion therapy say they still feel the harmful effects years
The start of this article focuses on a Christian client named George who is plagued with feelings of worthlessness, depression, low self-esteem, and suicide. His mother had also battled depression, and his father had an abusive relationship with alcohol, which caused his father to have verbally and physically abusive altercations with George and his mother. The abusive experiences that George was exposed to as a child paved the way for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as an adult (Garzon, 2005). With all of these factors present in this client’s life, a treatment plan was created that involved scripture interventions. The author made sure to touch on the fact that every client is unique in the hopes that counselors would be aware that one type of scripture intervention might work for one client and not work for another. The article highlights three guiding values when considering these types of interventions; “respect for the client’s autonomy/freedom, sensitivity to and empathy for the client’s religious and spiritual beliefs, and flexibility and responsiveness to the client’s religious and spiritual beliefs.”(Garzon, 2005). ...
Even though these practices have hurt, or even killed some of their “patients,” there are still some survivors, and journalists that have proven that conversion therapy does not work.
First of all, sexual orientation is what attracts or arouses one sexually and it consists of: heterosexuals, which are individuals attracted to the opposite sex, homosexuals, same sex, bisexual, attracted to both, and finally asexual, which is not attracted to any sex. The shame was present back in the early 20th century where homosexuality was a crime. It was considered a mental illness, as in something was wrong with the individual’s brain. To right this wrong, it was decided to use conversion therapy to actually convert those individuals from gay to straight. Somesh
Scientists in fields connected to neurobiology and psychiatry remain mystified about the cause of Conversion Disorder. The disorder is characterized by physical symptoms of a neurological disorder, yet no direct problem can be found in the nervous system or other related systems of the body. This fact alone is not unusual; many diseases and symptoms have unknown origins. Conversion Disorder, however, seems to stem from "trivial" to traumatic psychological events and emotions rather than biological events. The extreme symptoms often disappear as quickly as they appear without the patient consciously controlling or feigning them. Thus, Conversion Disorder serves as a significant example of how blurred the conceived demarcated divisions of mind/body/behavior can be.
Making a stands that being a homosexual is natural and homosexuality isn’t a mental disorder. Conversion or reparative therapy only suppress their sexual conduct, not their sexual desires. Those type of therapy infuses shame and guilt in a person which can cause the person the shutdown. Secondly, conversion therapy can make a person feel like they have no way out. The highly disapproved therapy can push a person to make a bad rational decision possibly committing suicide. LGBT people are three to seven times more likely to commit suicide. Thirdly, they promote sexual orientation is a choice but your sexual orientation is not a choice. Conversion and Reparative therapy are supported by James Dobson which created a Christian organization called “ Focus On The

Conversion Therapy, also known as Reparative Therapy, is defined as a multitude of dangerous practices that claim to change a person’s sexuality or gender (hrc.org). The goal of Conversion Therapy is to try and make the patients behave stereotypically more feminine or masculine, teach heterosexual dating skills, and redirect arousal all together (dailybeast.com). However, the consequences of Conversion Therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, suicide, or catching and transmitting Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) (hrc.org). Some of the techniques used are vomiting, inducing nausea, or paralysis while showing homoerotic images (huffingtonpost.com).

They aren’t deranged or detrimental to society. The arguments supporters give for conversion therapy is that it offers a choice, that homosexuality is a psychological disorder, and that it goes against Christianity. One of the counterclaims CT therapists and supporters give is that it “gives a choice” (Sanchez 6). The problem with this, though, is the continued belief that homosexuality is a choice. Homosexuality has continually been disproven of being a matter of choice (Markowitz 3). The only thing “changeable” about sexual orientation is one’s feelings about theirs or others. Feelings about something and the actual thing are two different things altogether (Haldeman 6). Furthermore, supporters believe homosexuality is a psychological disorder (Sanchez 2). This, however, has blatantly been proved false. Major mental health associations have reaffirmed that homosexuality is in fact not a mental illness (Markowitz 2). Conclusively, the last argument supporters have is that homosexuality goes against Christianity. Religion, especially Christianity, is a large component of the western civilization. In this religion, it is stated that homosexuality is “sin”. Because of this, many religious groups have taken part in the support of conversion therapy (Haldeman 3). However, this does not warrant the destruction of individuals based on something that doesn’t even
According to the Human Rights Campaign, Conversion therapy is a practice that claims to be able to "turn gay people straight" through therapy. Conversion therapy leads to a variety of negative side effects. According to the Human Rights Campaign, "minors are especially vulnerable, and conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide." Conversion therapy is a horrific practice that should be banned in all fifty states. Conversion therapy is a horrible practice that should be
“The unprecedented growth of the gay community in recent history has transformed our culture and consciousness, creating radically new possibilities for people to ‘come out’ and live more openly as homosexuals”(Herdt 2). Before the 1969 Stonewall riot in New York, homosexuality was a taboo subject. Research concerning homosexuality emphasized the etiology, treatment, and psychological adjustment of homosexuals. Times have changed since 1969. Homosexuals have gained great attention in arts, entertainment, media, and politics. Yesterday’s research on homosexuality has expanded to include trying to understand the different experiences and situations of homosexuals (Ben-Ari 89-90).
In the movie “Beginners”, Oliver were having difficulties in forming an intimated relationship with Anna, a girl who he met at a party and fell in love with. Oliver could not develop a sense of trust due to the lack of parental affection linked to his mother’s concern and sensitivity and thus contribute to his development of mistrust. When they spent more time together, Oliver still wasn't able to trust Anna and felt that she would have left him like his parents did. His mistrust built up and once broke the intimated relationship with Anna. Using the classifications in class, I will classify him in the intermediate which he is physically well but psychosocially unwell at that moment, and in the happy-well category when he chased Anna to New York and reestablish the relationship with
Have you ever thought about the damage conversion camps and therapy do to our LGBT+ community? LGBT+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and many other sexualities and genders. Many people disagree with this lifestyle, and that is where our topic comes from. Conversion therapy started in the 1960s, when aversion therapy was used. Patients were given nausea-inducing drugs, or shocked while being shown same-sex erotic. Methods similar to this are still being used today. There are many different ways therapist use to try and “fix” that can be quite harmful. One of the many is reparative therapy where different measures are taken in order to repel homosexual thoughts. Conversion camps and therapy shouldn’t be legal because of the harmful methods, the trauma it can cause, and there is no proof that they work.
INDTRODUCTION “Sex and Religion”? Those two don’t really go hand in hand,” commented a freshman student from UF. Like this student, numerous people around the world believe this misconception to be true. Whether people argue for or against the importance of gender in religion, more than just what goes on in the bedroom has been heating up lately. Many debates have sparked due to the negative connotation associated with sex when confronted about its position in religious cultures.
This can lead to conversion therapy, which is supposed to normalize someone that is believed to have the wrong sexual orientation or gender identity. Conversion therapy tactics use to include castration and shock therapy. Even though these tactics have died down, physical methods are still used. (nclrights cite) Convention therapy feed the idea that non-conformity to your gender is not a normal trait and that it should be a condition or disorder, which it was. The American Psychiatric Association (APA), previously defined not conforming to your gender as gender identity disorder. Only 15 years after opposed harsh therapy, APA changed the condition of gender identity disorder to gender dysphoria. (Obama cite) This change in perspective helps transgender people receive treatment to ease their anxiety, whether then causing it as conversion therapy
