Are contortionists really different from ordinary people? The truth is there is not really anything different between the two; except for the fact a contortionist is extremely flexible. A lot of people think that contortionists are freaks because they can bend it unusual ways, but they are actually just regular people. The reason why everyone considers them to be freaks is because there are many myths created about them that are proven incorrect. Contortionism comes with many myths and unique styles, however, contortionists have special bones and ligaments, and their spines are a little different than a regular person.
People created myths about contortionists to figure out how their flexibility became so extreme. The first myth that was created was; there were snake oils and special elixirs that the contortionists drink to become flexible, but the truth is flexibility come from either genetics, intense physical training, or it can come from both. People think that because contortionists are double-jointed, hyper mobile, they have multiple joints, but they have the same number of joints as any other human being. Another myth is you are either born a contortionist or your not, but that is not the case flexibility can be genetic, but you still have to stretch the ligaments to gain the flexibility. Some people think that contortionists have either Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or Marfan syndrome; both the syndromes are genetic, make the people have loose muscles, hyper mobile, and the people can do amazing tricks, but people with these syndromes may not have the strength for balancing in these tricks. Another myth is; it’s easier for a strong person to gain flexibility rather than a flexible person to gain a lot of strength. Lastly, men ...

...tured differently than a normal spine because the ligaments in the spine are more flexible; therefore, this allows the back to bend. Contortionists are also prone to injuries such as, limbus fractures, arthritis, dextroscoliosis, osteophytes, disc bulges, and annular tears. If contortionists did not have some of these injuries, we would not be able to enjoy this incredible and unusual art.

... activities differently. For example, females knees are more turned in towards the midline of the body. This is because they have a wider pelvic bone than males. Furthermore, females bend their knees a lot less than males when jumping and landing. When running and jumping, it is important to bend at the ankles, knees, and hips. This provides the body with a rigid support system. Females get ACL injuries because when they land, they “lock out,” that is, they straighten instead of bend their knees.
During the era of P.T. Barnum, the stars of the freak show were those that were visibly deformed, the more extraordinary their disability, the more successful of an act they were (Thomson). Thomson notes that eventually the extraordinary moved from “portent to pathology”, the freaks of the 19th and 20th-century became the medical specimens of the 21st-century (Thomson). As moral values shifted in modern day society, Rose
The binding of feet is extremely dangerous. Women today still harm themselves in a different kind of “binding”. What was once a fetish called footbinding, the forcible deformation of feet into the shape of a lotus, was the necessity of a lifestyle dangerous to oneself; although
Scoliosis surgery is a hard thing to go thru. This surgery is usually conducted by two doctors and their assistants. The doctors purpose of conducting this surgery is to straighten the back. They do this surgery usually in three to four hours for medium to large cases. For someone with scoliosis to need this surgery their curve has to be between 30-50 degrees or more at the time of surgery. For the doctor to do this he/she has to go under the muscle and hold your backbone straight while screwing stainless steel metal rods in your back bone and then glues the large incision
(Wardwell 154). Chiropractors must complete many demanding courses that require time and patience. One of the basic reasons that people doubt chiropractic care is that they do not truly understand the practice. A large controversial topic around chiropractic is the causation of strokes that supposedly come from neck manipulations, better known as neck adjustments.
The word “chiropractor” has two word origins, the Greek words cheir and praxis; meanwhile, cheir means “hand” and praxis means “practice.” Also, most of the work that chiropractors do is done by hand (Pike para. 5). In 2002, going to a chiropractor was found to be the most commonly used program for therapy. Seventy-four percent, about 4 million, of people that had back pain went to a chiropractor to get treated. Among that 74 percent of people, 66 percent of them stated that they got “a great benefit” (Pike para. 9). Many chiropractors work full time but 1 out of 3 chiropractors work part time. Chiropractors work whenever their patients need them, even on w...

Torticollis is condition in which the neck is tilted backwards and twisted painfully. The head is usually inclined from a side while the chin is turned towards the opposite side. It is also called twisted neck. This situation can be inherited (present at birth). It can also be caused by damage to the muscles of the neck or of the blood supply problems. Sometimes torticollis resolves on its own. However, there exists the possibility of relapse.
“Body Art as Visual Language” by Enid Schildkrout talks about the different forms of body modifications, and their meanings within different cultures. For example, Schildkrout says “Head shaping may be a sign of high status in one culture and low status in another, but to a total outsider, these practices may appear to be simply mutilation.” In this quote, the author talks about how one body
The good news is poor posture can be easily corrected, which will redirect the forces applied to the intervertebral disc. The bad news is a lot of people have poor posture.
Besides their other medical studies, osteopathic students get 200 hours of training in "osteopathic manipulative medicine," a hands-on technique for diagnosis and healing. Limited motion in the lower ribs, for instance, can cause pain in the stomach that seems a lot like irritable bowel syndrome. Identifying the muscle strain in the ribs through manipulation, and then treating it, can relieve the stomach distress. An osteopath learns to apply specific amounts of pressure on a body part, attempting to relax it or stimulate it. While such an approach might have raised eyebrows in the profession a decade or two ago, these days almost no one--except perhaps the crustiest old M.D.'s--dismisses it as New Age nonsense. Manipulative medicine is based on the not terribly heretical idea that structures in the body influence function, and that a problem in the structure of one body part can cause problems in the function of other parts.
When was the last time you saw a body modification that didn't have a meaning? Body modification has been around for centuries and has helped lift spirits, has helped lift self esteem, and has helped lift physical appearance. Discriminating people for their own personal modifications to their bodies is not acceptable for 3 main reasons: it’s part of people’s culture, religion, and everyday life.
...form or another. Ancient Egyptians and Ancient Chinese acrobats performed tumbling and balancing. Minoans of Crete performed marvelous gymnastic skills such as grabbing the horns of the bull with a hand in front, flipped up and over the bull’s head and safely landed on its back. Olympic gymnastics has 3 sporting events. These events are artistic, rhythmic and trampoline.
First of all, you do not have to be as flexible as a Cirque du Soleil performer in order to do yoga. Yes, being ultra bendy is beneficial, but it’s not a requirement.
