Developing as a nurse doesn’t end when a student completes their degree. A nurse continues to develop professionally and emotionally throughout their health care work life. This essay’s aim is to define Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and discuss why a portfolio is important for nurses.

CPD, as stated but the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (2015), is the “means by which members of the professions maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives.” In other words, a nurse must go through further professionally training and learning through out their career to broaden their knowledge past the degree they completed. A portfolio should also involve reflection. This means not only taking part in CPD, a nurse needs to give careful thought on their experiences working and personally reflect on their work. A portfolio can be used as evidence for continuing professional development as it holds information about activities the nurse has done through out that end. This is important due to the random auditing performed by the NMBA that can ask any nurse of proof of CPD. Certificates gained through out the nurses career can be added as well as any research and/or learning they have under taken that is relevant to their particular field.
