Social influence; it is a term which is used to describe the change in one’s behavior or emotions because of the others around that person. Social influence have different types and conformity is one of it. Conformity is best describe as a change in views or belief of an individual to fit in a particular group of people with the same views. Conformity have three types; compliance, identification and internalization. Compliance is when people conform to the majority but they do not agree with them in real. Identification conformity occurs when an individual agrees with some views or behavior for the sake of the membership of that particular group with people with similar view. Internalization is a totally different type of conformity from compliance and identification. In this type of conformity, an individual changes his or her views and behavior permanently and it becomes a part of their life. People conform because of two different social influences; normative social influence and informational social influence. In short, normative is when someone conforms because they want to be liked by the people around and to be appreciated. Informational social influence is when someone yields to the majority because they want to be right as they assume majority would have the right answer or they are right about something. In 1956, Asch conducted a study to see if the people conform due to group pressure. This study is an example of compliance conformity. 7 students who were male participated in the experiment. This type of conformity is called identification where people conform to be a part of that particular group which here was a group of guards and the prisoners. Another study which has shown conformity is Sherif’s study conducted in 1935. A group of people were put in a dark room where there was only one screen on which they were on dot which was still at its place though it seems to be moving. This experiment had two parts. In first one, participants were asked individually about the movement of the dot and then as a group. It appears that group has its own norm and it was close to the individuals’ answer. Sherif (1935) claims that he had shown conformity. The individuals were experiencing informational social influence. The study had some criticism. Participants would have changed their minds as Sherif told them they he will move the light. 3585
