Part A: Define Conformity and Non-Conformity The definition of conformity is the compliance with social standards and laws in a particular culture, environment, society and time. If this occurs the individual changes their attitudes, beliefs or actions to align more holistically with those in the surrounding groups and environment, as a result of real or perceived group pressure. This is ultimately a direct result of the power which a group has over the individual. There are two types of conformity, normative conformity, and informational conformity. The motivation behind normative conformity is the desire to be liked and accepted in society. This is most widely known as peer pressure. For example, a student begins smoking because their peers …show more content…
The behaviours of the Bra Boys have influenced the way in which they are perceived by the wider society in both a positive and negative fashion. Established in the 1990s, based in Maroubra, the Bra Boys are a gang centred on surf culture, who has gained notoriety through their behaviours, and numerous associations with crime and violence, in addition to some links with community activism. The surrounding culture and environment of Maroubra has played a great role in the formation, and thus values of this group. The Abberton brothers, Sunny, Jai, Koby, and Dakota, began this brotherhood to provide a sense of family and belonging for the children of the local Maroubra area. Nonetheless, the actions of this group have had them labelled as social deviants by the wider society, with the media perpetuating much of this negative image. Furthermore, this false representation of the Bra Boys was further reinforced through advancements in technologies, such as the internet. For example, on the night of December 22nd, 2002, approximately 200 members of the Bra Boys had an altercation involving the local police. The media had reported that gunshots were fired during this fight when in actuality there were none. Accordingly, this altercation saw this group labelled as a criminal gang, who did everything they could to rebel against …show more content…
As a result of the behaviours of the Abberton brothers during the Cronulla Riots, much of the negative stereotype surrounding this group has abated. The Cronulla Riots were a series of race riots which started in the suburb of Cronulla spreading to the surrounding areas. These riots were based on cultural differences between the local Lebanese community, and the local Australian surfer community. These riots started on the 11th December 2005 and lasted until the 12th of December 2005. Although many of the Bra Boys had joined in these riots when they eventually reached the community of Maroubra, some of the members were the reason of their cessation. After the Riots had reached Maroubra, the Abberton brothers called a media conference with a local motorcycle gang known as the Comanchero Motorcycle Club, whose members are primarily of the Lebanese culture. This conference had a major contribution in easing the tensions between the warring Lebanese and Australian communities, eventually resulting in peace between the two cultures. Upon interview, Bra Boys leader Sunny Abberton stated that "I think that this is the start, the boys have agreed to come down and talk to us, to start some dialogue between the groups, you know, to try and ease some tension". As a result of these behaviours during the

It is surprisingly difficult to pinpoint the origin of street gangs. This may be because of the inherent nature of gangs: a group of individuals who come together for the same purpose and in the case of str...
The clan markings and tattoos these men had tells me that they belong to a “gang” or group dedicated to racial hatred. I guarantee you that these men as children had no idea what racism was until someone taught it to them, from there it branched off into their individual view of who is superior and who is not.
The Slauson gang emerged in a African American community in Southern Los Angeles. The gang was originally just a club for young African American men and it served as a way of creating a sense of belonging. These young men were rejected from well-known organizations like the boy scouts, the cub scouts, and the explorer scouts simply because they were black. These young men in a show of defiance formed the Slauson club, which was at least one group that they were able to get into. The club provided them with meaning, purpose, and a sense of belonging that they had been missing in their lives. The Slauson gang was similar to other organizations in that it served the same purpose, it brought people together in what could almost be seen as an act
Surprisingly, little has been written about the historical significance of black gangs in Los Angeles (LA). Literature and firsthand interviews with Los Angeles residents seem to point to three significant periods relevant to the development of the contemporary black gangs. The first period, which followed WWII and significant black migrations from the South, is when the first major black clubs formed. After the Watts rebellion of 1965, the second period gave way to the civil rights period of Los Angeles where blacks, including those who where former club members who became politically active for the remainder of the 1960s. By the early 1970s black street gangs began to reemerge. By 1972, the Crips were firmly established and the Bloods were beginning to organize. This period saw the rise of LA’s newest gangs, which continued to grow during the 1970s, and later formed in several other cities throughout the United States by the 1990s. While black gangs do not make up the largest or most active gang population in Los Angeles today, their influence on street gang culture nationally has been profound.
Gangs have been around for many years; the founders of some of the original gangs in the United States will be discussed. The statistics of youth gangs in Canada will be presented followed by an in depth discussion about why young adults can be persuade into joining a gang. Often females do not contribute that the youth gangs in society; a discussion about the increasing presence of females and their roles among male dominate gangs. The article starts off by describing prison gangs. Prison gangs have been called “cohesive groups of prisoners, with a leader, whose criminal activities
Conformity is defined as the occurrence of people yielding to social pressures as a result of pressure from a group of their peers; when faced by the pressure to conform, people will alter their behaviour and actions to fit the norm demonstrated by their peers (Lilienfield et al., 2012). Conformity is studied so that is can be understood and used in society to facilitate positive outcomes, and help avoid situations where peoples’ predisposition to conform leads to negative consequences (Lilienfield et al., 2012). By understanding conformity and other social processes society as a whole is able to understand themselves better and motivates them to work on improving as a whole (Lilienfield et al., 2012).
¨ Show people who you are on the inside, not the copy of someone else that’s on the outside ¨ No one has heard this quote before, but it is telling everyone to be themselves and not be ashamed who they really are not the copy you have made over the years. People in our generation tend to believe that kids and teens are not being true to themselves and just wanting to be one within the crowd.
The media, reporting on the latest news around the country, there is no doubting that the media had influenced the 'moral panic' seen over Australia's youth. With article headlines such as "BODGIE RAZOR ATTACK", in the Daily Mirror , to "SAVAGE BODGIE BRAWLS" and another "BODGIE IN BOTTLE ATTACK" . These doom-laden headlines about the youth would cause mass hysteria and concern among man 'respectable' Australians. Moral panic fosters intense hostility towards the group in question as they are "fueled by a dichotomization process whereby folk devils are distinguished from folk heroes in a morality play of good versus evil" . Through the media, there may have been a mass wave of stereotyping taking place over what was considered a Bodgie/Widgie until it became anyone of youth. There will always be a bad proportion of society, so labelling a true juvenile delinquent as a Bodgie or a Widgie simply because of his or her age helps create the belief that the mistrust towards the ostracized minority group is justified.
In every society, there is conformity and nonconformity, although we may not notice it. Conformity is when someone is doing the same thing as others because they do not want to be the only one doing differently. Example, if there was a whole class raising their hands would you want to be the only one with your hand down, no so you would raise it with the rest of the class to not look like you don't know anything. This is called social pressures it when a large group is doing something and you're the only one not then you want to be doing whatever that large group is doing.
Conformity is the process of understanding to majority influence and is defined by David Myers (1991) as a change in behavior or belief a result of real or imagined group pressure
Katherine: So what is conformity? The Psychological Sciences textbook defines it as “the altering of one’s behaviors and opinions to match those of other people or to match other people’s expectations” (Gazzaniga, 2012).
Gang violence is a major problem in our society today. If nothing is done soon, gang violence could take place in our neighborhoods. MW Klein, a gang researcher, says that gangs are an aggregation of youths who perceive themselves as distinct, and that are viewed as distinct by the community. Klein also states that the gangs call forth a consistently negative image of themselves through their actions (Klein). To those involved in gangs however, gang membership provided a youth means of attempting to consolidate their gender identities (Douglas). Most of the early American street gangs have historically been ethnically based. Early gangs were mainly Irish, Polish, or Italian (Klein).
Conformity were people who follow the social chain and would not think outside the box. They will feel comfortable when they dress like others and act like others. The word conformity was within us that people would not recognize themselves as the conformists. This behavior is usually acted or behaved with a group of people or a bunch of people in the society. For example, people always wanted to buy those specific brand like Jordan and Yeezy, they are the very popular brand of shoes for young people and teenagers. So, they wanted to wear those shoes to seem as they fit in and be the role of conformist. Some people will resell these shoes for a higher profit which one can benefit from these conformity people where they will buy it. Therefore,
