How does Harold Brighouse present the differences and conflicts in the opening act and what resolutions are shown in the end? Hobson’s Choice is a play written by Harold Brighouse based in the Victorian times. This may be a reason why there were so many differences and conflicts presented in the play because it allows you to look at the historical issues and the social issues. The opening act is brimming with differences and conflicts, some obvious and some subtle. The conflicts were based upon people crossing the social boundaries and going against expectations that the Victorians had set upon us. The differences were mainly believing whether those boundaries should be crossed or not. The differences caused the conflicts. The beliefs caused different actions and those actions caused conflict. The play has two main characters, both strong willed father and daughter, Hobson and Maggie. Hobson is a prosperous Salford boot maker but also an ineffectual tyrant and spends most of his time drinking whilst his three daughters run his home and his shop. Maggie is his eldest daughter, who is immensely efficient and a lot more strong minded then her father. These two characters show the most difference between each other and any other conflict caused was mainly because of their differences. Conflict was not just between Maggie and her father but also between other characters too. For example, Willie and Maggie, Jim and Hobson, Ada and Maggie and even Alice and Vickey against Maggie. You can see that these conflicts had either Maggie or Hobson in them, the strongest characters in the play. Alice showed the first sign of conflict in the first page of the play. Harold Brighouse created such an atmosphere to show how people were in the Victorian times. He created characters that could represent many types of people at that time. For example, Hobson represented the middle class man, Maggie the strong willed daughter, Mrs Hepsworth the upper class woman, Ada the lower class women, Willie the timid, hard working man and so on. These characters had many differences and attributes which collided with other personalities. This difference between the characters was why the conflicts occurred and Brighouse managed to change some personalities to make some conflicts die.

Alice and Kevin have an interesting start to their relationship. Initially, it appears that Dana is not interested in Kevin, as she tries to reject communication and his advances through buying her lunch. This distance on Dana’s part allows readers to contemplate whether Dana is put off by Kevin’s obtrusive attitude because he is a man, because he is white, or a combination of the two. As the novel advances, Butler continues to focus Kevin’s faults in his marriage because of his identity as a white man.

The characters in this 1950s patriarchal play are amplified and give us an ambiguous ending to confirm to the audience that the constraints women face in the play are something to be considered. Williams introduces Maggie in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ as a self-evident, dominant character from very early on. Describing her voice to be “both rapid and drawling” Saying “she has the vocal tricks of a priest delivering a liturgical chant” In the play she is the first one on stage and lengthily stage directions are used conveniently to exhibit her significance in the play. The detailed description of her voice helps to build curiosity. By doing so Williams use of a dramatic technique, slowly creates tension, which is effective to the reader as it helps stimulate the beginning of the play. Very early on Maggie is illustrated as a genuine beauty “Way he always drops his eyes down my body when I'm talkin' to him” She is depicted as a very cunning woman, with the way she presents her body and looks to get what she wants. She recognises that her role in society is to be displayed as a trophy wife and be kept behind the scenes in many situations; in many ways she abides to this role, while also using it to supplement her own personal motives...
The primary dramatic focus in the play The Crucible is the moral struggle of its protagonist, John Proctor. Certain characteristics of John Proctor's character and also the environment of the Puritanical Salem alleviated this problem for him. The main issues running through out the play are a series of dilemmas that John Proctor faces. The first and foremost of these is his guilt over his adulterous affair with Abigail Williams, the second his hesitation to testify against Abigail to bring out the truth and the third, his final decision to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Because of their arguing, many characters change due to their surroundings. It also affects their minds in a way that makes them forget their personal morals and follow their families. Humanity has evolved into following what the leader says. Because of this, people tend to forget who they really are and who they are supposed to be.
To conclude, the comedy in One Man, Two Guvnors is centered around conflict to a great extent, in that the conflict that is established in the play exposes the comical nature of the characters who collide with each other and who easily fall into deception and confusion.
When reading Edith Wharton’s “The Other Two” it is easy to make immediate assumptions. Many will assume that Alice is the antagonist of the story because of the controversy surrounding her previous marriages. A major conflict is focusing on after Alice’s brain operation, she perceives to everyone and herself she’s the same girl she used to be. Unfortunately, her friends and family don’t agree that she is the same person. “You’re always saying that you are still you because you have the same brain, but who is to say that your whole personality is in your head?” (pg.5) Jenny argues that Alice is a completely different person than who she used to be. Their mother stands up for Alice but secretly does not agree with her, she does not see Alice as the daughter she used to have. “Sometimes I think my sister is dead.” (pg.5) This similar quote is showing how powerful Jenny feels about the new Alice and her failure to see how Alice is truly seeking self reflection. “Alice stared at her mother, but again her mother avoided her eyes.” (pg.5) This final quote impacts the reader 's empathetically and Alice immeasurably knowing that her own mother doesn’t accept her for who she is now.
