A prevailing theme that has shown up persistently in readings, lectures and Core Fridays is that conflict is the catalyst for change. Change is guaranteed to happen in this capricious world however when a predicament presents itself, change transpires at a much faster pace. A conflict is disagreement, argument or an obstacle and change can be described as the act of making or becoming different, these two go hand in hand. When faced with a conflict, we usually look for a solution which includes modifying something, resulting in a change. Throughout this course, we see conflicts which frequently results in a change in culture, priority, or our own way of thinking. For example, Pluto’s size sparks debate and calls for reclassification. Increasing greenhouse gases and rising temperatures resulting in new ways of thinking. Growing human population demands more efficient ways of growing food.
Before the 21st century, astronomers did not have an official definition for planets. It wasn’t until the discovery of Pluto’s comet-like size that stirred a debate for a formal definition for planets. In order to be classified as a planet, the object must be independently orbiting the sun, have enough mass so that gravity pulls it into a roughly spheroidal shape, and a mass larger than anything else which crosses its orbit. People argued that Pluto did not meet the requirements for the definition of planet, which included cleared the vicinity around its orbit. Conflict and complications will spark change. It’s not always a good thing nor is it always the right thing but nevertheless, change will always happen and will happen in this world riddled with uncertainty. Pluto’s unfitting title revealed the biases in science, showing how we need remove prejudices from objective sciences. Punk culture erupted from discrimination, showing us how we need to further develop of cultural understanding. Global warming forces geoengineers to think out of the box and puts the marine ecosystem in danger. Tainted water systems poisoned poor families, reminded us that every human life is just as important. Our population demands more food and points us to the practices of vertical farming. We need to embrace change and ameliorate it, if the change does not promote the prosperity of the world.
According to Robin (2002), there are five conflict resolution styles: confront compromise, collaborate, accommodate, and avoid. Identify the preference(s) you most often use from these resolution styles. Think about times you have interacted with styles other than your own. Once the differences between these styles are identified, they can be managed, and the appropriateness of when to use them can be determined.
When there is a conflict it leads to mostly negative changes. Meaning when there is a problem something bad happens. In the articles “Hang Up and Drive”, “ Pizza Problems”, “ How do people change a community”, “ The Boston Massacre”, “ Summer: 15 Days or 2 ½ Months?” and “ Common Sense” by Thomas Paine it demonstrates when there is a problem, consequences come with it. Conflict can cause change in community, education, and in ones perspective.
Although Pluto was discovered in 1930, limited information on the distant planet delayed a realistic understanding of its characteristics. Today Pluto remains the only planet that has not been visited by a spacecraft, yet an increasing amount of information is unfolding about this peculiar planet. The uniqueness of Pluto's orbit, rotational relationship with its satellite, spin axis, and light variations all give the planet a certain appeal.
How would you like to live in a home that is beginning to fall apart, but only to go on about your day and continue to neglect it until it all comes crashing down? Humans and animals share this beautiful planet that we call home. But this beautiful home of ours is being regularly and increasingly torn apart by our own ignorant actions. These actions of ours have begun to unravel the very world in which we live, causing a self-inflicted crisis known as Global Climate Change. Global Climate Change is a severe dilemma, and it is continuously becoming more evident to the world’s population that climate change is being caused by changes in the reflectivity of earth’s atmosphere and surface, the ever changing variations of energy from the sun reaching the earth, and the daunting increase in greenhouse gasses.
The two essays by Michael Pollan and Curtis white talk about climate change in regards to the relationship between the environment and human beings. Although the two essays share the same topic, they take the subject and engage the readers in totally different points of views. Pollan’s essay talks about global and ecological responsibility being a personal virtue while Curtis discusses the socio-economic or political issues underlying sustainability (Pollan; White). These two essays are very different in terms of voice; however these pieces of writing are both important for people all over the world to read. Climate change and environmental disasters are a real issue. Just this year, there have been more storms, cyclones, earthquakes and typhoons all over the world. One cannot look at the state of many developing counties where the majority of the population is exposed and vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This issue on developing a viable solution for the problem of anthropogenic gases and global warming is long from being found. Not only this, many people do not want to hear about this issue since they do not think it is real. Unless people have tangible proof that their cars, thermostats and aerosol cans are contributing to climate change, they are not going to give up their lifestyles. By synthesizing the two essays, one can see that there is a need for change and that it is not an issue which should be dealt with in terms of ecological factors or even personal virtue. The social, economic and political factors affecting this problem and the move towards real sustainability should also be a topic that will raise awareness.
Conflict theory is a perspective derived from the work of Karl Marx, who believe that society is a dynamic entity and it is constantly undergoing changes driven by class conflict, who holds different interests, ideas and values, for competing scare resources and aiming to maximize their own-benefits. According to the founder of conflict theory, Karl Marx, society are divided into two category: the have and the do not have, the latter is dominated by the former ones who are those people with power in hands and with the greatest political, economic and social resources. Conflict theory assumes that society makes the norms to serve the interests of the powerful.

Conflict theory are perspective in sociology psychology that accentuate the social, political, or material inequality of a social group, that analysis the broad socio-political system, or that weaken from structural functionalism and ideological conservatism. With conflict theory, you will see tensions, status, and power are unevenly distributed between groups in society, which these conflicts become the purpose of social change. Conflict theory usually arise due to competition and limited resource that is feed by domination and power, rather than consensus and conformity. This is seen a lot on macro level. Our global society has already undergone some vital paradigm shifts, such as the transition from geocentric model to heliocentric model. More recently, the world has witnessed a major transformation of counterculture, which means the young generations go against traditions and authorities. Pluto is located 7.5 billion kilometers from Earth and is only over 2,000 km in diameter. Pluto has been labeled both a planet and a dwarf planet over the years. As said by USA Today, “a planet is a celestial body that: is in orbit around the sun, is round or nearly round, and has "cleared the neighborhood" around its orbit, meaning it is not surrounded by objects of similar size and characteristics.” Pluto only follows two of the three rules of a planet. The Earth is currently locked in perpetuating spiral of climate change. While the global climate has unarguably been changing since the dawn of it's manifestation, the once steadied ebb and flow of climate change has become increasingly more unpredictable.The risk of rising sea levels, and drought plaguing the fresh water supply, during the time that flooding and sporadic storm conditions turn once fully inhabited regions into uninhabitable death traps. Climate change catalyzed by human's increased production of carbon dioxide, is more noticeable than ever in our recorded history (United States, 2014 National Climate Assessment). The perception of transformation is the change from one state to another. Conflict transformation in more specific terms is the transition through various stages. Primarily, conflict transformation takes place through the underlying stage to confrontation to negotiation to vibrant, peaceful relationships. The purpose of this essay is to choose a historical or contemporary situation in which conflict transformation has taken place in the past and/or continues to occur. In my assignment I will research the origins, causes and current status of the conflict. I will identify what has been done and/or is being done to address the conflict in a transformative manner today. I will assess this particular situation with reference to two of the structure or process models covered in this course. I will develop a plan for further action, based on structural and process models discussed in this course. Finally I will integrate Lederach’s time frame and see if I can bond it with this particular case.
