A prevailing theme that has shown up persistently in readings, lectures and Core Fridays is that conflict is the catalyst for change. Change is guaranteed to happen in this capricious world however when a predicament presents itself, change transpires at a much faster pace. A conflict is disagreement, argument or an obstacle and change can be described as the act of making or becoming different, these two go hand in hand. When faced with a conflict, we usually look for a solution which includes modifying something, resulting in a change. Throughout this course, we see conflicts which frequently results in a change in culture, priority, or our own way of thinking. For example, Pluto’s size sparks debate and calls for reclassification. Increasing greenhouse gases and rising temperatures resulting in new ways of thinking. Growing human population demands more efficient ways of growing food.
Before the 21st century, astronomers did not have an official definition for planets. It wasn’t until the discovery of Pluto’s comet-like size that stirred a debate for a formal definition for planets. In order to be classified as a planet, the object must be independently orbiting the sun, have enough mass so that gravity pulls it into a roughly spheroidal shape, and a mass larger than anything else which crosses its orbit. People argued that Pluto did not meet the requirements for the definition of planet, which included cleared the vicinity around its orbit. Pluto’s orbit also intercepts Neptune’s orbit, thus failing to meet the 3rd requirement for being a planet, a mass larger than anything else which crosses its orbit. Conflict and complications will spark change. It’s not always a good thing nor is it always the right thing but nevertheless, change will always happen and will happen in this world riddled with uncertainty. Pluto’s unfitting title revealed the biases in science, showing how we need remove prejudices from objective sciences. Punk culture erupted from discrimination, showing us how we need to further develop of cultural understanding. Global warming forces geoengineers to think out of the box and puts the marine ecosystem in danger. Tainted water systems poisoned poor families, reminded us that every human life is just as important. Our population demands more food and points us to the practices of vertical farming. We need to embrace change and ameliorate it, if the change does not promote the prosperity of the world.
