Paradigm shift, a metamorphosis, means a dramatic change of individual’s or society’s views. Our global society has already undergone some vital paradigm shifts, such as the transition from geocentric model to heliocentric model. More recently, the world has witnessed a major transformation of counterculture, which means the young generations go against traditions and authorities. It is these paradigm shifts that bring the global society a step forward to a more modern and better society. However, our society is still in need of a paradigm shift now to solve serious problems. This paradigm shift should focus more on energy, pollution, climate, water, soil and etc. Industrial revolution is also a well-known paradigm shift because it introduces many new scientific and social progresses. At the same time this paradigm shift brings humans convenience, it comes with some drawbacks, too. A large amount of fossil fuels and forests have been used; this produces a lot greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide. Data from Earth Policy Institute also indicates that every ten years are approximately 0.28 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the previous ten years since 1970. From 1880 to 2012, the global temperature has raised roughly 1.53 degrees Fahrenheit. It seems that these numbers are small, but the high-carbon society has already resulted in climate and resource issues. Ice and glaciers are melting all over the world, which lead sea level to rise rapidly. Floods and droughts will become frequent and some plant or animal species will die out due to natural hazards, such as polar bears. Mosquitoes are more likely to spread diseases because of the humid weather. Weird weather also influences crop harvests. These are technologies that closely related to environmental and recourse preservation, which help the society switch to use renewable energy. The society may devote less to produce nuclear weapons because the majority expect a peaceful world without wars. However, that does not mean the society should totally stop making those; it just means that society should spend less effort. In the long term, all countries still need them as a “security blank” in case of any future problems (Nautilus Institute 2013). It is also possible for the global society to devote less on education and poverty. These are two tough issues in current world. It takes a long time to improve these, but they still need to be solved. Nevertheless, preventing the environment from any future destroy seems to be more urgent.
