Confidence is the single most important mental factor in sports. it’s also a mental area that is ripe for change. The definition of confidence is how strongly you believe in your ability to achieve goals in every aspect. Being confident is so important because athletes have all of the ability in the world to perform well, but if they don't believe you have that ability, then they won't perform up to their ability. For example, a basketball player may be physically and technically capable of executing a dunk with one hundred percent accuracy, but she or he won't attempt the skill in a game situation if they don't have the confidence that he or she can successfully execute the skill. Confidence however is dynamic, unstable and susceptible trait that changes based on ones range of factors,and this can leave athletes feeling like they have no control over their confidence. This makes them more ready to accept that what they have experienced over a course of a season are unavoidable, but his doesn’t have to be true. Athletes can take ownership over their confidence, and can have more control. Too often athletes are their own worst enemy rather than their best ally. Keep in mind that opponents are against you and want to beat you badly. If you're also against yourself, you don't have a chance of performing to your best ability and being successful.
Prime confidence is a deep and lasting belief in one's ability. With prime confidence, you are able to stay confident even when you're not performing well. It keeps you positive, motivated, intense, focused, and emotionally in control when needed be. All athletes will go through periods where they don't perform well, but the skill is not getting caught in the vicious cycle and being able to get out of the down periods quickly. There are several keys to mastering the confidence challenge such as: developing the attitude that demanding situations are challenges to be sought out, Believing that experiencing challenges is a necessary part of becoming the best athlete you can, being well-prepared to meet the challenges, staying positive and motivated in the face of the difficulties, focusing on what you need to do to overcome the challenges, accepting that you may experience failure when faced with new challenges, and most importantly, never giving up on yourself.
Success is not given, it is earned. Waking up for a 5am skating practice is nobody’s ideal Wednesday morning, especially for a hormonal teenager like myself. However, satisfaction of landing a new jump or learning a new spin does not come from letting our ‘wants’ buyout our dreams. “By the time we’d finished, we were amazed at how much the book had taught us: about ourselves.” I don’t always succeed, nor do I always expect to. Throughout all the morning practices and late night workouts, failure is something I have learned from. I remember giving up on myself countless times after falling on a jump or not turning my edges properly, as if I had ‘writer's-block,’ feeling completely numb. Nevertheless, succeeding was the easy part, it was learning to grow into the 6 year old singing, confident, child again, and defeating the numbness. I have learned, along the way, people are going to try to undercut your success or take credit for your hard work. However, it is the end product that matters. Some schools force students to participate in organized school sports. However, I believe that schools should not make this a requirement. Some students may have medical conditions, family situations that don't allow them to participate in organized school sports, or they simply may not have the time.
A lot of times, sports seem like a contest of physical skill― a test to see who is the fastest or strongest, who has the best eye or the most endurance, who can jump the highest or can handle the ball the best. What a lot of people don’t know is that there is so much more to a sport than just the muscle and coordination. In order to excel in a sport, an athlete requires a lot of self-discipline, concentration, and self-confidence. It’s the mental factor that makes a difference. Former Olympic gold medal-winning decathlon runner Bruce Jenner once said, “You have to train your mind like you train your body” (Gregoire 1). Success or failure depends on the mental factors just as much as the physical ones. The training of the mind of an athlete is called sports psychology. The use of sports psychology has a huge impact upon an athlete’s performance. The mental skills of a sport are just as important as the physical skills. All professional athletes use sports psychology. “If they aren’t currently using it, it’s almost guaranteed they’ve used it in the past, even if they are unaware they have” (Davis, Stephens, The Exploratorium 129). It’s hard to find an experienced athlete who hasn’t used sports psychology, because without it, they probably wouldn’t be where they are. The use of sports psychology is a crucial step to becoming a successful athlete.
Sports psychology continues to evolve in order to ensure that comprehensive and evidence-based psychological services are available for athletes and teams. Athletes must have self-confidence. It’s all about the positive mindset. Having the thought of not doing well is an automatic lose for the athlete. This happened to me one time, actually many times, but here is one incident that occurred in my life. I was getting ready for my race which was the 100-yard freestyle. I told myself I wasn’t going to do well because I had not trained for it the best I could. Yeah, I did exactly what I thought, I completely bombed that race. I gained almost two seconds. It 's been outrageous , how many kids get injured per year playing youth sports for school and organizations. The youth who play sports receive plenty medical attention throughout the year due to injuries cause from actions made occuring in games. Health plays a big part in sports because if your are are not healthy many things can go wrong with the body including dehydration, heart problems , and muscle spasm. Playing a sport can be very hard to juggle with school and also getting talked down by coaches and parents. Dehydration is a high possibility because of outside sports that happen in the spring/summer and playing and practicing in humid conditions that you are not well prepared for can be bad and there will be consequences. There are studies that have shown that kids who are involved in athletics are more successful in the business world. It is only when parents turn the sporting events into an ultra-competitive requirement for their child that it can become detrimental. The lessons that sports teach kids about real life is one of the greatest benefits that can be gained from sports. Because so much can be learned through sports we need to make sure that we put focus on teaching lessons through sports rather than making it all about winning.
