Mahatma Gandhi once preached, “Man often becomes what he believes himself to be.” If an introvert were to believe in his ability to one day become an outgoing socialite, then his dream will likely become a reality. On the contrary, if he did not have faith in his social abilities, “it is possible that [he] may end by really becoming incapable of” being an extrovert. The main concept distinguishing introverts and people with confidence is their mindset and perspective on life. Shy people tend to fear others’ views of them and their actions while extroverts do as they please, without the hesitation of having to worry for their reputation. Many shy people do not recognize that when in public, “people will only see in [someone] what [they] project to them through [their] words and actions,” considering that this is a completely new encounter for both participants of the conversation. That is, assuming neither has been secretly watching the other. Considering this logic, it can be concluded that all actions or speech portrayed will directly give the other participant of conversation a new impression of this person. So, if an introvert is attempting to appear confident, they should “project [their] voice strongly and with certainty, as a confident person is assumed to do” (Milford 1). When this is accomplished, they can easily strike up a conversation with anyone, “even with the cute girls that [they] would usually feel intimidated around” (Milford 2). For an introvert, learning how to communicate easily with others should be considered a sport. The first few attempts are difficult to even try, requiring much courage in the person’s body and abilities. However, after a while, the technique is grasped and the athlete begins to feel as though the sport is becoming easier with every practice.
