Concert Report
For this concert report I had the pleasure of attending the Dana Guitar Studio in Recital at noon on Wednesday April 23rd in the Butler Museum of American Art. The concert was directed by Dr. Francois Fowler and performing in this recital were seven student guitarists from the YSU Dana School of Music. I would say there was many venues being held in this concert. One venue was a studio recital because the concert showcased the strengths and talents of the performers. The concert was also a public concert; it was free and open to the people. Finally I would say the concert held educational performance because it taught and conveyed meaning to an audience.
The first piece of music was ‘Round Midnight composed by Thelonious Monk and played by guitarist Anthony Kunovic. What I liked about this piece played by the performer was his smooth appeal as he played. The music really crafted into the title and made me think of a warm summer’s midnight. The second piece of music was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach titled Toccata and Fugue in D minor. This piece of music was played as a quartet and with great skill from the performers, they gave great talent to the fugue composition. Both The Thumb composed by Wes Montgomery and Giant Steps by John Coltrane were played as a guitar duo in the recital. The different chords and the dissonancein the chords of these pieces really created an interesting and jazzy feel to the music. The last piece that was played in the recital was Pachelbel’s ‘Loose’ Canon composed by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. From listening to this piece of music made me really think of a loose cannon going every which way from all the theme changes in the song.

Originally I always loved Pachelbel’s Can...

...at this music could be heard during the baroque style: the church, the court, or the opera house. Obviously this piece has been modified in more ways than one by the LAGQ and is now played more in a public concert style. To understand what a composer of the baroque style was feeling would be hard to label. From our learning the music was not really supposed to reflect or point out and strong piece of emotion. It was merely meant to be more impersonal for composer and to the listener.
For society of the music the time period the original piece fits into is the eighteenth century, the baroque style. I feel this music would be a good fit into baroque because the rhythms have more harmony and the dynamics of the piece do not really jump around from loud to soft.
