The final concert I attended was located in Dekelboum Concert Hall at the University of Maryland, the performers included Dr.Hinkle and the UMD Percussion Ensemble. This was their spring concert that highlighted all the work the ensemble had been collaborating on throughout the semester. The variety of repertoire focused on percussion but included a wide array of instruments from a triangle sextet, to a recreation of a John Cages Third Construction that included instruments such as congas, cowbells, snare drums, and many more. The whole concert explored many different styles of percussion music within each of the seven pieces played. …show more content…

Beginning with the triangle piece, this performance included six triangles however they were not all the same, some were larger and thicker, and some were small and thin. This performance was very interesting in my opinion because I had never seen or heard an ensemble played with only triangles. The different sizes in triangles affected each of their tone colors and their dynamics resulting in the deep full, loud sounds coming from the large thick triangles leaving the small thin triangles to have quick, light, and soft sounds. As the musicians played the triangles they were able to change the tone color by holding the metal triangle giving the initial ringing tone a muffled sound. The combination of sounds complimented each other nicely as the rhythm of this performance ranged from a fast to slow tempo. At the same time the six triangles harmonized their different melodies by blending them into one. The melody was interesting but, yet it was predictable because it was composed of repetitive ascending and descending tones. The harmony was simple, fun, and easy to follow which made this composition my favorite throughout the entire concert. The triangles often stayed in unison throughout the performance and had an ostinato, or repetitive pattern, where one would play a series of notes and then the others would repeat that series leading to the group of
