Kids Archery Set - Compound Hunting Bows
Compound hunting bows are a modern type of bow using a levering system of cables
and pulleys to bend the bow's limbs, which are usually much stiffer than those of
a traditional recurve bow or longbow. The original design of compound hunting bows
was developed as recently as 1966 by Holless Wilbur Allen in Missouri.
Using archery to kill game animals is known as bowhunting. Using a bow to hunt
animals is very different from using a firearm, because the firearm is more
powerful and therefore the hunter can kill from a greater distance. So the bow
hunter has to get up close to his prey, typically between two metres for fish and
forty metres for large game like deer.

by stealth or by waiting, concealed in a spot where game are known to gather. In order to ensure a humane kill at these ranges, it is necessary to have the right equipment, which means a powerful bow and hefty arrows. A hunting bow would typically have a draw weight of more than fifty pounds and an arrow would weigh about two ounces. A fifty pound draw weight is not difficult to achieve but it is easiest with a compound bow. Compound hunting bows can be shorter than their equivalent recurve bows or longbows and they can also be dismantled for ease of transportation to the hunting ground. Usually, compound hunting bows are used for hunting larger game animals. Compound hunting bows may utilize accessories such as fibre optic sights, stabilizers, an arrow rest and other enhancements. It is also far easier to manhandle a three or four foot compound hunting bow than a five foot recurve or a six foot longbow, when you are stalking game through a forest. Bowhunting is legal in most countries of the world although it is illegal in the United Kingdom, Germany and Ireland on the grounds of cruelty. In most countries where bowhunting is allowed there are regulations concerning when are where animals may be taken.
These regulations also cover issues such as the sex and size of the animal and the
minimum draw weight of the hunting bow, which is why compound hunting bows are
most often preferred.
Most bow hunters are pretty sensible about their sport and do not want to see an
animal suffer. They also
recognize the need for safety. Often bow hunters join an association of bow
hunters which offers advice on such
things as which kinds of compound hunting bows to use and where to hit the animal
for a swift, humane kill.
Obviously two things are important here accuracy and 'punch'. The archer has to be
able to hit the mark, usually
the heart and the arrow has to deliver enough punch to be able to kill the animal
outright.
Compound hunting bows help on both of these counts. Firstly, with accuracy: the
mechanics of compound hunting
bows mean that it is not a strain to be able to hold the string drawn at full
weight, while the hunter takes aim
and secondly, compound hunting bows can deliver the punch to be able to kill
outright.
The only problem with compound hunting bows is that they can be noisier than other
bows, so you may only get one
shot. But good, safe, considerate hunters only need one shot, so they tend
to stick with compound hunting bows.
Archers firing traditional recurve bows encounter the highest resistance and draw weight at full draw. This means less time sighting in on a target before fatigue sets in, due to the strain of holding the bow at full draw. Compound bows, on the other hand, use a cam system which places the most resistance about 2/3 of the way through the drawstroke. At full draw, the compound bow reduces the tension in the bowstring by as much as 75-80%, allowing an archer to remain in position and more carefully sight in on a target.
Hunters across the world are in range of an opportunity to hunt a trophy animal.
With this being said, that means bow hunters get first crack at deer before rifle season. The early part of season, deer are usually relaxed and often stick to their routines, allowing us as bow hunters to employ tactics that will not work at other times during the season. Hunting is generally done in the early parts of the morning or right before sunset. Most hunters are in their stands before sunrise, after properly getting settled in the game is on! The waiting game can take a great deal of patience but once a deer moves in, waiting for the right time is the final key. Since your best shot will be done with a non-moving object, you will need to wait for the deer to stop briefly as it moves through the woods. You can make a quick bleating sound to stop a deer in its tracks. Once its stop let your release fire and watch your arrow and remember to follow through. By now if you have done everything correctly you should have yourself your first deer. A blood trail, hoof prints and broken branches can help guide you to its location. It is best to tag and dress your deer where it lays because it is usually easier to drag out of the woods and there will be no question of when and where it was shot. I will not go into dressing a deer as there are YouTube videos that do a better job than I at explaining that
Since the beginning of time man has been hunting animals for food. Even before fire, man needed to hunt, because hunting was the only way to eat. At first man used things such as spears and rocks to kill its prey. As man evolved, they started using bows and arrows. Next came an early model of what we use today, the firearm. It is powerful yet easy to carry around. It puts the animal through less suffering and is a lot more efficient than previous techniques. Hunting was once a necessity, but now it is a tradition, passed on from father to son as a way to spend time together, enjoy the outdoors, and experience what our ancestors went through in hunting their dinner. Since it is considered a sport some think we are killing off the deer population, when in actuality, “While most other big-game species have declined with the spread of urbanization, the whitetail has been able to adapt to its ever-changing environment. Through the efforts of state agencies and conservation groups like Whitetails Unlimited, wildlife officials estimate today’s whitetail population to exceed 30 million” (www.whitetailsunlimited.org).
Many people have misconceptions about hunting. One such misconception is that hunting is easy and any person can go sit in the woods and wait for an animal to cross the hunter’s path. However, people who believe this are sorely mistaken. Hunting is not just sitting in the woods with a rifle; there are many other aspects that must be considered. An individual must have all preparations complete, purchase or gather the equipment needed, and know what to listen for while in the woods.
Did you know that hunters pay $796 million a year in conservation programs? Sportsmen are a huge source of revenue in the United States. Also, hunters requested an eleven percent tax on guns, ammo, and archery equipment. All these sources of income add up to a total of $1.6 billion a year. If that money was cut out of the economy it would hurt it a lot more than the people fighting against hunting would ever realize. In this paper, the goal is to inform people why sports like hunting and trapping are needed to keep the world going. Not just financially but also to keep a balance between the types of wildlife.
The bow and arrow dates back to thousands of years ago, it is estimated that they were found anywhere from 18,000BC to 25,000BC. They were used all over the world but the first arrowhead was discovered in Africa. There are many kinds of bows, the most common are the longbow and the recurve, there were many different styles created by several cultures during different times in history. In the Stone Ages, drawings discovered in caves illustrated many simple segment bows with many different shapes; flat, paddle-shaped bows were shot by Andaman Islanders. Some bows were made with wood like elm and yew, while others were made with many different materials like animal bones, horns and tendons; this was called the composite bow. The composite bow could either be made of wood and other materials or be made completely from different materials. In China, composite bows were comprised of newly harvested and dried bamboo. Scientists suggest that the bow originated from spear throwers and in between 18,000BC and 25,000BC fire was used to make stone arrowheads harder and feathers were added to make them more accurate.
Do you love to hunt deer? I do too. As avid deer hunters, we spend countless hours preparing our bows or rifles so we’re ready to make the shot when it counts. We try different ammos and arrows, we sight in our weapons and we spend a good amount of time target shooting to make sure everything’s perfect. If everything goes right, we get the chance to take the shot.
It’s a brisk November morning like any other day, but today isn’t any other day, today is the first day of firearm deer season. Shots are going off everywhere like world war three declared on deer. I’m wrapped in every hunting garment I own but winters cold embrace always finds its way in. My cheeks are rosy red and my breath was thick in the air. As I raise my shotgun and pull the trigger, my heart races and my hands shake. As I race after my prize, the sounds of leaves crunching beneath my feet are muffled by the ringing in my ears. I’m walking face to the ground like a hound on a trail and then my eyes caught it, my very first whitetail. I will never forget my first deer and the joy I felt sharing it with my family. Hunting is a passed down tradition for my family and friends. Throughout the world, millions of people participate in the spoils and adventure of the hunt. Hunting has been a pastime since the beginning of man. Hunting is one of those things either you like or you don’t like. It’s hard to explain the joys of hunting ,because it’s something one must experience for his self. Hunting does have laws and regulations you have to abide by. Are hunting regulations benefiting the hunter or the animal? This paper will discuss some of the regulations and laws, types of game, disadvantages of regulations, the pros of regulations, poachers, and ways to preserve wildlife and there habitat.
Archery was not too tough of a technique to grasp; an archer possessed a bow with arrows, which were fired at their targets during battle. The heads of these arrows were said to have originated in Africa roughly 64,000 years ago (Wikipedia, History of Archery). Arrow shafts were made from pine wood and measured roughly eight inches in length, with grooves cut to fit against the bow's string. Compared to a Hoplite or the massive cavalries, archers seemed to be less effective given that they had a certain range needing to be pertained to, yet they were just as effective in battle as anyone else. With a good range, targets could be taken out to protect other soldiers on the field. While they were great with defending their comrades as little as they could, there was little else for an archer to do while in the battle. They were limited in that aspect, and had to keep far to be useful.
Years ago, killing animals for food was part of the average man’s everyday life. While, now a days, hunting is questioned by many across the world because it is commonly viewed as a recreational activity. Many residents have a problem with the dangers that come with hunting. Not to mention, as time goes on, society seems to feel differently about animals and how they should be treated. One of the biggest debates is the harvest of white tailed deer. All over the United States, white tailed deer thrive because of the few predators that feast upon them and the large forests and habitats that these deer can flourish in. However, as buildings and subdivisions pop up left and right decreasing the white tailed deer natural habitat, the debate grows stronger. The heart of the debate is centered around ethical issues, human and deer conflicts, safety, and the benefits hunting has on the economy.
Small – Who invented the Crossbow and what was its original purpose? There are numerous conflicting historical texts as to who invented the crossbow, the ancient Greeks used a much larger crossbow called a ballista (onager later replaced this) as a siege engine. Leonardo da Vinci (an Italian inventor) had also drawn up sketches for
Archery, a sport that dates back to centuries before today, has been modernized to become more efficient and high tech. The Egyptian made the first complex bow in 2800 BC. The bow was made from sheep intestines and the arrow was light and efficient enough to be shot from 400 yards away and still penetrate the armor used at that time. Archery was a skill set that was prized in the military, especially in Rome. However, in 16th century a new tide was turning in Europe, firearms were slowly replacing the bow and arrow as military weapons. Other parts of the world were not as fast to leave behind archery this weapon. The people of the Far East employed archery in warfare until the 19th century, while people in Central and South Africa still use it to this day for hunting and intertribal fighting. Archery, in many parts of the world today, is viewed by some as a recreational sport and by others, as a competitive sport. Due to this, the shapes of the bow and the arrow have gone through many changes since the first model of the bow and arrow.
The compound bow allows you to hold the bow drawn back for a longer time without getting tired or shaky. If you hold the bow longer, that can lead to better aim. Being able to hold the bow longer is necessary for killing big game. There are many advantages for being able to draw back a bow for long periods of time.
Basically, the less mass, the greater the speed and distance. More mass will result in a higher amount of kinetic energy with a side effect of a decrease in distance. Lighter arrows will be more accurate due to having a flatter trajectory and less nose drop than a heavier arrow. Heavy arrows have more penetrative power, which is perfect for hunting game and such. However, the ideal bow in this paper will be in terms of flight and target archery, not hunting.
