Most of the people want to succeed, beside that they want to be respected by others. Some people tend more respect to a person who has good knowledge and more intellectual. So, They general way of approached is pursuing their education. Then after further classifying, there are divided into two different types of student in the university. One became engaged students, while the other became passive students. Engaged students are who can get the learning environment, so they understand the new information from their lecture and can execute the prior knowledge into new knowledge about the content then practice using it. While, passive students are who assumed attending the course will fill their minds with knowledge.
Dr. Michael Schmoker said “a study that found of 1,500 classrooms visited, only 15 percent of the classrooms had more than half of the class at least paying attention to the lesson.”. Everyone is different, indeed. But there is a possibility that they have a similarity. The similarities between engaged students and passive students are being taught by same tutors, same materials, in the same learning environment, both of them also have a same goal which is to graduate and get a job or start their own business, and the last similarity is acknowledged from university societies which means engaged students need to be acknowledged academically, while passive students need to be acknowledged by their position in organization. Both engaged and passive students realize the importance to have a good education that is required to get a decent job, but they have different path to pursue it.

Students are more willing to learn if the relationships between the students and the teachers are on the same level. This type of teaching helps the students learn how to be respectful, understanding and being able to compromise outside of the college campus. It also teaches students self-motivation and time management. When teacher are extremely aggressive on their class requirement students tend to confine and hold back and do just what they were required to. Social influence/peer groups were one of the dominant themes in my observations, survey, and literature. Social influence looks at how individual thoughts, actions and feelings are influenced by social groups (Aronson, 2010).The desire to be accepted and liked by others can lead to dangerous behavior. College life can be an overwhelming experience for first time college students and or transfer students as they struggle to manage class time and social activities in an attempt to fit-in in the new environment that they may not be used to. Students can experience too much anxiety and drop out of college or fall behind classes. Working at the Cambell Student Union information Center, I observed a great deal of students falling into this trap of social influence and peer pressure. A female student tripped as she was going up the stairs to Spot Coffee but did not fall. What appears to be a group of guys who are not popular (guys who are not very well known), were seating where popular students normally seat. The group of guys started laughing at the girl and stopped. One guy kept laughing, but it was obvious he was forcing the laughter as to purposely attract attention. He started making jokes about the girl and carrying on the laughter so he would appear to be funny. Another example, which portrays peer influence, involves parties over the weekend. Multiple students stated they were falling behind in classes on the grounds of their friends wanted to go out the night before and they did not want to seem/appear “lame” so they tagged along. As Wlodkowski (2008) contends, most people show consistency throughout adulthood. Traits, habits, modes of thinking, and the ways by which people cope and interact remain stable through old age. In other words, motivations seems stabilize in adult learning which may lead to future participation in education (Gorges & Kandler, 2011). In order to see their values on learning, classifying the four beliefs suggested by Wigfield et al. (2011) is required. Firstly, the attainment value which refers to the importance of activity could be seen from students rational in taking English course. Secondly, the intrinsic value which refers to the enjoyment in doing the activity could be seen on how they respond to the task given by the teacher and their engagement in the classroom activities. Thirdly, utility value which refers to the usefulness of activity for the future can also be seen from their reasons why taking this course. It is assumed that some of them might want to take a higher degree in education, while others want advance in their job. Some students are eager to learn and try their best; however, some students could care less about learning. Each year students decide whether they will succeed or fail in school. All students fall into one category or another. Students can be classified into three categories: Overachievers, Average Joes, and Do Not Give a Rips.
