Throughout each time period, a woman’s role in society has always been defined through her actions and ability to follow the ideal values of her tradition of that time. However, two of the greatest Hindu epics, the Mahabharata and Ramayana, reveal two significantly different women, each who represents the “ideal woman” of a different era. Sita, wife of Lord Rama, embraces the harsh treatment and humiliation as a woman from society while staying utterly faithful and honest. On the other hand, Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas, challenges the male gender and revolts against all mortification. Throughout Indian literature, the gender divide proposes these two bold iconic figures in different ways as some may say Sita represents olden times and Draupadi represents more modern times. Sita demonstrate a more conservative ideal woman whereas Draupadi portrays the stronger and more modern woman of today. Both women, being victims and acceptors of their own fate, take on their contrasting roles as women which have introduced a new outlook to woman of power and continue to influence Hindu woman of present time.
Women, not only in India but throughout the world, in the more recent years have gained enough power to raise their voice and become independent. ...ay. They were able to portray idealistic characteristics, which women of two different generations have embraced in order to be a respected woman in society. Sita, an extraordinary wife, who is willing to suffer through any consequences and humiliation her husband throws upon her, exemplifies and demonstrates the behaviors of women who were bounded by strict rules and weren’t allowed to take stands on many issues. In contrast, Draupadi, a bold woman as a whole, but also very loving and faithful to her husbands, is able to fight for her rights and also fulfill the duty of a wife wholeheartedly, which is the role many Hindu women take on today. With society and gender differences changing constantly, women are moving forward as a whole by acquiring the characteristics of both these iconic figures; being simple and humble like Sita, while also being bold and demanding.
It is through this process that demonstrated the power relations within gender, cast and class. The ideologies and believes of the people in Mangaldihi came from the religion it self in which, through the nature of creation Brahman was considerate to be the high cast as they are the followers of Lord Brahma, who created the four varnas. This ideology of creation has not only dictated the norms of cast division, which separates the pure and impure, but also has played its roles on gender roles. Encompassment is also seen in the construction of family norms as children’s are considerate to be part of the their parents bodies. Looking at the everyday practices it could also be said that there is hegemony, as the ruling class manipulated and dictated the cultural, values, ideals, beliefs and perceptions. In past decades there was a huge gap between men and women. Women were considered as a limited role such as; under sexual habits. After many years, obviously, many things have changed. Society respects women, give her rights and more independent. Recently, she has an significant role in many ways such as; in positive and negative ways. Every women can make and change the whole society because she can do what she wants to with no difficulties and inequalities. To be more specific, in our text “ The Epic of Gilgamesh” plays an important role of gender roles and shows how they are so different from each other. When we read the text it was like only focusing on Gilgamesh and Enkidu and they were males.
Narayan’s article raises many questions about third world issues are perceived by western bodies. In her article, Dislocating Cultures: Identities, Traditions, and Third World Feminism, she looks at the “‘effects’ that national contexts have on the construction of feminist issues and the ways in which understandings of issues are then affected by border crossings across national boundaries” and how culture is invoked in explaining the forms of violence that stem from these issues (p.213). She explains this phenomenon by focusing on dowry murder in India. Dowry murder has caused a large outcry and shock, even on the path of the author. But there is a certain shock that stems from western individuals, which tends to ‘exoticize’ and reinforce the notion of the other regarding Indian culture. She refers to Elisabeth Bumiller’s novel, May You be the Mother of a Hundred Sons: A Journey among the Women of India, and she narrows her focus down to chapter three “Flames: A Bride Burning and a Sati.” The author provides a context for understanding her story, in which she mentions a brief account of the mythological Goddess Sita, who threw
Valmiki's Ramayana was written around 300 B.C.E. (Carrier 207). Typically, the character of Rama is seen as the hero and the character of Sita is seen as the hero's wife. In this essay, I will compare Sita's journey of capture and inner growth with the "save the kingdom" journey of Rama, show how the two correlate, and eventually connect in the influential chastity scene. I will also prove that Sita is the "hidden hero" of this epic even though she is seen as taking a secondary role to Rama and show how this reflects women's secondary roles in society today.
The Ramayana as retold by R.K. Narayan, explores the roles and duty of women and what it takes in order to be a good woman in Indian society. He explores these roles through the women through out the epic whether it is the wife of a King or some form of deity. While in general women were viewed as subpar to men and were seen as second-class citizens, the women in the book shape the men into who they become and account for much of the manipulation of the individuals and the caretaking of the individuals. Women such as Sita and Kausalya demonstrate those women that are good. These women were regarded as beautiful, not only for their physical attributes, but for their behavior in regards to the males in the epic. They are everything women should be- they are kind and respect the males in their lives above all else. However these women are also met with their opposites, those women who have much improvement to make before being recognized as good women in the Indian society. These women, like Kaikeyi and Soorpanaka go against all Indian ideals. They use their sexuality in order to attempt to manipulate the men of the epic. They do everything in their power in order to get their way, even if it is at the cost of others.
As we compare the traditional women versus modern women, we perceive differences and similarities. Prachi fights for a belief system that controls her meanwhile Ruhi struggles with self-identity and depends on the beauty pageant to empower her as an Indian woman. Prachi defends Hinduism but at the same time, is Hinduism that restrains her from becoming “modern.” Ruhi on the other hand considers herself a very modern girl and she values freedom therefor the pageant is a road to liberation for her. Both girls struggle in distinct ways but their goal is similar, to shape their countries future.
Sati is defined as “a Hindu practice whereby a widow immolates herself on the pyre of her husband” (Dictonary.com). Sati also means righteous, women throughout the Hindu myths were willing to do anything for the man that they loved. This symbolized the perfect Indian wife to any man. Imagine being a married couple in the Hindu religion, as the wife you have to prove yourself to your husband. According to About.com it goes into brief detail of the idea of marriage in the Hindu religion; “after marriage the Hindu women lead the men by keeping the lustful propensities under control. While married, thought of any other man does not enter the mind of a Hindu lady until she loses her faith in her husband due to his consistent misbehavior and 'don't care' attitude” (Rajhans). Basically in this commitment women must keep the male under control and keep the loving relationship alive and well. Suddenly, during your marriage your husband suddenly dies and you are now left as a widow. How would you feel? Would you mope around and have sorrow for the months to come? Or would you go to the extent of suicide to be with your husband once again. Some say sati is a voluntary act chosen by the newly widowed woman to end her life by being burnt to death at her husband’s pyre. But there are moments in history that Sati was forced upon these women, some ever were dragged to their burning death (Daniel). “The custom of burning the widow on her dead husband's pyre probably did not evolve from religious background but from social background” (Daniels). This paper will explore the horrible act of Sati and how it was practiced throughout history.

The role of women in different civilizations, even though on different spectrums of the world, had many similarities and only a few differences. Women in these four civilizations: Greece, Egypt, China, and India faced many of the same hardships, struggles, and prejudices. Some of this treatment of women didn’t even end until present day (1920’s). In some of these civilizations women were able to rise up somewhat in their communities but it didn’t come without some kind of interference.
As a common theme in society, politics, and books, gendering originated from mythology. Hindu mythology repeatedly reinforces gendering in Indian society, in which the males have a certain point to prove and the females are forced to sacrifice their own happiness. In the Ramayana, a ruthless villain Ravan kidnaps Sita. Her husband, Rama, saves her, but then doubts her chastity because she has lived with another man for so long. Sita is then forced to prove her innocence. Stories with this same archetype are repeated throughout the Mahabharata, another Hindu mythological text. In this story, the female character, Draupadi, is the common wife for a group called the Pandavas. The Pandavas pawn her as a prize in a game against a villain named Duryodhana. The Pandavas lose, and Duryodhana takes Draupadi captive. As a standard characteristic of Hindu mythology, the female sacrifices for the male's ego. Hindu mythology epitomizes the roles of males and females, which as a result, influences gendering in modern-day society by disadvantaging females.
Comparatively men are not subject to gender constraints. Rama asserts that, “I am a king and my first and final dharma is toward my people”(Valmiki,649). In contrast Sita endures extreme events of calamity dependent upon Rama. Rama mentions, “Do not think of a moment Sita that I came for your sake” (Valimiki, 494). Therefore women are portrayed as secondary to honor and status of men. The role of women is predetermined to exemplify a paradigm wife, with contrastingly miniscule reciprocal behavior from the role men. Women are viewed as property of men vulnerable to suffering and hardship at the demands of the male characters. Gender roles have been a predominant factor in our world since the early emergence of human societies. They are based on expectations that societies have over the people in them. Gender roles have always been a part of society, whether they are positive or negative. The Epic of Sunjata, shows us how men and women are treated almost equally in different forms. Women are praised for their ability to birth leaders, which is similar to the early Greek Society. In most societies, women are treated less equal than men. This was prevalent in the early Indian society. No matter the gender role, it has been shown that any society cannot survive without both men and women.
Female foeticide has become a disgraceful and shocking reality of this nation. For centuries, families across many parts of India have look upon the male child as the superlative of the two sexes. A male child is seen as a blessing in the Indian society and since years people have made lavish offerings and numerous prayers in hopes for getting a son. These beliefs continue to remain even though times have changed and now much of the inequality is reducing. The Indian society recognizes a insightful faith in every individual’s right to life and dignity but this rights are dishonored when it comes to women and children in this society.
