Comparing the Use of a Leisure Center Among Men and Women
A researcher is interested in surveying the proportion of male and
female users of a leisure centre. He is able to sample 50 users of the
leisure centre and records their gender with a 1 (males) and a 2
(females). He hypothesises that there is a greater proportion of males
than females amongst all the users of the leisure centre.
Introduction
The research question is interested in determining whether there’s a
higher proportion of male leisure centre users compared to females,
using a sample of 50 individuals. The data collected should provide a
reliable insight into gender differences concerning leisure centre
usage. Organisations such as Sport England would be interested in the
findings, as the data can be used for decision making purposes. For
example, if the study finds that female leisure centre usage is lower
than males, Sport England can use this information to promote their
schemes with women in mind. This could have a direct impact on
initiatives such as ‘step into sport,’ which encourages young and
older individuals to become more active.
The findings can also be used in leisure centre management to
accommodate any difference in usage, for example, the space allocated
for changing facilities. Provision needs to be made if there’s more of
one sex. Leisure centres may also use the information for marketing
purposes. Promotion of activities and events might be aimed
specifically at one gender to increase their participation. The
leisure centre could also consider other methods of altering the
balance between male and female users, such as adjusting price
structures.
The General Household Survey (1996) shows that participation levels
are significantly divided according to gender, with 87% of males
taking part in sport at least once a year compared to 77% of women.
However, “women’s participation in sport has risen since 1987 whilst
men’s participation has fallen.” (http://www.sportengland.org/womens_participation_factsheet.pdf).
A recent popularity in keep fit style activities is the most likely
cause to the rise in female participation.
The Impact of Tourism on Betws-y-Coed Having compiled my knowledge and research into this piece of coursework, I hope to have addressed the following questions regarding Betws-y-Coed: How has tourism impacted on the economy? What visitor management is currently in place? What are the drawbacks to tourism? In my work, I hope to discover what exactly are the positive and negative aspects of tourism in the honeypot Betws-y-Coed by relating to Snowdonia National Park. It is important to contemplate the features the region has to offer, and why they are so appealing.
At the combined parks of Universal Studios (US) and Islands of Adventure (IoA) patrons have been complaining that it takes too long to both purchase park tickets and then get through the entrance lines. According to managers of the park patrons have been giving conflicting data as to which is actually having a problem. Some say that US is slower than IoA where others disagree and claim IoA is indeed the slower of the parks. To get to the truth behind the issue we conducted an observational usability study where we spent a minimum of 30 minutes at each park’s ticket purchase and entrance lines measuring the time interactions relative to time.
An investigation of 150 randomly selected local restaurants concluded that 42% of local restaurants have serious health code violations. Is this a population or a sample; explain your answer.
The number of men compared to women that I saw within this time was 22:16. The number of racial minorities that I saw compared to the number of whites was 7:31. The number of obviously homosexual couples that I saw compared to the number of obviously heterosexual couples was 1:7. The number of adults
In the example above, the survey needed not only to be expanded but diversified. By including the women and other workers, you make the statistics more accurate because it represents the TV watching habits of ALL the company’s employees. However, if the company is very large, it would be difficult to interview every single employee. The solution to this problem is called random representative sampling.
For this study ten participants were chosen to complete the study. For this particular study, the participants had to be the eldest and youngest child from the same family. They both also had to be raised in the same household. The pairs were picked at random and then asked to complete the test. There were three males tested and seven females tested.
...that I encountered in collecting data was when I was observing. Since I had no contact with the subjects, I simply made the assumption that they were picking the movie for themselves to watch. However, the person could have been renting the movie for someone else. Another limitation occurred through the survey. I had two different choices for the categories of the movies. One choice was action/adventure and the other was romance/romantic comedy. Romantic comedy and true romance movies vary in multiple ways and I should not have categorized them as one type of movie. This could have swayed my results a little. In doing this research again, I would have three categories; one action, one comedy, and one romance. I also could have interviewed a female. I only interviewed a male and therefore, I only gained detailed information from one gender’s perspective.
In this chart (3), we can see that "the change of time spending on the
Another issue of women in sports was the health risk to the women who compete. The recommendations of the scientists state that involvement in sports and other such physical activity reduces the likelihood of developing a number of life-threatening health conditions. Involvement in cooperative and competitive activities can improve a woman’s social outlook, sense of competence and emotional control.
The number of individuals in my targeted population is six. The genders of these six were 5 females and 1 male. The participants are within the age group of 15+. I intend to recruit my participants through finding people that I am regularly with. My participants will be interviewed personally.
There are approximately 350 PDA Waiver consumers that receive services through my agency. I am going to do a random sample of the consumers that have been receiving services for more than one month. I will randomly choose 75 names from the list of PDA Waiver consumers that have been receiving services for at least one month.
Demographics refer to characteristics about a population of people such as: age, income, gender, health, ethnicity and employment status. In a demographic way of marketing, gender is a highly influential demographics and in the terms of leisure, I think that gender influences leisure. When I say gender, I’m not just talking about the base terms of women and men. Sex is inherited while gender is constructed. In my opinion, gender is social expectations and societal roles that are viewed and deemed normal for a specific culture and environment. According to Ridinger and Funk, 2006, “gender is a less limiting factor in leisure choices but still matters..”, it’s less limiting but highly influential. For example, athletics was a male dominated until
The study consisted of a significant number of females compared to males, which makes it invalid to conclude that the findings support the general population. A strength was that participants were selected at random. By doing so, the study remained unbiased, thus making the results more credible.
The Department of Health (2004) state in a recent report that Sport and physical activity can help decrease the likelihood of developing diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke and type II diabetes by up to 50%, furthermore the report states that physical activity can reduce the risk of suffering a premature death by approximately 20-30%. These staggering statistics demonstrate the powerful impact physical activity can have in regards to combating health risks in the UK. The benefits to health that derive from adherence in physical activity and sport are overwhelming, however, health is not the only benefit to be obtained from an active society. Sullivan, C. (1998. cited in Collins and Kay, 2003) found that sport can help to encourage the growth of community, family and personal cohesion as well as help reduce intensity of youth delinquency. From the observations made in this paragraph it is feasible to suggest that having an active nation will result in a wide spectrum of benefits.
