With the three sculptures drawn between Archaic Greek, Classical Greek, and Egyptian cultures, they can be observed and similarities and differences can be made. The Egyptian sculpture is different from the other two sculptures in that it is the only one that involves some clothing; the man is wearing a loincloth and the woman is wearing a straight dress. The other two sculptures are completely naked. There is a difference amongst the three sculptures in how they are positioned. The Egyptian sculpture is in a straight standing up position with clothes on. The Archaic Greek sculpture is in the same straight standing up position with no clothes on. The difference between an archaic statue such as Kroisos (fig. 5-11) and a classical statue such as Doryphoros (fig. 5-42) may not seem very great in a single glance. In fact, you may not notice any differences in that one glance. Yet, if you were to look at them closely, you can see that these two statues actually have very little in common.
The Statue of a kouros and the Portrait statue of a boy both depict similar subjects, however are greatly different in how they accomplish this task. Through detail, or lack there of, the Greeks and Romans are able to display a certain value they have in its members. These two statues were made about 500 years apart and approach the sculpting process quit differently. The Greek statue seems to use geometric exaggerated lines to form the body while the Romans use a more realistic approach and sculpt the body with a more rounded finish. Statue of a kouros, from about 590 B.C and Portrait of a boy, from about the first century, do not share any great technical aspects and are basically nothing alike.
This paper will discuss and compare A Faun Teased by Children sculpture, of the Italian Baroque style, and the Little Fourteen Year Old Dancer of the French impressionist style. These two sculptures give us a clear insight and allows us to peer in on the moment that is taking place. The active movement, strong diagonals and dramatic facial expressions of the figures in A Faun Teased by Children tells the on looker a vivid detailed story of the actions that are taking place and what role each figure is taking on, in a mythical scene, while the stagnant and serene pose of the Fourteen Year Old Girl resonates calmness and a moment that has not taken place just yet.
Ancient Greek sculpture is celebrated for its ground-breaking representation of the human figure. Nevertheless, this prominent artistic established practice did not just emerge fully developed. Ancient Greek sculpture is generally branched in the various stages of progression: the three fundamental stages are the archaic, classical, and Hellenistic periods. It is also worth noting that there is an earlier phase referred to as the Geometric Period in which the characteristics that would come to define ancient Greek sculpture were starting to take shape.
I chose this sculpture because I was intrigued by the position of the man and the centaur. I was able to witness that the centaur is trying to invade the personal space of the man. The sculpture showed me that there is a strong relationship between man and creature. The quality of the sculpture made me realize that animals play a big part of a human’s life and can be seen as threatening to humans. It was interesting to see that both the man and centaur were created to have almost of the same structures. This statue has a metallic brown and green, bronze tone and appeared undersized. It has a height of four and a half feet, and six inches. It has long, thin, legs with calf muscles, and bulging thighs. The sculpture evolved from Olympia, Greece. The man and centaur sculpture was created in 750 BCE during an orderly time period. The colors used for this sculpture, proved that it has a longer lasting mold for statues. On the left side of the sculpture, the man has a wrap on his head, that can symbolize, he is some form of a god. On the right side, the centaur has the same head piece as the man, but the body of a horse. It can be seen that the man and
Egyptian art is infamous across the world - classified by the monumental pyramids, and the Sphinx. Although these are both valid forms of Egyptian art, they do not make up the entire artistic history of the country. On the contrary, perhaps the most replicated example of classic Egyptian art, from the Old Kingdom, can be found in their rendering of the human form. An interest in portraiture developed early in Egypt. (Gardner, 75) Whether painted on pottery, or cut into rock, the figures all had notably Egyptian characteristics. The pieces of art I will be comparing and contrasting are the three statues of David, by Donatello (Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi), Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni), and Bernini (Gian Lorenzo Bernini). The statues are modeled after the biblical David, who was destined to become the second king of Israel. Also most famously known as the slayer of the Philistine giant Goliath with a stone and a sling. The sculptures are all based on the same biblical hero, but differ from one another. Each David is unique in its own certain way.

Sculptures are one of the earliest forms of art, right next to its 2-dimensional “cousin”, drawings. Two specific sculptures that take place in B.C. era are “Memi&Sabu” and “Statue of Gudea”. When comparing the two, one will find very few similarities. One of those similarities is the obvious: they are of actual people who once lived in the times they were carved. If looked closely, it can be notifiable that the blocky style the people were carved in is similar as well.
When I first glanced at the title, my first thoughts went straight to Greek culture and how the people of that time period dressed. As I glanced at the sculpture itself, my attention went right to the detail of both figures and how their bodies are godlike, which is a goal
The Greeks had not yet embraced the nude sculpture. During the archaic period of Greek history, women were seen in static positions, standing upright, same as male counterparts. Women were fully clothed and led the viewer to only see a modest appearance. This is apparent the archaic period of Greek art, from around 700 BCE to 480 BCE, when the kouros sculptures were produced. The statues were made with the arms close to the body and a smile that was present in both male and female sculptures. Another characteristic of these statues were the almond shaped eyes. This style of static sculpture was closely related to the Egyptian sculptures of the same stance. Unlike the Egyptian sculptures, the Greek sculptures began to change (Kuros). The change in Greek sculpture started rather subtle with the appearance of the contrapasso, S curve, in the body of the sculpture. The contrapasso appears to show one foot more forward than the other and a curve in the body. This style of sculpture marked the beginning of classical age of art. During the classical period, around 480-323 BCE, women were being portrayed with wet drapery, a less modest but a continuation of being fully clothed. One example of this would be a woman with wet drapery style clothing. This is seen in Nike Adjusting her Sandal. In this sculpture, Athena is seen clothed but the fabric appears to be sticking to her features,
In modern society, Greek pottery is considered an art which is regarded as much for its aesthetic splendor as its historical significance. However, the role of pottery in ancient Greek culture was far more functional as its primary use was for the transportation and storage of such liquids as water and wine (Encyclopedia Britannica). Due to the durability of the fired clay material, Greek pottery is the only remaining art form that allows us to explore the evolution of this ancient culture. Through that examination, three distinct stylistic periods have been unveiled: Geometric, Orientalizing and Archaic. Sculptures were one of the most important things in the Egyptian world. They were important because they had a very important function in the tombs as substitute for the mummification. These were made out of wood, clay, and other different materials, but the majority of the statues were made of stone. Some examples that are in the textbook of the sculptures are Khafe, and the seated scribe. Khafe was an enthroned divine ruler with a perfect body. The pose he is making is of complete stillness which showed off the body, this sculpture was made out of the stone called diorite which is a dark stone, it was hard to get as they had brought it 400 miles from the Nile River. The Seated Scribe was characterized as the portrait of the Egyptian god-kings didn’t extend to the portrayal of non-elite individuals. He had signs that he was aging which is a sign that is inappropriate for an Egyptian to age they should stay nice and young looking like Khafre did but the seated scribe was different then him. He seemed to be more relaxed and not worried about what he looked like but how he lived his life. The painting I thought was the most interesting was Goats treading seed and cattle fording a canal because it was showing how they used the Nile River for the passage to the afterlife and how they were combined with stereotypical poses for the human and aminals with unconventional postures and such detail to the
This sculpture is the Greek God Apollo. Apollo is playing a lyre resting on a plinth; he is clean shaven and youthful looking. In the second example Apollo is standing holding an arrow. He is pretty much fully naked in both sculptures. Apollo is the God of the Sun, Poetry, Music and Healing.
