Comparing The Monkey's Paw and The Signalman
In these two short stories both authors write gothic tale stories.
Both authors use gothic tale features e.g they use darkness, isolation
and use of senses. Both authors’ u similar methods to create tension
e.g. they both use repetition and short sentences. They both use their
senses e.g. in the monkeys paw they use their sense of hearing and
feeling, for example they hear the door knocking and use a lot of
sight through Mr.White cant see where the monkeys paw is and he use
his sense of feeling to try and find it on the floor. In the signalman
they use a lot of feeling, for example
“It was made of a clammy stone, that became oozier and wetter as I
went down.”
In “The monkeys paw” W.W.Jacobs creates tension several times e.g.
when the sergeant-major says
“Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud” then says
“But I warn you of the consequences,” and then Mr.White wishes
straight after. He makes a lot of tension when the man is walking back
and forth outside of Mr.White’ gate, and then when he finally comes to
the door he starts to use short sentences and a lot of question asking
e.g.
“Is anything the matter? She asked breathlessly. Has anything happened
to Herbert? What is it? What is it?” He creates a lot of tension at
the end of the story when they wish Herbert to live again, there was
several knock and as his wife goes to open the door he just gets to
wish before his wife opens the door. There is a lot of tension after
they first wished ten Herbert was down stairs on his own and simian
faces started to appear in the fire, this creates tension because you
wonder what is Herbert going to react to it.
The story opens with a hook. It tells you that it’s going to be some
kind of horror ghost story because it tells you what type of setting

In the book, The Pearl, by John Steinbeck, and the short story “The Monkey's Paw” by W.W. Jacobs, both authors would agree that in these stories, if you intervene with your destiny/fate, a bad outcome is sure to happen. In The Pearl, Kino finds the pearl of the world. Kino wants to sell the pearl, in return for money, but the pearl ends up bringing the opposite of prosperity and brings bad fortune. Also, In “The Monkey's Paw”, Mr.White also wishes for money, but as he is warned, terrible things come when u interrupt with your fate.

The fall of Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, fell to North Vietnamese force on 30 April 201. This event marked the end of the Vietnam War. On this day Vietnam encounters the largest exodus of immigrants as Vietnam governed by the communist regime. Lan Cao in her novel Monkey Bridge reflects the struggle of the Vietnamese Americans immigrants in America. Lan Cao was born in Vietnam in 1961 and moved to live in America when she was thirteen years old as a result of the Vietnam War. Her novel Monkey Bridge published in 1997, it is a semi-autobiographical story of a mother and her daughter who leave Vietnam and settled in the United States. It considers to be the first novel by a Vietnamese American about the war experience. Monkey Bridge has two narrators. On the other hand, Thanh fells that by keeping her daughter away from the truth of their shameful history, she can protect her from having the same pain and sorrow that she once had. The Hadley’s, a family that has everything, a house that cost about $30,000 in a time where the average house cost $8,200, which rocks them to sleep and ties their shoes. The White’s, a family that must work for everything and wish for certain possessions, such as money. These families showcased in two different short stories seem like polar opposites, and while they are very different, they have more in common than what is portrayed on the surface. The “Monkey’s Paw” deals with a family that is able to make it by, however their monetary situation could be improved, and they find themselves coming across a talisman that caused them nothing but issues. On the other hand, “The Veldt” deals with a family who is spoiled and has access to everything
In W.W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw” there is a family named the Whites who receive a magic monkey paw that can grant three wishes to them, but they are forewarned that each wish will have a horrible consequence. They do not heed the warning and wish for money to pay off their house debt and their son dies as repercussion for messing with fate. Mrs.White tries to bring her son back to life with the monkey’s paw, but her wish was undone by her husband’s fear of seeing their son’s mangled body. When people mess with fate and alter destiny they must also face an equal consequence for straying the path that was set for them.
The “Monkey’s Paw” reveals an intriguing story of destiny and death. The Theme challenges the classical ideas of destiny and fate.

The stories of Joyce Carol Oates "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" and William W. Jacobs "The Monkey's Paw" have several different degrees of symbols and themes that warn the characters of emitted danger or bad outcomes in their stories that can be mirrored of each other. In, these stories the characters do not follow the warnings from these symbols and themes from the clues that are presented to them. From these terrible choices that are decided, they find themselves in situations that could have been avoided, but they did not proceed with. My analysis of these symbols and themes will demonstrate what they are and show the obvious of what to look for. So, let us begin on this analysis and see how the symbols and themes could have
