In today's society, stereotyping is a very typical thing people do. It’s normal for us to stereotype because we need to figure someone out quickly or we find ourselves lazy. We assume we can find out who individuals truly are by the simple things they say or do. A major disadvantage of stereotyping is not being able to know someone for who they really are. In the story "Shout" written by Dagoberto Gilb, we are introduced to an unnamed Hispanic male who is a stressed, hard-working husband and father who puts his family’s needs above his longing for tranquility and relaxation. In the moment of revealing her pregnancy could have opened the door for his anger, but he chose to be intimate with his wife. At the closing of the story, he decides to take another shower in which “His breath sputtered and noises hopped from his throat”, which tells us that he is fighting back emotion and maybe even a few tears
(Gilb 543). In the end, even though he loses his cool and might slip some regretful words out, he's just a man that's sympathetic and emotional.

The unnamed protagonist of "Shout" expresses himself as one who is an estranged and jobless individual, but, is truly a hard-working man who is devoted to his wife and kids; his attitude also comes off as a crude, unapologetic angry man, but he really is a sympathetic, emotional man. Even though the unnamed man exemplifies attitudes and actions that appear to define him as a hostile and inebriated man, we now know that deep down he shows that he is a devoted husband and father that cares very much for his family. We can't always decide who people are just by the things they say or do. We must dig, on a more extensive level, to uncover who they truly
