In today's society, stereotyping is a very typical thing people do. It’s normal for us to
stereotype because we need to figure someone out quickly or we find ourselves lazy. We
assume we can find out who individuals truly are by the simple things they say or do. A major
disadvantage of stereotyping is not being able to know someone for who they really are. In the
story "Shout" written by Dagoberto Gilb, we are introduced to an unnamed Hispanic male who is
a stressed, hard-working husband and father who puts his family’s needs above his longing for
tranquility and relaxation. After a grueling day at work, the protagonist, longing for peace and
quiet, finds himself in a screaming engagement with his family and neighbor. The unnamed

male of "Shout" presents himself as an estranged and jobless alcoholic but really, he is a hard-working husband and father who is devoted to his family; his attitude also suggests he is a crude, unapologetic angry man, but indeed is a sympathetic and emotional human. Some alcoholics are presumed non-stop drinkers who are unable to hold a job as well as estranged from their family. To start with, the unnamed protagonist exhibits that stereotype in a few ways which includes grabbing a beer as soon as he gets in the door from work, taking a beer to consume while he showers, and continually drinking until he can fall asleep. Despite his similarities to the common cliché, we can research more into who this unnamed man actually is. The unnamed man works in the field of construction that consists of hot, humid days not to mention, how tiring and stressful his work is. He also spends the evenings, after work, with his family when he could be out drinking somewhere else. To conclude, we can understand that even Green 2 though he enjoys beer, he is still a hard-working husband and father that is intensely devoted to his wife and kids. People with anger issues sometimes identify with having a crude attitude and being unapologetic. Our unnamed protagonist exemplifies this cliché with actions that include yelling at his wife, screaming at his kids, and having a shouting match with the vulgar neighbor. In the face of everything that is irritating him, if we look deeper into his actions at the end of the story, we see a softer side. After a long, hard day at work and dealing with frustrating circumstances at home, we read about an intimate moment between him and his wife in bed where she reveals she is pregnant and apologizes for yelling at her.
In the moment of revealing her pregnancy could
have opened the door for his anger, but he chose to be intimate with his wife. At the closing of
the story, he decides to take another shower in which “His breath sputtered and noises hopped
from his throat”, which tells us that he is fighting back emotion and maybe even a few tears
(Gilb 543). In the end, even though he loses his cool and might slip some regretful words out,
he's just a man that's sympathetic and emotional.
The unnamed protagonist of "Shout" expresses himself as one who is an estranged and
jobless individual, but, is truly a hard-working man who is devoted to his wife and kids; his
attitude also comes off as a crude, unapologetic angry man, but he really is a sympathetic,
emotional man. Even though the unnamed man exemplifies attitudes and actions that appear to
define him as a hostile and inebriated man, we now know that deep down he shows that he is a
devoted husband and father that cares very much for his family. We can't always decide who
people are just by the things they say or do. We must dig, on a more extensive level, to uncover
who they truly
are.
Everyday we experience stereotyping in one way or another. Over the years stereotyping has become such a large part of our society that it is a vital part of our everyday communication. It has caused many of us to not really think about who a person really is, or what they are about, but to accept instead a certain stereotype that has already been created by our society and given to an individual. Stephanie Ericsson makes an excellent point in her essay when she says “they take a single tree, and make it into a landscape.” The statement she was trying to make by saying this is that many times, a stereotype is made by an individual because of something done by one particular person in a certain group, but is then given to the whole group as a result. Our society has given a stereotype to practically every form of human being out there. Some examples of this are the blond that is said to be dumb, the kid with glasse...
Literary magazines were not remotely interested in publishing Gilb’s stories, which focus primarily on the professional and personal struggles of working-class Mexican Americans. But his unapologetic stories about working-class Mexican Americans have made him a voice of his people (Reid130). Gilb’s short stories are set vividly in cites of the desert Southwest and usually feature a Hispanic protagonist who is good-hearted but often irresponsible and is forever one pink slip or automotive breakdown away from disaster (Reid130).

Whether you 're off or on the social media there will always be stereotyping because we all do it without noticing it. Stereotyping is the way to fit in society, just like how Sandy in Grease became rebellious just to fit in the description Danny was looking for. The characters in Grease used all types of stereotypes, for instance; being cool, popular, tough, getting into trouble, smoking, drinking and other stereotyping. As the media increases with their stereotyping and showing their audience of how the ideal woman or man should be, stereotyping will continue to happen. In these cases different types of stereotyping is amongst it whether it be gender, racial, sexuality, ethnicity, or social class. As long as the media exposes any of these to their audience we will believe anything they tell us because that’s just the way society is. We abide by what someone else tell us so we assume it must be true, but in reality it is what one wants to believe and what one wants to abide too. So let 's take this as a lesson that stereotyping is inevitable and will continue to happen as long as we take in what the media wants to show us or what one wants to believe from another
Everyone has heard the saying don’t judge a book by a cover. Sadly every minute of the day someone gets judged because of assumptions that are not correct. These assumptions overtime eventually lead to stereotypes. A stereotype is an image or idea of a particular type of person. Stereotyping a person is seen in many differents aspects such as race, groups, beliefs, appearance, etc. An individual may ask why people are stereotyped or stereotype. In reality stereotyping helps people categorize the different type of people. It narrows down the options of who one might want to associate with. Stereotyping can have its negatives, it makes people ignore how others really are. It may lead to a person not wanting to hang out with another person because of the stereotype that persons group has. Everyday the general public use cars for the means of transportation. But what about when people use their car for more than transportation, car enthusiasts often modify their cars to their likings. Enthusiasts often join car clubs to share their common interests with other car enthusiasts. Often the people in car clubs have a stereotype of being juvenile, racing a lot, low-life bums, and ghetto when actually most do not have those characteristics.

There was once a man, for the sake of the story we’ll name him James. James had been lucky enough to be born into a great family. His parents had decent jobs their whole lives, so his family had money. With that money and a little bit of hard work it was not too hard for James to make it into one of the top universities, and graduate straight into a decent paying job. After a few years working at that job James had earned a nice house and a beautiful car. At this time he realized that he felt like he needed something more. James decided that with where he was financially now would be a good time to start a family. He began the long journey looking for a wife; and a few years later he found the perfect women, fell in love, and had a child. The one thing James didn’t know about having a family and having a job is how to juggle the two together. He didn’t want to have less money now than he did before he got married, so he started working more hours in order to make up for the income he was losing. In doing this he missed his only child growing up. Before he knew it he was missing his son’s baseball games. His wife was begging him to come home. James was making empty promises, and he was losing control of his life. One day he came home from work and saw a bunch of boxes. His wife came out of their bedroom kissed him on his cheek and walked out the front door; followed by their son. That night James reflected back on a lot of the choices he had made. He realized that he had been doing everything wrong. He thought back to a time when his father took days off of work to do things for him and his mom. At that moment he realized that he needed to change his ways. He realized that there are many things that had a play in his su...

There is no doubt that at some point in life, we have all been guilty of judging somebody before we really got to know them. Perhaps we judged them based on their weight, their gender, their hair color, their clothing style, or maybe even all of those things combined. We were guilty of making that person into yet another stereotype. Or perhaps we have been on the receiving end of that judgment, and we may not have known it. At some point, everyone has most likely been a stereotype in one way or another.
Stereotyping has been a huge problem in society for many decades. Everyone does it whether it is race, looks, and language or body types. If society did less stereotyping our society might be a little more complicated and more peaceful. If you look different, dress different, or act different out of the norm you are being judge or stereotype. I was always taught do not judge a book by its cover. That phrase is very powerful and if society followed that phrase we could be a more peaceful community.
“a practical man, rough and ready in his manners and quick to decry any appearance of affectation in others…a great improviser, ever willing to “have a go” at anything, but willing too to be content with a task done in a way that is “near enough”.… He swears hard and consistently, gambles heavily and often, and drinks deeply on occasion.… He is a “hard case”, sceptical about the value of religion and intellectual and cultural pursuits
Stereotyping is a form of pre judgement that is as prevalent in today's society as it was 2000 years ago. It is a social attitude that has stood the test of time and received much attention by social psychologists and philosophers alike. Many approaches to, or theories of stereotyping have thus been raised. This essay evaluates the cognitive approach that categorisation is an essential cognitive process that inevitably leads to stereotyping. Hamilton (1979) calls this a 'depressing dilemma'.
This belief that one is not worthy of a stereotype is completely devastating to the soul and eventual quality of life.
With regards to human behavior, studies show that social perceptions are formed as a mixture of experience and expectations of how a individuals defining physical or overriding characteristics will impact how we imagine that person to be for instance through their ethnicity, nationality, religion, class or if they are living with a disability. These assumptions are often deep-rooted and formed in childhood.
