The two movies I have chosen to review are the 2013 version of The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann, and the 1992 film A Few Good Men directed by Rob Reiner. Both films fall into the genre of drama, and both films have a sub-genre. Both films, A Few Good Men and the Great Gatsby are categorized as drama. Both conform to the genre of drama as they both feature dramatic turns and rely on emotional development. A Few Good Men falls into the sub-genre of courtroom drama, while The Great Gatsby is a costume drama. A courtroom drama involves lawyers, and courtroom scenes that are a major part of the main plot for the film. Costume dramas involve being set in a particular historical period, and the actors and actresses dress in historical costumes. Neither film challenge genre conventions. The time period that it’s set in is the 1920’s when everything was extremely prosperous. Women started wearing shorter dresses and getting shorter haircuts. The Great Gatsby shows modern conventions in film making, such as less long takes, and more special effects. Both versions of The Great Gatsby are blockbuster films. A Few Good Men was created in 1992, and is set in that time period. The military is under extreme criticism in this time period and that is represented in the film. Reiner attempted to be as correct as possible when using the military terms and legal proceedings. They show trends of earlier film making, such as long takes, and direct cuts. There are less special effects because they are not needed and would not match the mis-en-scene of the film. Because A Few Good Men was made in the early 1900’s when film conventions were very different. This film uses the conventions that were popular during the time period it was created.
