Gaiman’s Graveyard Book and Grimm’s “Godfather Death”: How One’s Traumatic Environment Causes Impulsivity. Many people make impulsive decisions in their life, however, the reason for their impulsivity could be because of the environment they grew up in. Research shows that a person’s environment can play a role in impulsive behavior. They can also be linked to certain risk factors that may have been caused by the environment they live in or grew up in. If one grew up in an impoverished area, one might make more impulsive decisions when it comes to money or resources they may need. Impulsivity is defined as the tendency to act without thinking. You may think of more immediate rewards than long-term rewards, and ignore the possible consequences. …show more content…
Impulsive decisions can lead to negative consequences, and is an unhealthy habit that many people make. In The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, the main character Bod was forced to live in a graveyard surrounded by ghosts because of the unfortunate death of his parents by a man named Jack who is now hunting Bod. Because of this, Bod never got to live a “normal” life and was forced to live in the Graveyard so he would be protected. In the fairy tale “Godfather Death” a boy was given the gift by the devil to be the world's most famous physician. When at the bed of a sick person, if the physician saw death at the person's feet, he is supposed to give the person to death. However, he ignores this twice and has to face the consequences of his actions. In both Neil Gaimans’ The Graveyard Book and Jacob and Wilhelm Grimms’ “Godfather Death”, a traumatic childhood contributes to the development of impulsive behavior later in life. In Neil Gaiman’s Graveyard book, the trauma of being hunted causes Bod to become dangerously impulsive. A man named Jack had entered Bod’s home when he was just a baby and did unspeakable things, “He had left the woman in her bed, the man on the bedroom floor, the older …show more content…
Seeing that the trauma of his parents murder still affects Bod, he makes another impulsive decision. He follows a stranger into a room to get the answers he wants. This turned out to be a trap, and the man he followed was indeed the person who murdered Bod's parents, otherwise known as Jack. Everyone grows up in different environments, some grow up in traumatic environments and some grow up in comfortable ones, however in both stories the characters have grown up in traumatic ones. In the fairy tale “Godfather Death”, because the physician grew up in a traumatic, harsh environment, he makes an impulsive decision that ultimately costs him his life. In “Godfather Death”, “A poor man had twelve children and had to work day and night in order to feed them”(Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm). Through the use of the phrase “a poor man” the reader can now infer that the physician grew up poor and in turn grew up in a traumatic environment. Growing up in a poor environment can expose children to chronic stress and uncertainty, which can have long-term effects. Children from low income families may experience housing issues,
Children born into this world are immediately given love and care though for some, they may not receive these necessities which can introduce problems into the child's life. A child may be left with emotional instability if not given the proper care or companion. These problems which arise early on affect the development and growth for one as shown in society, shows, and books. As demonstrated in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, because of Victor’s mistreatment towards his creature, lacking proper care and attention led to the poor development of his “child”.
He has endured and overcame many fears and struggles, but during this section, we truly acquire an insight of what the little boy is actually like – his thoughts, his opinions, his personality. Contrary to his surroundings, the little boy is vibrant and almost the only lively thing around. I love him! He is awfully appalled by the “bad guys” and shockingly sympathetic toward dead people. For example, when the father raided a house and found food, the little boy suggested that they should thank them because even though they’re dead or gone, without them, the little boy and father would starve. My heart goes out to him because he is enduring things little boys should never go through, even if this novel is just a fictional
Parental influences can negatively impact a child’s life. An example of this is in the novel
An Analysis of the Grimm Brothers by Edgar Allen Poe Edgar Allen Poe wrote a paper on the philosophy of writing good short fiction. It was published in a book called ‘New short story theories’ by Charles E May. He stated: ‘What I here propound is true: -therefore it cannot die:-or if by any means it be now trodden down so that it die, it will ‘rise again to the life everlasting’ nevertheless, it is as a poem only that I wish this work to be judged after I am dead. Satel says, “Addiction does indeed discriminate, it chooses those who are bad at delaying gratification” (2). Those who simply cannot resist the instant relief or euphoria are more likely to become addicts. Addiction also preys on those who do not possess the proper skills for gauging consequences. Those suffering from this trait are unable to look ahead at the true horror that awaits them at the end of the long dark tunnel. Another trait that increases the risk of addiction is impulsivity. Impulsive people have issues controlling themselves, and they often make quick decisions that were not through. Impulsivity characteristics often go hand in hand with the previously stated traits, making it one of the hardest to overcome. While personality traits may be genetic or just how we are predisposed, drug use often alters ones entire being, including these traits. So, who is to say if the traits listed above were not birthed from the very womb of drug use itself.
In his story¡¨Boys,¡¨ Rick Moody narrates the process of growing up of boys. The author mentions every single outcome that most of the boys are likely to encounter in their lives. Boys grow up by experiencing some major incidents. In this case, the writer uses the death of their father as an example of that major incident. In another story¡¨Orientation,¡¨ Daniel Orozco describes the scenario in the office. Orozco brings out the typical office affairs to reflect social structure and human relationship.
When a child experiences trauma, it stays with them for the rest of their life. When a child experiences abuse, one of the highest forms of trauma, they can do little to stop it from affecting everything they do. Tobias Wolff’s memoir, This Boy’s Life, Illustrates this. While it can be said that Rosemary, the mother of Jack, was in many ways responsible for his life, she herself can not solely be blamed. The trauma and abuse she experienced as a child contributed greatly to her choices, and her son’s life. This shows that adversity in Rosemary’s life lead to her not being able to act normally, and this caused the life of her son.
Impulsive behavior is something that people can do or say that can affect them for a short time or for the rest of their life. When doing without thinking about consequences, people tend to make big or small decisions that can affect their lifetime dramatically. A example of this occurring through the text is the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare where Romeo Montague Demonstrates urgent impulsiveness.
Learning to deal with difficult situations is a part of growing up, throughout our lives we face many challenges and situations that we must learn to overcome and move on from. The most challenging of all is learning to deal with the death of a loved one or someone very close to you such as a best friend, especially when it is premature. The short story by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm ‘The Shroud’ is to do with the loss of a once adored seven-year old boy and the grief and mourning which occurs as a result of such a loss by the mother. However, this story does not teach us to dwell on such a problem, but in fact embrace it, accept it and overcome it, perhaps with the help of a higher person, in this case God.
The Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault are both very well-known authors of fairytales. Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm are usually the most recognized in our society, but Perrault has his own version of many of the same tales. These authors have very different methods and styles of writing, as well as differences in morals of their stories. Here I will assess some of the differences between certain tales, as well as provide some background behind the authors.
Compulsive behaviors are often thought to involve free will. It also is contrasted to be the same as compelled behavior, where the person is under the influence that they are behaving some way under their own accord. If someone resists an impulse it become increasingly difficult to be successful over time. By resisting these impulses, they experience excruciating levels of psychological pain; making it feel literally impossible to resist urges. Compulsive people have not lost the amount of self-control they have, rather that they are over whelmed by the psychological influence of the addictive behavior. These behaviors are not necessarily caused by the irresistible desires, rather habitual repetitive patterns (Henden, Melberg, & Rogeberg, 2013).
Taking responsibility for one's actions is a hallmark of maturity, leadership, and capability. When one can admit their faults or wrongdoings when they happen, life usually moves along much smoother. Consequences for those who attempt to shift blame off themselves for their own misdeeds tend to be much more severe than those who acknowledge them as their own. In literature, agency is the ability of a character to act on their environment, those who act positively and take responsibility for their actions would be said to have good agency. The absence of this quality can result in large consequences for not only the person lacking in agency, but those around them as well. Victor Frankenstein and Rodion Raskolnikov’s delusions of grandeur, unwillingness
As he points out, impulsivity can be something very positive and refreshing and in many cases is harmless. For example, an impulsive person may wake up one morning and spontaneously decide to take a trip to another state. In this example impulsivity is adding fun and excitement to the individual’s life, and for those around them that might be along for the ride. Other examples of impulsivity include reacting quickly to an opportunity one might have otherwise missed. However, there are times when it can create conflict and cause individuals to violate social norms. In any case where an individual might do something spontaneous to their appearance they may receive negative reactions from their peers, thus creating a stressful environment for themselves. An example of this would be when Britney Spears shaved her head in 2007, shocking everyone and receiving a lot of criticism and generally negative attention for this behavior. Highly impulsive individuals are also more likely to blurt out things that may not be appropriate in certain settings (such as Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs), and put thems...
The Godfather Death is a story about choice and perception, how a man view the powers of the world, whether they were good, bad, or considered to be neutral.
Humans are environmentally and genetically predisposed to developing motivated addictive behavior. Addiction is a brain disease and a behavior disorder. All behaviors are choices. Choices that adolescences make at a young age directly affect the outcomes of their futures. Many factors contribute to an adolescence, becoming an addict or exhibiting drug seeking behavior.
