1. The Biblical story of the flood and Utnapishtim’s version of the flood are similar and different in several ways. Similarities include a god warns an individual about a flood and orders the individual to build a boat to escape the flood, pairs of each species are loaded into the boat, the flood kills every living thing that did not get on the boat, the use of birds to see if the flood is receding, the god smelling the sacrifice offered by the individual, the individual getting a blessing from a god after the flood, and the promise that another flood will not happen. Differences include the reason why the flood happened, the amount of days the flood occurred, the type of birds to see if there is land, and what kind of blessing that the individual
receives from a god. The most striking difference between them is the reason why the flood happened. In the biblical account, the flood is a punishment for human wickedness and corruption. God wanted to wipe out humanity, with an exception of Noah and his family. God is portrayed as a divine ruler who has absolute control. In Utnapishtim’s account, the gods start the flood because humans were too overloud and overpopulated the world. The gods are portrayed as more human because they rashly decide to flood the earth, punishing everyone. They later were deeply remorseful of their decision to wipe out humanity. 2. The purpose of the flood in Gilgamesh is to lower the population of humans because they were too loud for the gods. The purpose of the flood in the Hebrew Bible is to eliminate mankind, which grew evil and corrupt. The relationship between humans and the gods in Gilgamesh seemed to be linked closely. The gods continuously come into contact with humans when their actions make the gods angry. The gods also live close to the humans and are not all powerful. Also, the gods are humanlike because they are rash in making their decisions, like flooding the world. The relationship between humans and God in the Hebrew Bible seem to be more like a parent and child relationship. God waited patiently for humans to correct their corrupt behavior. When that did not happen, God gave a punishment to only the people who did wrong. Righteous people like Noah and his family were spared. God’s reason for the flood is carefully thought out unlike the gods in Gilgamesh.
Noah and Utnapishtim both were told to do something similar by their God or gods. The two differences that I noticed the most between these two texts include; the duration of the flood and the landing spot of the ark. In both the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bible a person is approached and told to abandon the possessions they have and to build an ark. Noah is approached by God and told to build an ark. Utnapishtim had a different experience. He was told of what to do through a dream that was caused by one of the gods. Another similarity is the way that Noah and Utnapishtim were told about the ark was that they both were given specific measurement of how to build the ark.
The Sumero-Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh, after two and a half millennia of dormancy, was resurrected by British archaeologists in the nineteenth century. Amid the rubble of an Assyrian palace, the twelve clay tablets inscribed the adventures of the first hero of world literature – King Gilgamesh, whose oral folk tales go back to at least 3000 years before Christ (Harris 1). The Epic of Gilgamesh records a story of a world-wide flood and pre-dates Genesis. So some claim that this invalidates the Genesis record. But P.J. Wiseman presents an interesting theory in this regard in his book Ancient Records and the Structure of Genesis (New York: Thomas Nelson, 1985).
Perhaps the most popular comparison with Noah's Flood is that of an ancient Babylonian story of a similar flood. A quick look at the text does show some key similarities between them however there are also some pointed differences. I will show you both and let you decide whether there is or is not a connection.
Flood myths help to explain events which cannot be controlled, such as natural disasters. The Hebrew flood myth tells of a man named Noah, who is selected, along with his family, to survive an epic flood. The flood must occur to cleanse the world of its impurities (Leeming, 47-53). The “flood” in Mabel’s own life involves the many things she loses: her mother, her family’s money, her idea of the future. However, these losses allow her to become a stronger person, to move away from merely being a daughter or a sister and become Mabel (Lawrence, 1-15).
Most of us have probably heard the famous bible story about Noah’s Ark and The Flood. What most may not know, is that this story is just one of a great many. A variety of ancient cultures, from the Greeks and the Middle East, to Asia and the Americas, have in their mythologies a story of a Great Flood that drowns the earth. These stories mostly contain the same themes: a god or group of gods becomes angry; they flood the earth but save a small group of people. These people build a boat to survive. After the flood they repopulate the earth.
The Biblical account in Genesis, probably written by Moses around 1500 B.C., and the story of creation and flood in Ovid's Metamorphosis, written somewhere between 8 and 17 A.D., have weathered the criticism and become the most famous. The Genesis account, however, may be the most prominent of the two accounts. Within these accounts, are many similarities, as well as differences, which make these two writings well respected, while holding their own in the literary world. Though both accounts of the creation and flood are well respected on their own, when compared side to side, they are drastically different.
For instance, there is a strong theme of regret in “Noah”. This is the apparent when God reveals his covenant with humanity. “Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.” This differs greatly from the “Fall” where God has no remorse for his creation and has no desire to help them at all. In addition to that there is another difference between the two stories. A good number of people know the famous story of the Genesis flood, but do they know how it resembles to the Gilgamesh flood story? It is mind bending how the main stories are so alike. The main theme is the biggest similarity between the two. They also differ greatly in the smaller details in the events that take place. In both stories the number of days for events are different, but the same basic event takes place. Along with many other similarities and differences. The flood story that is told in The Epic of Gilgamesh has the same principle as the story of Noah told in the book of Genesis in the Bible, but there are some major differences. In the epic, Utnapishtim is immortal and, although Noah was extremely old when he died, he wasn’t immortal. Utnapishtim was a human, but because he saved mankind, Enlil said, “Hitherto Utnapishtim has been a human, now Utnapishtim and his wife shall become like us gods.” (Gilgamesh 11.206-207) In the Biblical story, God told Noah that he was going to send a flood and asked him specifically to make the ark in order to save mankind. In Genesis 6:13-22, God tells Noah why he’s flooding the earth and exact instructions to build the ark. “13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. The roles of Noah and Utnapishtim in the Flood Myths are quite similar. There are several differences regarding the two flood myths, but the general idea behind the two remains consistent. In the Mesopotamian Flood Myth, the Gods were overwhelmed by the amount of humans that existed on Earth and were unable to sleep due to the noise of men. So they decided to "exterminate mankind." While in the Hebrew story of Noah and the Flood Myth, God grew tired of the evil that had plagued mankind and engulfed the earth. So God decided to start the world over to undue the mistakes of man. Both of these stories display an attempt by the Gods to start the world over to cleanse the earth. Both Utnapishtim and Noah were spoken to by Gods and asked to build large boats from which all who were to be spared would seek shelter during the storm. Both men were allowed to spare the lives of their family via the safety of the boats. Also, the method used by the Gods in these myths are the same, the skies would rain down upon the earth flooding the land and killing all who were not ordered onto the boats.

Here Ea expresses that famine, plagues etc, would have been a much more fitting punishment as killing some people would be more fitting, instead of destroying all of humanity. Enlil listened and understood, this is where he took Utnapishtim and his wife by the hands and granted them eternal life.
In the story of Genesis, God first created many things including human beings. However, as the population increased, God sees evil in human. His attitude toward the human race changed. He was sorry for the wickedness from the human beings. The humans are so wicked and evil that "It repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart" (Gen. 6:6) The idea of the flood came up because he did not want any of the evil people living in the world he created.
