“Noah and the Ark” is a story of one good man in a world full of evil. “The Fall of Man”, however, is about how evil started. Although both stories are explanations of different aspects of good and evil, they are both a part of the same story; God is angry at the evil in the world and destroys it but keeps the goodness. However “Noah” contains more positive symbols and themes than “The Fall.” God is a central theme in both of them.
In both “Noah” and “The Fall” there use many prominent symbols, like God. In “Noah” God destroyed the evil in the world and keeps the goodness by sending a flood to kill everything that wasn’t good. “Every living thing that moved on the earth perished - Birds, livestock, wild animals, all creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.” This is very similar to what happened in the “Fall” when God banished Adam and Eve, the evil, from the garden of Eden. “So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken”. For instance, there is a strong theme of regret in “Noah”. This is the apparent when God reveals his covenant with humanity. “Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.” This differs greatly from the “Fall” where God has no remorse for his creation and has no desire to help them at all. In addition to that there is another difference between the two stories. In the “Fall” there is the theme of manipulation, where in “Noah” there is on such presences of this. “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” Looking back on the stories, I interpret them as trying to prove the exact same point but only using different themes in order to do
Noah and Utnapishtim both were told to do something similar by their God or gods. The two differences that I noticed the most between these two texts include; the duration of the flood and the landing spot of the ark. In both the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Bible a person is approached and told to abandon the possessions they have and to build an ark. Noah is approached by God and told to build an ark. Utnapishtim had a different experience. He was told of what to do through a dream that was caused by one of the gods. Another similarity is the way that Noah and Utnapishtim were told about the ark was that they both were given specific measurement of how to build the ark.
The plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark has many notable themes throughout: religion, exploration, transformation, wisdom & knowledge, politics, and good vs. evil. Of these, one of the most prominent themes throughout is that of good vs. evil. In Raiders of the Lost Ark any character who stays in the movie either ends up on the good side (with Indiana Jones) or the bad side (with the Nazis). There is no in between. What makes this movie so unique is how close the bad guys actually come to achieving their goal of using the Ark for its powers. Symbolism is very prominent over the course of this story, giving it that much more meaning. Knowles makes not only one, but several instances to religious principles and more precisely in this case, Adam and Eve. These of jealousy, greed, and selfishness are prominent throughout both stories as well is a significant fall whether it would be as monstrous as humanity or on the smaller scale of relationships. The disruption of peace and harmony are also evident in the two. In addition, it is interesting how the author finds a way to tie them all into each other.
Man’s sin became so unbearable to God that he finally decided to get rid of humanity through a Flood. As the sole survivors of the Flood, Noah and his family mark the transition from the Adamic Age to the current age.
Creation myths, cosmogonies, explain the beginnings of the universe. The book of Genesis, the Hebrew story of creation, tells of a supreme being who brings light unto the darkness, moves the waters from the land, and gives life (Leeming, 24-25). Mabel, the main character in “The Odor of Chrysanthemums”, finally begins to live her own life after being rescued from dark, murky water by a man who can give her everything she needs (Lawrence, 9-10). Flood myths help to explain events which cannot be controlled, such as natural disasters. The Hebrew flood myth tells of a man named Noah, who is selected, along with his family, to survive an epic flood.
Both stories tell of a creator who makes the earth and the elements of the earth like trees, rivers and animals. The Hebrew and the Potawatomi stories also share how humans are breathed into life by their creator. There is a definite relationship being sought from the creators with the humans he creates. Based on the descriptions in both stories and how they are told there is also a respect for their elders and how the stories are passed down through the generations. Also, in both stories humans are made from the clay of the earth by their creators. An interesting difference in the stories is women only being mentioned in the Hebrew story and creating conflict, where no women are mentioned directly in the Potawatomi story. Also, in the Potawatomi story they make sure you know the difference between the white, black and red people created. The red people are specifically pointed out to be “just right” insinuating the white and black are somehow inferior (discrimination). An interesting part of both stories is how they explain how the world and humans are created by a superior being. Some of the simpler similarities are that the extent of the flood reaches every part of the earth, the flood is intended to destroy mankind, aside from the heros and their families, Utnapishtim and Noah are found righteous by their God or gods, and they build an ark to certain qualifications. An example of a less obvious similarity is the location of where the arks first touche land. In the general sense, they both landed on a mountain: Noah’s “ ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventh day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat” (Genesis 75) and Utnapishtim's “boat stuck fast beside Mt. Nimush” (Gilgamesh 57). Taking this information a Step deeper reveals that Mt. Ararat and Mt. Nimush are about 300 miles apart. Both boats land in a relatively close proximity. Further proving the idea that the Sumerians and Hebrews experience the same event. Utnapishtim’s and Noah’s lives are dramatically changed by the flood. They sacrifice all that is familiar to them in order to receive the blessings of God or the gods. The heroes are both examples of a term I will call the archetypal path of blessing. Utnapishtim and Noah are both comfortable with what they have before the flood, but as Christopher Columbus States “One can never cross the ocean until one has the courage to leave the shore.” Utnapishtim and Noah give up what is ordinary to receive what is great. In the beginning of the Creation Story it is stated in the first few lines “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” God then began to create the Earth in seven days. On the first day he created day and night out of the darkness and light. The second day led to the creation of the sky. The third day was the creation of the land. John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden was inspired by a message he wished to send to his sons. Steinbeck created this epic story to carry his voice and advice to the two young boys whom he loved immensely. He wrote the story of good and evil, including love and hate, demonstrating how they are inseparable. ("East of Eden", Kirjasto) Steinbeck wanted to describe to Thom and John IV, the Salinas Valley, the treasured place in which he grew up. He aspired to detail every element from sights and sounds to colors and smells. He placed East of Eden here, in the Salinas Valley, not because of its significance to the story but the importance intended for his sons. East of Eden tells of a boy becoming a man as he overcomes jealousy and realizes self worth; this being achieved by the realization that everyone possesses good and evil. A quote from Steinbeck himself expresses the desire he had to instill this in the lives of his sons, "this is for my sons" to read when they are grown...And so I will tell one of the greatest-The story of good and evil, of strength and weakness, of love and hate, of beauty and ugliness." In the story of Utnapishtim, the Boat he built was finished on the seventh day. Also the rain that flooded the earth, stopped on the seventh day. In the Hebrew story of Noah, the waters of the flood were upon the earth seven days after Noah constructed the arc. After the earth was flooded and the rain subsided, during two seven day instances, Noah sent forth a dove to determine if dry land existed nearby. The two stories also showed that the Gods gave specific instructions down to the dimension regarding the construction of the two boats and both men were ordered to keep the blood line of animals alive by sparing the lives of a male a female being of each species.
