As I discovered, many cities in the world were located by the waterway or near the waterway, for instance, Melbourne, Sydney and London. In city planning, waterway, as one of the significant elements is worth considering. To define what waterway is, waterway is a river, canal, or other route for travel by water. Thus, waterway can mean natural river or artificial water canal. In this essay, waterway as river and water system will be discussed. However, sanitation issue is a frequent topic relating to a waterway. The aim of this essay is to discuss the similarities and differences between London and Melbourne by means of exploring the association of waterway and sanitation and how this issue relates to city planning.

As a part of the British Commonwealth bloodline, Melbourne owns a large amount of Victorian style architecture, which is the same architecture style existing in London. To build or give birth to a city, Romans made a system of planning the city, which is called the Roman “grid plan.” Due to the British influence, Melbourne’s city plan (Figure 2) is a typical Roman grid, which divides the city into several rectangles. After building the freeways in late 20th century, the freeways and pollutions had become bigger threats to the Yarra River because the Yarra River needed to bear the chemical sewage and some human sewage from the city, which Melbourne already stopped to do that over fifty years ago. Soon after, the pollution of the Yarra River became an issue of public concern. Due to the difficulties that the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works failed to stop the polluting, the government asked the Environmental Protection Agency to control the pollution and promised to bring back a clean river. Ironically, the Yarra River is never clean that can please the city. However, the “uneasy relationship” between the Yarra River and Melbourne has eased off in last couple years.
