Comparing John Cheever’s The Swimmer and The Five-Forty-Eight
Two stories by John Cheever, The Swimmer and The Five-Forty-Eight (5-48), will be explored in terms of how the characters, genre and point of view in these stories give rise to classic fiction.
The Swimmer is of a suburban man, Neddy Merrill, who decides to return home from work by swimming eight miles through all of his neighbors' pools along the way. At each pool he encounters a former mistress, distant and unfriendly neighbours and other symbols of a bitter, frustrated life. To Neddy, this is his epic day's journey. However, when he arrives home, his family has left him. The swimmer has made it home; but too much has changed.
While 5-48 is about the protagonist, Blake, having an affair with the emotionally weak Dent. The story begins with Blake firing Dent and she in turn stalks him to the 5-48 with a gun. She gains her revenge by making him kneel before her. Blake’s humiliation is complete when she forces him to rub his face in the dirt.
5-48 is developed as a typical story with the two principal characters, Blake and Dent, very well developed. There is constant tension from the point where Blake (depicted as egotistical, insensitive and in control) leaves the office to the train 5-48, all the while being pursued by Dent (the victim, who is emotionally weak, manipulated and cheated). Its chronological form simplifies the story and makes it a fast paced and delightful read. In addition, there is realism injected by actual places like the 5-48 train and Shady Hill, tired and cold relationships, betrayal, revenge and affairs that are so commonplace in society.

In retrospect after analyzing Cheever’s The Swimmer and The Five-Forty-Eight, I think that isolation stands out as the underlying theme for both stories although they are markedly different in plot and genre. Also these stories seem to be a poignant reminder of Cheever’s personal life and to an extent a chapter of life in that period, although poverty, discrimination and adultery are still present today and affect both you and me.

In the short story The Swimmer by John Cheever, one of the dominant themes is the passage of time. In this short story time seems to pass as reality does with us unaware of its passing. The main character is the protagonist hero, Neddy Merrill who embarks on a traditional theme of a homeward journey. King John was born on the 24th of December in the year of 1167 to King Henry II and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine. John was the youngest of five sons to his father, and had been nicknamed “Lackland” by Henry as all of his elder brothers had received a certain share of dominion apart from John alone, however, John seemed to be his father’s favourite. In 1173, a marriage proposal was set up by Henry for his beloved youngest son to Humbert III’s daughter, meaning that John will have the right to a lot of lands but sadly, the wedding didn’t happen. His brothers did not seem very fond of that idea and they rebelled.
John Cheever does not merely state the theme of his story, he expresses his theme, as a good writer should, in a variety of metaphors and analogies coupled with powerful imagery. In The Swimmer, Cheever writes and underscores his primary theme of alcoholism in many ways, such as his use of autumnal imagery and the color green. However, there is also some very prominent symbolism and allusions that serve to highlight the theme while also augmenting the artistic and poetic nature of the story. One very important use of symbolism is in the “perverted sacraments” as originally pointed out by Hal Blythe in 1984. Along side these symbols, Hal Blythe, along with Charlie Sweet, later discovered a clear allusion to Ponce de Leòn in 1989.

Kurt Vonnegut uses a combination of dark humor and irony in Slaughterhouse-Five. As a result, the novel enables the reader to realize the horrors of war while simultaneously laughing at some of the absurd situations it can generate. Mostly, Vonnegut wants the reader to recognize the fact that one has to accept things as they happen because no one can change the inevitable.

“Slaughterhouse-Five” is an anti-war novel. It describes a flesh-and-blood world. Main character is Billy Pilgrim, he is a time traveler in this book, his first name Billy is from the greatest novelist in the USA in 19 century’s novel “Billy Budd” ; and his last name is from “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. Differently, the main character in “The Pilgrim’s Progress” ’s traveling has meaning and discovering, Billy Pilgrim’s traveling just has violence and escape. In the novel “Slaughterhouse-Five” by Kurt Vonnegut ’s main character, Billy Pilgrim is sane and his time travel is half in his mind half is real. He is looked so innocent and weakness, there is a sentence which is spoken by Billy Pilgrim “So it goes.” (2) This quotation shows that a poignant sense of helplessness.

Communication can be defined as ‘imparting or exchanging information by speaking, writing or through another medium’ (Stevenson A, 2010). It is part of everyday human interaction and involves the exchange of information between two or more people. The Transactional model of communication reflects what happens in everyday communication situations, whereby people act as the sender and receiver. It shows communication as an ongoing process and each person communicating will react differently depending on the environment, their personal experience, culture, self-esteem and attitude (Butland M, 2012). Verbal communication is conveying information through words by either writing or speaking and includes tone and volume of voice. Non-verbal communication is the use of body language such as gestures, facial expressions, posture, appearance and active listening to relay information to another person. Mehrabian (1971) states that 55% of communication is non-verbal, 7% is verbal and 38% is vocal (i.e. relating to tone of voice and sounds). This suggests that other than visual body language, listening and vocal expressions are also an important part of communication (Dunhill A, Elliott B and Shaw A, 2009).

Nonverbal communication is communicating with other people without using any words whether they are written or spoken words (Ruesch & Kees, 1956). Anything nonverbal we do such as eye contact, facial expressions, touching, gestures, body movements, posture, general appearance and dress, our voice tone and smell send strong messages; it doesn’t matter if we were speaking or if we were being completely silent (Segal, Smith, Boose, Jaffe, n. d., para. 2). Usually when you are talking to a person, the person uses all five senses to receive your interaction with him: 83% sight, 11% hearing, 3% smell, 2% touch and 1% taste (The Definitive Book of Body Language, 2004). As Mark Twain said, “Actions speak louder than words” and what that quote basically means is that your behavior and actions count more than the words you are saying. Nonverbal communication speaks more than the words you say so you can say whatever you want to say but it is the nonverbal things like your tone and facial expression that tells what you really mean. Nonverbal communication is important because it tells you what the words do not tell; feelings, mood etc. (Lynn, 2012).
Nonverbal communication surrounds us all the time. “Nonverbal communication is all aspects of communication other than words” (Wood, 2016, p. 135). It is not communication with words, but we use nonverbal communication when we talk. We use nonverbal communication without even realizing it in every facet of our lives. This type of communication can be challenging depending on someone’s culture. Something that means one thing in America, can mean something totally different in another country. It is important to know this so that you don’t offend someone from another culture (Wood, 2016, p. 149).
