The way that society initially perceives others cannot be changed unless those viewing them are willing to look beyond preliminary predispositions. The presuppositions of the people that surround us can create baseless assumptions about a person's character, in doing so it can perpetuate harmful stereotypes and lead to unjustified mistreatment. I will be exploring these topics in both Madea by Euripides and Raymond Carver's Cathedral. Both pieces of literature share both close similarities and significant differences by exploring personal and societal assumptions based on first impressions, how the characters interacted with themselves and others, and how they progressed in their mentalities as the story continued. This blind man was late forties, a heavy-set, balding man with stooped shoulders, as if he carried a great weight there. Despite the narrator's initial trepidation towards the blind man, as the story progressed his initial presuppositions began to shift as the two spent more time together. As a result of his observations, the narrator's perspective on blindness and blind people changed as well. By seeing how the blind man interacted with the space around him, he contradicted his preconceived notions surrounding the capabilities of those who are blind. In doing so, the narrator could see the man with a more open mind. So we kept on with it. His fingers rode my fingers as my hand went over the paper. It was like nothing else in my life up to now.
