In the two poems, Acquainted with the Night by Robert Frost and We Grow Accustomed to the Dark by Emily Dickinson, the authors analyze the significance of dark and night differently by using first person point of view, vivid imagery, and different syntax to symbolize hardships and loneliness. As Robert Frost discuss the night with his hardships, Emily Dickinson compares the imagery of darkness to a hardship.
In Dickinson’s poem, the imagery of darkness is used to represent her sad situation. The poem starts with a first person perspective by “We grow accustomed to the Dark, When Light is put away...” as Dickinson is explaining a group of people and herself is going from lightness to darkness and having to adjust to the differences. The following line “ As when the Neighbor holds the Lamp” symbolize that there was someone out there with a “brighter” idea or mind that can help the group of people find their way through. She uses the vivid imagery of a person nearby holding a lamp to symbolize that something bright is coming their way to lead their path. Dickinson ends with “ Either the darkness alters, or something in the sight” tells the reader that the group realize that there is nothing to worry about and everything will fall into place at the end. Robert Frost compares his loneliness to the night. He first begins with “I have walked out in rain- and back in rain”.
