Where are the best places to get ice cream in the Quad Cities? Easy; Whitey’s or Tastee Freez. Both are staples in the Quad Cities, places where everyone has been. Whitey’s has been in the Quad Cities the longest, founded in Moline in 1933, while Tastee Freez opened its doors in Davenport in 1954. Whitey’s and Tastee Freez have many differences in their venues, food choice, price, and experience. When driving up to either ice cream parlor, there is a distinct difference. Pulling up to Tastee Freez feels like entering a time warp to the 50’s. Having an outdoor shop is very unique in the Quad Cities, especially compared to Whitey’s. Due to Tastee Freez having an outdoor store, they are only open seasonally, while Whitey’s is open all year round. With three locations in Davenport, Whitey’s is very easy to come across, while only available in the Quad Cities. In contrast, getting to Tastee Freez can be a hassle because there is only one store in the Quad Cities, and it’s not in a very convenient location. Even so, they do have locations all around the country, including Vermont, Florida, California, and even Alaska. Whitey’s serves scooped, hard serve ice cream, while Tastee Freez is known for their original soft serve. Also, Tastee Freez is more than just a ice cream parlor; it is a fast food joint. They offer not only ice cream, but hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, and a variety of sides for every appetite. Although Whitey’s only serves cold dishes, they have many more flavors than Tastee Freez, including marshmallow sundaes, tin roof malts, and pina colada shakes. They also have frozen yogurt, smoothies, and they even serve packaged ice cream in local grocery
stores. While Whitey’s may have more of an ice cream selection than Tastee Freez, they also have a bigger price tag. A small cone at Tastee Freez is priced at $1.29, while a one-dip cone at Whitey’s is priced at $2.39. While the price may be higher, it is most definitely worth it to have the experience. It is tradition in the Quad Cities to bring visitors from around the country to Whitey’s while they are in town. As for Tastee Freez, it has always been a west end tradition. Summer nights are spent walking down there, eating a tenderloin, cheese curds, and chocolate shake, sitting at a picnic table outside the store, and chatting with your friends until the sun goes down. Whitey’s and Tastee Freez have been around the Quad Cities for decades, and the people can’t get enough. No matter what the store looks like, what kind of food they serve, or how expensive they are, Quad Cities patrons are going to love it. The two shops being different is what makes them perfect. Go to Tastee Freez for a burger and sundae, reasonable prices, and a hometown feel. Go to Whitey’s for a cold treat, interesting flavors, and friendly faces. No matter where you go, you are gonna have a good time and a happy stomach.

Why would anyone feel the need to write an entire book on such a mundane topic such as sugar? Look around at some food products you might have and you will realize that many if not all of them contain sugar in some form or another. For example, a can of soda, which most people drink everyday, contains (depending on the brand) approximately 40 grams of sugars. Look further and you might find that even things such as cheese or chips or soup contain several grams of sugar in them. The wide diversification of products that contain sugar just goes to show you how widespread the use of sugar really is. This fact alone could be enough to convince someone to create a book solely about sugar. One passage that Mintz quotes on page 15 that really seems to capture our (Westerners) infatuation with sugar, and a strong reason the book at hand is as follows:
