Chaya and Cole are fighting for their lives against harsh climate and society. In Touching Spirit Bear and The Devil’s Arithmetic, their characters face the same conflicts in different times and places. While Touching Spirit Bear and The Devil’s Arithmetic both have similar themes centered on survival the characters learn and develop in different ways. Chaya and Cole have to survive on an island in the harsh winters of Alaska. He had to survive by using materials around him on the island. Chaya had to survive in a camp during the cold winters of Germany. She had to fight for her life against the weather and the Nazis. Chaya and Cole both had to survive similar things, the weather, nature, and society. Although Chaya and Cole are in different
“Another source of greatness is difficulty. When any work seems to have required immense force and labour to effect it, the idea is grand” (Edmund Burke). We may not enjoy tremendous obstacles while we’re experiencing them, but when they’re over, we can definitely see the benefits. In Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, the protagonist, Cole, has had to face many obstacles in his life, such as his abusive father, his neglectful mother and his anger. Many people can relate to Cole because they, too, have had many obstacles in their life. Overcoming obstacles makes Cole more empathetic and emotionally stable. Empathy is important because it is what allows humans to be human. Being mentally
Touching Spirit Bear (Continued) Finally it was time to go home. Cole had dreamed of this day many times, that dreadful day that he would have to fit back in to the world. “I can’t wait till I get to see mom again” Cole said “But I am not looking forward to try to fit back in”
I am reading Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen. I have enjoyed reading the book so far. The book is about a boy named Cole whose parents have not treated him very well, so he makes poor decisions. One of the decisions he made was beating up a boy at school to the point where he was bleeding and helpless. This decision that he made caused him to either be tried as an adult at court, or to be part of the circle of justice program, which would require him to be by himslef on an island and he would have to fend for himself and this would hopefully get him to be in touch with his inner peace. When cole got to the island he was not positive about it at all. It stated “Cole felt his anger
In “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” by Anne Fadiman, the whole story revolves around Lia, the thirteenth child of Lee family. Lee family was a refugee family in USA and Lia was their first child to be born in US. At the time of time of birth, she was declared as a healthy child but at the age of three it was founded that she is suffering from epilepsy. In the words of western or scientific world the term epilepsy mean mental disorder of a person and in Hmong culture, epilepsy is referred to as qaug dab peg (translated in English, "the spirit catches you and you fall down"), in which epileptic attacks are perceived as evidence of the epileptic's ability to enter and journey momentarily into the spirit realm (Wikipedia, 2014)
A transcendentalist values the natural world compared to the obsession of the synthetic values of those before them. Among the well respected Transcendentalists are Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Washington Irving, and Henry David Thoreau. A common dream world consists of simplicity, admiration, and individualism, and there hasn’t been a clear line drawn regarding the connection between transcendentalism and utopian thinking. A future ‘utopia’ should be founded on transcendentalist philosophies in order to restore the value of nature and one's own individual spirit, due to the qualities shared by a 21st century ‘utopia’ and transcendental ideas.
Frankenstein 's Fallen Angel is a story about how victor is a doppelganger of his creation, the monster. The monster is a representation of who Victor is, throughout the book you can see how Victor and the monster are similar and how the differences don’t seem that different the more you read. “Remember that I am thy creature; I ought to be thy Adam, but I am rather the fallen angel, whom thou drivest from joy for no misdeed.” These lines refer to the Biblical story of Adam and also Milton 's Paradise Lost.
An example of survival can be found in the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The town’s people were scared of this unknown creature and were afraid for their lives. In an act of survival, they hunted the beast down in a full town riot. Lucy, John, and Van Helsing hold a significant part in the novel as far as surviving goes. Even though they shared more than others, their survival skills left a significant impact on the
When comparing Ghost of Spirit Bear and Touching Spirit Bear the books are both similar and different in many ways. In Touching Spirit Bear, the theme is whatever you do to someone or something you do to yourself. This statement is correct because the book says "Edwin tightened his grip as if in warning. 'Whatever you do to the animals, you do to yourself. Remember that'"(Mikaelsen 18). After hearing this statement and attacking the Spirit Bear, Cole realizes what Edwin says is true. From then on, he began to change and then knew how to help Peter.
E.M. Bounds wrote a wonderful book devoted to prayer entitled Power Through Prayer. This book encourages the preacher to become a true prayer warrior. E.M. Bounds has written many books on prayer, encouraging Christians to devote their life to prayer. Since the writer is coming from a preacher background himself, one can clearly see the passion he has for prayer in his life. Fellow preachers will hopefully be encouraged by this and want to devote their life to prayer, so that they will better their preaching. Bounds exemplifies through his work that preaching has no power without prayer. He also sets forth the idea that prayer is the life-giving force behind our work for God. In reading this book, it inspires one to pray more and be able to be more effective in their ministry.
Both protagonist are aided by someone who motivates and inspire them to be great by do things they thought themselves incapable of doing. For instance, Phillip becomes friends with a black man and climbing a coconut tree while blind. Mayo deciding to stay and protect his home. Timothy and Lurhetta play a big role in shaping the novels’ plot because they show the main characters that racial biases are irrelevant in their current time and situation. The two novels are symbolic of man’s fight against nature. In Phillips and Timothy’s case it is the struggle to live on the cay and survive a massive hurricane while the Higgins face losing their home to landslides. Besides race the novels also share themes of family, friendship, love and coming of age.
How can two people in different excerpts, survive in harsh weather, bad conditions, or hunger? Well these two people used their bravery, patience, and most important for all human beings is intelligence. Anyone can survive on extreme environments especially Pi and Keesh who can believe they can survive and think what they’re about to do.
So what does all this mean? To use as an analogy, let’s take a boxer for example. He is going to train for the upcoming fight. He is going to study his opponent, watch his moves, look for his weak points, and practice his own technique, because he seems to know what he is up against. He is going to train, train, train and train some more.
They both become immersed in nature to some extent, traveling alone for the majority of the adventure but meeting many people along the way. Cheryl’s inner pain is much different from McCandless’. Cheryl’s conflict was caused by the death of her mother and the separation of the family that was her support system. McCandless’ conflict is caused by his realization that society is not the most just and moral thing, and that causes his to feel unrest with in it. He also felt that “humans had devolved into progressively inferior beings". (74) Even though both these characters had very different inner conflicts, they both turned to the same solution: extracting themselves from society for a period of time. Another main difference between the two stories is the outcome. Cheryl returned to society after her problem was solved while McCandless died of starvation before he could return. Cheryl chose a less treacherous way to connect with nature and disconnect herself from society for at least the majority of the hike. She over packed her backpack, and made sure she had all the items she needed before beginning the PCT. She also mailed herself packages filled with more supplies to each town she would be passing through so she would not run out of items. McCandless on the other
H. There are many “survival stories” out there, often retold by those who lived through them, however accounts of survival are very different depending on the person and their perspective. B. Three stories that show this when compared to each other are “Trapped” retold by Aron Ralston, “My Escape from North Korea” retold by Hyeonseo Lee, and “Life of Pi” a fictional story by Yann Martel. Trapped is about a climber who gets trapped in a canyon for five days, and can only get out by amputating his arm. My Escape from North Korea is about a girl who helps her family flee famine while facing the challenges of being illegal immigrants. Life of Pi is a tale about a boy who is stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean and survives for weeks on end.
Question: Compare / Contrast the characterization of Satan/the Devil as he appears in the excerpts we’ve read of the Bible vs. the characterization of Satan as he appears in Book IV of Paradise Lost.
