The Importance of Overcoming Obstacles
“Another source of greatness is difficulty. When any work seems to have required immense force and labour to effect it, the idea is grand” (Edmund Burke). We may not enjoy tremendous obstacles while we’re experiencing them, but when they’re over, we can definitely see the benefits. In Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, the protagonist, Cole, has had to face many obstacles in his life, such as his abusive father, his neglectful mother and his anger. Many people can relate to Cole because they, too, have had many obstacles in their life. Overcoming obstacles makes Cole more empathetic and emotionally stable. Empathy is important because it is what allows humans to be human. Being mentally
stable is important because then we aren’t a danger to society and ourselves. Overcoming obstacles is important because they make people more empathetic and emotionally stable. Overcoming obstacles is important for Cole because it makes him more empathetic. Individuals who overcome difficulties seem to relate more to other individuals. The first time that Cole saw Peter since the incident at school, Cole realized that he had changed Peter. Peter was mean and angry as Cole used to be. Cole can empathize with Peter because Cole knows what it is like to be angry all the time. Cole and Peter share similar obstacles, such as their anger, which gives them the ability to empathize with one another . Individuals who can empathize with their family seem to have a stronger family bond. Cole also gains empathy for his mother. Cole and his mother went through a difficult time in their lives when they were being abused by Cole’s father. Again, Cole and his mother share similar obstacles, which give them the ability to empathize with one another. Before, Cole couldn’t empathize with his mother because he was angry at her. Her neglectful ways had turned Cole against her. Once Cole got mauled by the spirit bear, he realized that life is short and family is important, so he forgave his mother. As a result of Cole’s forgiveness, he was finally able to empathize with his mother.
This book is Touching Spirit Bear By Ben Mikaelsen. Touching Spirit Bear is about a 15 year old boy who has been abused and is into crime. The books starts right before he beats up a kid. He then goes to circle justice and is sent to an island to change his ways then he almost dies and goes back later and wants to get rid of his anger problem and change. In the book there is three types of conflict Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, and Man vs Self. In the beginning Cole beat up a kid named Peter and Cole then had to try to heal himself by learning how to forgive, get over his anger ,and learn to have a clean mind.
After reading the story, Touching Spirit Bear, I learned that the main character, Cole Matthews, is a stubborn, ill-tempered, bully that enjoys watching others suffer and or go through pain. Infact, it is is stubborn, ill-tempered, bullying ways that lands him in his very own jail cell at the age of fifteen. “He was an innocent-looking, baby-faced fifteen-year-old from Minneapolis who had been in trouble with the law half his life.” (pg. 5 Touching Spirit Bear) This piece of information is very important because this leads up to his proper punishment, but if I am correct that quote states that he has been in trouble with the law since he was seven and a half. Finally at the age of fifteen they figured out how to get through
I am reading Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen. I have enjoyed reading the book so far. The book is about a boy named Cole whose parents have not treated him very well, so he makes poor decisions. One of the decisions he made was beating up a boy at school to the point where he was bleeding and helpless. This decision that he made caused him to either be tried as an adult at court, or to be part of the circle of justice program, which would require him to be by himslef on an island and he would have to fend for himself and this would hopefully get him to be in touch with his inner peace. When cole got to the island he was not positive about it at all. It stated “Cole felt his anger
There is a old time saying that “you will never know what true happiness feels like until you have felt pain”. In order to reach where you are going in life you have to go through hardship and pain to find your inner contentment. Often times, people who have too much in life always takes it for granted ,because all they have is pleasure and not knowing the feelings of pain and being without. Martha C. Nussbaum author of “who is the happy warrior” states that you have to go through pain to find the true meaning of happiness while Daniel M.Haybron author of “Happiness and Its Discontents” states that pain doesn 't bring happiness, happiness is just a thing you feel when you think you may have enough. To find happiness you have to go through the unbearable process of life.
In Empathy, Stephen Dunn, who went to war to fight for his country. When he was on the leave from the army, he felt that it was the beginning of empathy for himself. In Too Much Happiness, Alice Munro learns about the significance of the relationship between a young mathematician named Sophia and her professor. The professor admits that one of his self-interest was for a student to challenge him completely, who is not only capable of following the rules of his own mind but to open up his mind. The interplay between empathy and self-interest is that they both effect on each other in many ways, such as, we benefit as a whole from selfless self-interest and caring for others more than we would from the survival of one at the cost of everyone else.
When individuals face obstacles in life, there is often two ways to respond to those hardships: some people choose to escape from the reality and live in an illusive world. Others choose to fight against the adversities and find a solution to solve the problems. These two ways may lead the individuals to a whole new perception. Those people who decide to escape may find themselves trapped into a worse or even disastrous situation and eventually lose all of their perceptions and hops to the world, and those who choose to fight against the obstacles may find themselves a good solution to the tragic world and turn their hopelessness into hopes. Margaret Laurence in her short story Horses of the Night discusses the idea of how individual’s responses
Most people do not actively seek out adversity, yet few can escape encountering adversity in the form of hardships and afflictions. Two people who faced great adversity in their lives were Martin Luther King Jr. and my father Brent Vickery. These men both faced adversity in different degrees and at different times and places within the United States, but what makes them similar is that their strength of character allowed them to face adversity boldly.
“Life puts obstacles in one’s way for a reason, so you can’t give up when there comes one you can’t fight through.” This quote was once said by a great grandpa to his granddaughter. The main point of the quote is that life is full of challenges and one has to find a way to move around it or defeat it. Kaye Gibbons, an outstanding author, suffers from a disorder call bipolarity. Even though the creative, thinking outside the box, and intelligent author fought through many obstacles throughout her life she still managed to never give up, accomplish her goals, and make the best out of her disorder.
Going through life, people pursue various endeavours in the hopes of achieving happiness or contentment. These goals and dreams are all driven to pursue some form of wellbeing, whether it is of basic needs and necessities or a more personal goal such as love or success. In some cases, an individual may find that the endings of these endeavours are not what they expected; some may even call them failures. These unfortunate endings leave the individual feeling lonely and isolated, as if not a single being in the world may understand them. A famous author by the name of Lemony Snicket once wrote that “[when one experiences such emotions], the best thing to do in these circumstances is to wake somebody else up, so that they can feel this way, too.” However, as humorous this quote may be, Lemony Snicket’s main objective is to show the value of the ability to understand and comprehend one another’s feelings. This characteristic, otherwise known as empathy, separates humanity from the rest of the animal kingdom in that individuals have the ability to understand and perceive certain
A person’s character is developed by the surroundings around them as well as their experiences. The Roman poet Horace quotes “…Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents in which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant…” I agree with the Roman poet, Horace, in that adversity has a way of waking talent from slumber. Adversity can encourage people in ways success and wealth cannot, as there is a benefit in the hardship. In Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, as well as Macbeth, by Shakespeare, adversity has developed the characters. From my observation, I strongly agree that experiences, such as hardship and danger, shape a person.
Every man is born with either a silver spoon in his mouth or a shovel in his hand. If the former is the case, that individual can look forward to a life of relative ease and privilege. If it is the latter, however, the person had best prepare himself to dig through the pile of misfortune life is going to heap upon him. This is the balance of life--that for every man born under a shining sun, there is at least one born under ominous gray thunderclouds. Those individuals who have a natural inclination towards hard times do have a certain advantage, however, over those who always seem to have it easy. True adversity gives birth to a strength of character that those who avoid it can never hope to attain, understand, or even recognize.
Adversity affects people’s characters and personalities every day. Although adversity may not affect everyone, an abundance of individuals are affected every day. I have faced adversity in my life. Ever since I was little I have been playing soccer, and every day I have been trying to get better and better. My sister plays soccer as well and I have been compared to her my whole life. Being compared has changed me into a more hard-working individual and made me a better person as a whole. See, adversity does not always change people for the worse. Sometimes, like in my case, it can coerce people into becoming stronger. Adversity shapes a person’s character through displaying different forms, altering individuals for better or worse, and encircling
According to Brooks (2014), people seek happiness but indirectly obtain several tests that affects their emotions in many ways. Indeed, when people are is questioned about their past, memories coming back to her mind are often the most important positively as negatively. A positive event can be the birth of a child, success. In contrast, a negative event is often links to death, failure, a dismissal, and so on. Suffering or pain also gives us an outside perspective. Without a doubt, suffering makes us human we like it or not. For example, when a friend tells that she has failed an exam and we realize that we could get it easily, it is hard to understand exactly her emotion because we have never been in the situation. But when the same situation arises and you become the concerned, you understand the effect that this failure may have on you emotionally. In this sense, we understand that suffering makes people human because it helps them to be connected to a situation already happened before or which could happen in the future.
The Discipline section of M. Scott Peck’s The Road Less Traveled first deals with life’s difficulties. He makes it clear that we all have problems and pain but we have to deal with it to get by and to make life less difficult. "Life is difficult... Once we truly know that life is difficult--once we truly understand and accept it--then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters."(p.15)
In relation to this essay then finding ways to empathize with others is customary. There is a marked difference between empathy and sympathy. Empathy is defined as the ability to share and understand another’s experiences, emotions, and feelings (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Whereas sympathy is defined as caring and compassion for another person’s struggles (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). As a wounded healer I have both empathy and sympathy for others but due to my life experiences, it is my empathy for others that allows me to connect with them on a deeper level. The significance of being a wounded healer in this type of relationship, a practitioner-patient relationship, is that it is what makes the practitioner an equal to his or her patient rather than his or her “master” according to a journal article listed on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website (Daneault, 2008). This type of relationship can encourage and inspire the patient to begin to heal themselves where
