The two short stories I chose to compare and contrast are “The Secret Lion” by Alberto Alvaro Rios and “The Man in the Well” by Ira Sher. While reading the two short stories; I realized that they differ from each other in certain ways, but they also have similar characteristics. For example, both short sorties were written in first person point of view. However, “The Secret Lion” contains symbolism, and we can not find symbolism on “The Man in the Well”. In “The Secret Lion” the author has a strong example of symbolism. Rios used objects and places to describe each feeling of the narrator and his friend (Sergio) for the changes in their life as teenagers. For example, the narrator, which is also the protagonist of the short story had just enrolled …show more content…
The first symbol is the radical change of elementary to junior high. This was the narrator’s first confrontation with change. The second symbolic object is the arroyo. The narrator and his friend Sergio constantly visited the arroyo so they both can feel themselves. In the arroyo they can talk using the words they want (bad words) without an adult confronting. They find the arroyo as a way of avoiding reality. The grinding ball could also be considered as a symbol. The ball is a symbol of childhood. The narrator and his friend Sergio think that the ball can’t be taken away, neither they childhood, so they decide to hide it and bury it. Another symbolic object can be the golf court. In the golf court the narrator and his friend Sergio could happily act like children without anyone judging. They thought it was like heaven. The final symbolic object is the lion. The lion could be used as a symbol for their adulthood. The author’s strengths include a strong example of symbolism, organization, and humor. He used 5 symbols in the whole short story and he explained them one by one. …show more content…
Sher used simple words that a child could read, but a child could not understand the whole text. The author also used several sensory details. We can see this in “…it hit the ground more quickly than I had expected; that, combined with a feeling that he could hear everything we said, made him suddenly closer, as if he might be able to see us. I wanted to be very quiet, so that if he heard or saw anyone, he would not notice me.” Also, we can find imagery details on “she stood up and took in the whole sky with her blue eyes, making sure.” and in “…the well was too dark for that, too deep, even when the sun was high up, angling light down the stone sides like golden hair.” Themes for “The Man in the Well” could be the innocence and cruelty of children might bring negative consequences and the hardness of gaining trust without Knowing and seeing a
While reading different stories, you can find many similarities between the texts. For example, Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe are two stories that have many similarities. Throughout the story, the characters have many of the same traits. Similar events take place in the two stories. All these events lead both stories to a tragic ending. Stories can be similar in many ways. The characters, the setting, and the story line itself. Stories can also be very different. One may talk about an event that will break your heart, while another might bring a smile to your face. The two stories The Man to Send Rain Clouds and Old Man at the Temple have many similarities and differences in their settings due to the place, time, and culture.
Symbolism is one of the most effective and powerful elements in writing. We see various examples of this all throughout "The Things They Carried." Symbolism enables us to tell a story one way, while all along trying to say another. I believe Tim O'Brien has achieved success in doing so in "The Things They Carried."
In the first story i read the sound of thunder the technology was more advanced than the others i have read. Also in the second one i read the foghorn the location was in the present and on earth not located in the past. Lastly the story all in a summer day was different because the characters were not dealing with a beast they were each just dealing with time. This proves that each of the stories had many differences.
The presence of symbolism throughout the novel is undeniable. Each of the symbols in the work are representative of a certain aspect of the characters lives. Dreams showed readers the desire of characters to escape their realities. The twins that Senora Valencia gives birth to are clearly meant to represent the neighboring nations of Haiti and The Dominican Republic. Water is primarily symbolic of life and death, but in this case readers are expected to come to their own conclusions regarding the river. Using these symbols allows the author to make discrete yet important additions to her writing without disrupting the format of the novel. Aside from serving as a benefit to the authors writing style, they can also be seen as an artistic addition which brings the entire novel to a different level. The use of symbolism in The Farming of Bones is not only extraordinarily well written but also completely essential to the story as a whole.
...e of the meanings to be determined by the reader, but clearly conveys the meaning behind others. Such variety provides something or someone for any reader to relate to. Symbolism, hidden or obvious, serves to connect the reader with the characters of “The Things They Carried” and follow their development with interest and ease. In many cases, symbols answer the question which the entire story is based upon, why the men carry the things they do.
Symbolism is commonly used by authors that make short stories. Guin is a prime example of how much symbolism is used in short stories such as “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “Sur.” In both of these stories Guin uses symbolism to show hidden meanings and ideas. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” there is a perfect Utopian city, yet in this perfect city there is a child locked in a broom closet and it is never let out. A few people leave the city when they find out about the child, but most people stay. Furthermore, in “Sur” there is a group of girls that travel to the South Pole and reach it before anyone else, yet they leave no sign or marker at the South Pole. Guin’s stories are very farfetched and use many symbols. Both “Sur” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” have many symbols such as colors, characters, objects, and weather. The four types of symbols that Guin uses help the readers understand the themes in her short stories. Although her stories are farfetched, they need symbolism in them or the reader would not understand the theme; therefore the symbols make Guin’s stories much more enjoyable.
Symbolism is an important aspect in stories, whether big or small. Symbolism makes the reader think. It is used to represent something but does not reveal itself right away. Symbolism adds creativity to an already creative piece. Throughout a novel a reader may spend his/her time trying to conclude what each object in a story represents. Though not all stories have symbolism, those that do possess more excitement than those that do not. In the novella Aura by Carlos Fuentes, there is an extensive use of symbolism. James Hall wrote the article “Why You Should Use Symbolism in Your Writing” on symbolism that helps to describe why Fuentes’ use of symbolism is important in Aura. Fuentes uses symbolism to hide the climax of the story and also to
The two stories, not only have differences, but also have similarities. Some examples are, they both take place in England. In both stories, people also suffer starvation. People in these two stories are also Native American.
Robert Browning's poem "The Pied Piper of Hamelin: A Child's Story" details the strange occurence in a town called Hamelin. This poem is a retelling of a popular piece of folklore about the real town of Hamelin in which children did actually disappear. Browning credits that disappearance to the character of the Pied Piper -- a figure wronged and who retaliates by taking children. In this essay, I aim to explore the depiction of the Pied Piper. He is a character that works on both the levels of child and adult. I believe that Browning is intentional with his descriptions of characters throughout, and I first want to detail Browning's descriptions of the adults and children in order to better understand how the Piper overlaps both classes. Then, I will determine the ways in which the Piper acts out traits of children and adults. Finally, I will conclude with a brief reference to the poem's function as a whole and its relation to the Pied Piper depicted in the piece.
Writers often use symbolism in the story to give a more vivid description rather than just saying, pictures are a perfect example. Symbolism is the art of using any object, place, name or anything that represents something rather
The symbols, themes, and overall mood from each of these stories were great influences on the overall similarities between each story. The meanings of all of the items they held, their transition into adult hood, and the analyzing of their pasts in hindsight makes each story very similar to one another and thus gives reason for comparison. This journey that each of these children went on was a last taste of innocence before hitting the harsh true world of adulthood and the journeys that they went on will also be attributed with the great memories they provided for each of these characters, much like in real life.
The aspect of the John Steinbeck novels, The Pearl and Of Mice and Men, that is most comparable is how, in both books, Steinbeck denies the main characters of each book, Kino and George and Lennie to change their role in life or to beat fate. Steinbeck’s grim outlook of life was perhaps brought on through his early failures and poverty, because all three of the pre-mentioned characters had opportunities to change their fate or role but failed. The elements of discussion are Kino, George and Lennie, a comparison and a contrast.
Aside from the conditions, which lead to the creation of these works, they share a number of other common threads. Symbolism aside these works are very similar on the surface. Both are a collection of seemingly disjointed images, which when put together by the reader or observer serve up a strong social message. That messages being that the wars and conflicts of the times have twisted the world. This is reinforced by the contorted and misshapen images in both works.
... and other treasures, or escaping an immense pendulum with the help of hungry rats. The other similarity I noticed is the writing style of Poe. He holds back information in all the stories, we do not know from who was the letter stolen or why Montresor vowed revenge on Fortunato, nor why the names prisoner was sentenced to death by the Inquisition.
In conclusion, these stories are very similar in many ways. Out of all the themes that could be used to compare the two, the most important ones are hatred, manipulation and hatred. Hatred is disliking some one or something and there are many characters that dislike each other. Manipulation is using your creativity to come up with a way to get someone to believe something that is not true. Lastly, jealousy, which is wanting something that someone else has and doing things to get it which is what Iago did in the play and Fernand did in the movie.
