Joby from The Drummer Boy of Shiloh and Patsy in The Finish of Patsy Barnes are similar yet different in many ways. Joby was a drummer in the civil war and Joby was a poor African American who had a dieing mother. Both had hardships but their hardships were drastically different. Joby and Patsy were immensely different in their attitude at the beginning of the story. Pasty was a troublemaker with little fear while Joby was fearful of the war ahead of him. Near the end they were very similar. Both of them became more mature at the end. When Patsy rode the horse, Black Boy, that’s dam was the horse that killed Patsy’s father it took courage and he had to do it to save his mother's life. Joby was faced with the challenges of war. When the general
came and talked to him he matured and became bold when he found out the importance of his role. Patsy was at a time after the civil war, but many were still racist towards African Americans. Joby was fighting to stop slavery. To do this they both had to make sacrifices. Joby had to leave his family and risk his life while Patsy had his mom’s life in his hand while he is risking his own life to save her. Racism towards Patsy and his mother caused all of this to happen and racism caused Joby to join the war. Pasty and Joby where both similar and different. They both risked their own lives for the sake of others. They were risking their lives for a different cause and for different reasons but they were still doing it. Racism at the time caused both of the events in one way or another. Overall they were both heroic young men who had to mature to defeat their obstacle.
Both these stories have many similarities, since they are both about Dr.Daniel Hale Williams. Both books include telling us what Dr.Daniel is most known for. He is most known for conducting an open heart surgery in 1893. They also mention his hospital, “Freedman’s Hospital”. His hospital was established for all races, even former slaves. A key fact is that Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was an African American. This is important because there were not a lot of African American doctors back then. Though both these stories have similarities they also have a lot of differences.
After years of surrendering her dignity in the name of a constructed love she is free to be and to find herself after the death of her second husband Joe Starks, or “Jody”. Her hair symbolising her woman-hood is let down to be free after she burns the head scarves that symbolically and literally hid a piece of herself from the world she wanted to be a part of. While janie sacrificed her dignity and her morals for Jody she was not sacrificing in order to live by what she values most, it was for survival more than want. However, we see her true need for real love when she begins seeing Teacake and risking multiple aspects of her life for him. Janie is a lighter skinned woman, putting her in a higher social rank due to the racism infringed on people even in the African American community. She has a good amount of money in the bank and she has a rather high social ranking due to her deceased husband Jody being the mayor of the town prior to his death. These factors all lead to Janie not only being an upstanding member of the community but also a very desirable woman for a number of men in the town. Teacake on the other hand is nearly the opposite. He is very dark skinned causing bias’ against him and his relations with Janie. While much of the town judged behind her back on this aspect one character, Mrs. Turner,
have a different story behind them but share similarities, such as them being authors, the
Of least significance to Janie is her first husband, Logan Killicks. Hurston uses pathos to show that Janie and her first husband are not meant to be even though society thinks otherwise. Nanny thinks that Logan is really made for Janie, but Janie doesn’t love Logan. Janie tells Nanny, “Cause you told me Ah
Is sacrificing passion for a special someone the best thing in the long run? In the story “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant” written by W.D. Wetherell the young and naive narrator chooses a girl over his life long love of fishing. Wetherell uses internal conflicts with the narrator to increase the conflict and suspense. Due to Sheila Mant’s shallow personality and impulsive opinion the narrator lets the biggest fish he has ever caught go because he is afraid of what she will think of him. The narrator’s feelings for Sheila Mant go away and it makes him regret his decision of letting the fish go. In the story “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Mant the narrator made a long term decision on temporary feelings and emotions.

America have a long history of black’s relationship with their fellow white citizens, there’s two authors that dedicated their whole life, fighting for equality for blacks in America. – Audre Lorde and Brent Staples. They both devoted their professional careers outlying their opinions, on how to reduce the hatred towards blacks and other colored. From their contributions they left a huge impression on many academic studies and Americans about the lack of awareness, on race issues that are towards African-American. There’s been countless, of critical evidence that these two prolific writers will always be synonymous to writing great academic papers, after reading and learning about their life experience, from their memoirs.
Society continually places restrictive standards on the female gender not only fifty years ago, but in today’s society as well. While many women have overcome many unfair prejudices and oppressions in the last fifty or so years, late nineteenth and early twentieth century women were forced to deal with a less understanding culture. In its various formulations, patriarchy posits men's traits and/or intentions as the cause of women's oppression. This way of thinking diverts attention from theorizing the social relations that place women in a disadvantageous position in every sphere of life and channels it towards men as the cause of women's oppression (Gimenez). Different people had many ways of voicing their opinions concerning gender inequalities amound women, including expressing their voices and opinions through their literature. By writing stories such as Daisy Miller and The Yellow Wallpaper, Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Henry James let readers understand and develop their own ideas on such a serious topic that took a major toll in American History. In this essay, I am going to compare Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” to James’ “Daisy Miller” as portraits of American women in peril and also the men that had a great influence.
The novel Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, and the song Eleanor Rigby, by The Beatles, have characters that are very similar. For example, no one will come near the creature that Frankenstein made, just like Father McKenzie’s sermons in Eleanor Rigby. Just like Eleanor Rigby, no one will attend the creature’s funeral, which exemplifies their loneliness. The characters from each novel and song share common societal issues such as being forgotten and being alone.
The most obvious way they are alike would be their last name. They both have the last name of Hutchinson. Tessie’s name is based off of Anne Hutchinson’s name. Anne Hutchinson was unable to change her church leaders minds, so she was banished from her colony. Tessie couldn’t convince the people of her town to save her life. So they were both “banished” from their communities. The people of their communities provided no help in saving them. Tessie and Anne were both killed by other people. Tessie was killed by the people of her town. Anne was killed by the Indians after she moved to New York. They both thought differently than their communities. Anne Hutchinson was considered a heretic. Tessie was considered a “rebel” because she didn’t consider
The truth about literary characters is that even though most of them are very different, many of them may still share many distinct qualities. In the pieces A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, and 1989 film Dead Poets Society, there are many characters that are very similar; from their personalities to what they do and what they believe in. Finny, from A Separate Peace, is similar to Neil, as well as to Mr. Keating, from Dead Poets Society, for different reasons. Plus, Gene, from A Separate Peace, is similar to Todd, from Dead Poets Society. These three sets of characters from these two different works all resemble each other in their manners, beliefs, and even their hobbies.

What do a trained assassin and a little boy with disabilities have in common? In my opinion short story characters have a lot in common, and are easily compared. A few things that Ivan and Doodle have in common are they are both “Slow”, Loyal, and had a sad death.
For the two movies that I decided to compare and contrast Heathers (1988) and Jawbreaker (1999). Both films are in the genre of dark comedy and the sub-genre of popular teenage girls being killed by their popular girlfriends. The typical characteristics of a genre of a dark comedy would be a tragic event occurring more than likely towards the beginning of the film, an attempt to cover up the tragic event, and then the resulting effect it has on the characters involved. Most of the time, the comedy comes from the character’s often horrible attempt to cover up what has taken place. Although this is the case, the comedy can come from other places such as in Heathers when J.D. gives Veronica the finger and she shoots it off.
Unfortunately, Hally?s mood changes drastically throughout the play. When his mother calls from the hospital with news that his father may coming home, Hally quickly becomes very sharp with the two black men.
