There are many great concepts or takeaways from this seminar I could use as an example, but none more important than taking chances or listening to your gut instincts. Jack DeWitt and Edwin Craig understood this idea more than most, as it pertained to their dreams and professional goals. Additionally, the passion and drive of both, DeWitt and Craig, would be the catalyst which in turn sparked the sensation of the Music City. As a Nashville native, I never truly understood the rich history or “roots” of the city around me. Although I have always been proud of my city, I now have a deeper understanding of her struggle throughout those early years.
Moreover, I have found where my passion for music and community actually stems from. I would
As Professor Tolson explains the shocking story of Willie Lynch, he explains that the actions of Willie Lynch were “diabolical” meaning pure or extremely evil. Mr. Tolson used that term to describe Mr. Lynch and other slave owner’s method, because only someone of their nature could think of these ways to undermine and degrade the working mind of their slaves. Willie Lynch used his methods to gain and have full control over his slaves. His methods were extremely evil, but very tactful. His methods worked because slaves become weak in the mind like Mr. Tolson explained, and eventually the slaves fall victim to learned helplessness. Learned helplessness can be described as a human being experiencing a painful event and is unable to escape or avoid
“The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving and “The Devil and Daniel Webster” by Stephen Vincent Benet are short stories that both have their own unique events about how the characters made deals with the devil. They also have different actions for the turning point in the story. The Character of Tom Walker and Jabes Stone both have unique lives and personalities which I think would brings a great topic to compare and contrast about. Tom and Jabez have different settings but then comes together to create similar events and outcomes.
The person who has had an impact on myself, and the music industry, is Vida Sparks. Today she is the manager of Flyte Tyme Studios and Productions, and also acts as the executive assistant to the Presidents and owners Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. I interned for Flyte Tyme my senior year of undergraduate to meet my business internship class requirements, and I loved it so much I went back the next year just to volunteer for fun! Vida Sparks demonstrates many characteristics that I believe make a successful and effective leader. Throughout our readings, the three styles that I thought best relate to Ms. Sparks are the skills approach, behavioral approach, and path-goal theory.
How would one feel if one came face to face with the Devil himself? Would one run away screaming or would one let the Devil change their views of the world? Gary and Goodman Brown both had different experiences with the Devil resulting in some of the best works of fiction ever wrote. Gary met the Devil as a young boy who feared him unrelentingly, but Goodman Brown talked to the Devil and let the Devil change his life and the viewpoints of people he knows. I plan to discuss on how Gary, from the short story “The Man in the Black Suit”, and Goodman Brown, from “Young Goodman Brown”, dealt with the Devil and compare their encounters together.
At times, I noticed that the mayor would have probably been more attentive hearing from irate citizens than listen to Armenta trying to get clarifications to C-5. Unexciting as the council meeting agenda items might have been, it was still fascinating to see local government at work in such an orderly, proper fashion. We may disagree on particular ordinances or agenda items, but we will do so in an appropriate way that does not disrupt the city at large, and even though the topics of discussion were mostly mundane, students should still at one point or another witness their local governments at work. Doing so leads to a greater understanding for how day-to-day city improvements take affect and how important it can be to voice your opinion and be a leader within your community.
Although Saturno and Jack are placed in different situations they end both end up showing what they hidden characteristics they had all along. For Jack it is his wanting for power, and for Saturno it is that he was just like the other men Maria had been with. It is because of these situations both characters show this hidden characteristic dramatically.
Do the events and trials a writer goes through effectively make their writing style change? Both Jack London and E. E. Cummings were literary giants for their own times. Both had different life events, grew up in different settings, and had different influences in their lives, but how much of a difference does that make? Londons Call of the wild is regarded as one of the best naturalist writings that not only was a big hit for naturalists, but for every generation afterwards. Cummings The Enormous room, shows the crucial punishment of a soldier who is confined into a room in a concentration camp in La-Ferte mace, normandy. Cummings book is based off of his real life time experience in a concenctration camp in which he endured many difficult conditions. What life, and era events caused these two well known writers to write these stories?
As Shanna-Kay’s supervisor, I have seen her work with a talented group of students in way that inspires and encourages, but also challenges them to think about how they can be their best and serve the community in the most positive way. Throughout the year, she sought advice on how to best meet the needs of these students, how to empower them, and generally how to support them in their attempt to be present and a part of a community that always needs the presence of a hall council wanting to grow the
It is a minimal step, but at least a start toward trying to keep musicians
During this course, I have learned that no matter how simple or basic a change may appear to be it requires planning from of every aspect. Someone once said if you don’t prepare, be prepared to fail. This has been a life lesson because one of my shortcomings as a leader is that I tend to not do in-depth planning and just forge ahead; this has caused failures in my past.
Music has always been an important part of my life. Upon entering the fifth grade, my parents bought me a flute, at my insistence. After moderate success playing the flute, I saw greener grass on the other side of the musical fence. Singing just had to be easier than making music with a long metal pipe. My perception and reality did not exactly match. Singing has its own subtleties and complexities which are not readily apparent to the casual observer. Abandoning the flute for singing, I began taking voice lessons in the tenth grade. My voice teacher was very experienced and encouraged me to pursue my interest in music beyond high school. After much deliberation, I decided to major in voice during college. This path would be fraught with unforeseen difficulties and exciting challenges.
...thers is our love and drive for music, with a vision that goes beyond the average persons thoughts on music. As a progressing music educator, A cheesy phrase that a lot of us use is “ music has to choose you you can’t choose music” and I believe it is true there are a lot of people that try to make music before them but it does not work unless they have the drive and will to practice for hours at a time just to get a 4 min pieces up to where it may be performance ready or to be the person that will sit with a child sounding like a dying duck just to help them succeed at something they want to do because you know in the long run even though sitting there is hard to do the student will someday be a musician and may be the one to change music forever. I can now see myself becoming more and more like my community and appreciating my surroundings and people even more.
In order to write and perform this speech, the students will need to use the values that they have gained from their liberal arts experience. These values are described in William Cronon’s work “Only Connect…”. Just some of the values to be of use in the students’ situation are as follows: they can talk with anyone, they can write clearly and persuasively and movingly, and they understand how to get things done in the world (Cronon, 3-5). These will all be very useful as the students start out to write their speech. The students will not be shy as they stand in front of a vast audience full of people opposing their views and stance on the local art center. They will stand strong as they clearly portray their stories of self-regulation and overcoming their underprivileged backgrounds through the means of their polymath qualities. In telling their stories, the students will be able to clearly lay out their points of view in a way that will persuade the audience to want to save the local arts center by gaining the support needed by the community in order to obtain the grant that can save the arts center. The students will be able to move everyone listening in such a way that the audience will
The largest and most active Future Business Leaders of America chapter in the state of Kansas happens to be in my high school. This prestigious title has come from the hard work and determination of students, like myself, to give back to my community. Since my sophomore year, I have held numerous leadership positions in this organization, such as local treasurer for one year, as well as the Wellsville FBLA President, Kansas State Treasurer, and Mountain Plains Regional Vice-President’s Assistant for two years. I have also filled leadership roles in National Honor Society, Kansas Association for Youth, Student Council, sports teams, and yearbook. Being elected to these positions has taught me to handle responsibility. I have spent countless hours chairing committees, organizing events, contacting sponsorships, volunteering, and much more. I have even been called a “workaholic” from time to time. Many people may believe the hours I put into this organization are a waste. I would argue that to my grave. FBLA has paved a path for my future. It has helped me expand on my love of business, public speaking, leadership, and community serv...
