In both Hamlet and Don Quixote we find many characters that fashion themselves in different ways in order to gain something from the situations they are put into. These characters include Rosencrantz and Guildenstern found in Hamlet and Sancho Panza and the Priest in Don Quixote. In Hamlet two characters tend to stand out as people who have become accustomed to self fashioning. These two characters are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. When these two men are introduced in the story, they both have just arrived at the castle to meet with King Claudius and Queen Gertrude. King Claudius and Queen Gertrude know these men are good friends with Hamlet, and know they can be used to diagnose the problem afflicting Hamlet. When you first meet these two men you realize they are not coming for wealth or riches. They are coming to serve orders of their King and Queen and to visit their good friend. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern move from friends to guys looking for money, while Sancho Panza goes from a man looking for nothing but money to a friend, and Sancho views himself a very close friend at that. All the men refashion themselves for some for of gain. When we think of gain, we tend to think materially. In the case of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern it was for material gain that they changed who they were. However Sancho Panza refashioned himself so that he gained friendship. In the end of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern because they refashioned themselves into people who wanted a material gain, they lost their lives. Sancho however because of his refashioning he gains a great friend and wealth that he never expected. Then there is the Priest. His gain in the story was purely in himself. In the play Hamlet written by William Shakespeare, the character Hamlet is a multi-dimensional character with multiple personalities that give the play a greater depth and perspective. Through his monologues and soliloquies, many different personalities of Hamlet are exposed, including his three basic contrasting personalities: clear-minded vs. troubled, action vs. inaction, and obedience/innocence vs. revenge. Throughout the story, both contrasting personalities are depicted by both Hamlet himself and other similar foil characters who are in similar circumstances but react in drastically different ways. Three such foil characters are Horatio, who shows a clear mind in the midst of his troubles, Fortinbras, who chooses action over inaction, and Ophelia, who depicts innocence throughout the midst of the chaos of the play.

Furthermore, as each outcast appears to achieve their struggle against society, the authors begin to differentiate in how they present them. As Shakespeare and Brontё show Hamlet and Heathcliff negatively, Kesey reveals McMurphy as a saviour and hero amid the ward. As the play develops Shakespeare explores Hamlet’s decent into madness to challenge the conventions of the archetypal hero. To start Hamlet is the typical misunderstood tragic hero, but Shakespeare implicitly begins to develop an immoral and threatening character. Whose inhumanity is truly revealed in Act 5, Scene 2, where Hamlet explains how he sent orders for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to be “put to sudden death, / Not shriving time allowed” (V, ii, 46). The changes of all of these characters was highly important in terms of the plot of the movie. The film shows how all these completely different people changed so they could come together and fight for a cause that they all believed in, and it shows how they underwent that change. This shows us how it is possible for people to come together, no matter how different they are, and fight as one for a cause they all truly believe in.
Initially being sent by the King and the Queen in hopes of helping Hamlet with his “depression”, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are already seen as puppets. As the play progresses, it is revealed that the boys are being used to spy on Hamlet for the King. Hamlet eventually catches on with this, and begins to play around with them by giving them false information: “Sir, I lack advancement,” (3.2.368). Referring to his line to the throne, Hamlet lies to Rosencrantz knowing that he will return this false information to the King. The reason Hamlet does this is to give power to the King by letting him know that his status is not at risk of being taken away and handed down. Hamlet realizing that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are not loyal friends, he admits that he believes they should be killed: “Those bearers put to sudden death, not shriving time allowed,” (5.2.51-52). Regardless of whether or not Hamlet was the bad guy in this friendship conflict, he still creates this sense of authority to the audience as if he can sentence anyone to death if they cross him.
