In regards to the idea humans can be together, it is believed that it is impossible for different people to live and work together without betrayal. Kofi Annan says “We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race”. This statement emphasizes that individuals are all the same race; people may look different but we all are humans. Two authors in this unit also argue that individuals should find common ground. In “A Quilt of a Country”, Anna Quindlen argues that will unite when in a critical time or crisis. Also in Eboo Patel’s blog he talks about how all humans should work together to create a better tomorrow. Both of these text help the reader understand the message behind Annans …show more content…
quote that we can live as “one human race”. Yes, individuals can live as one human race because individuals will protect each other from dangers and will make a better tomorrow that everyone could enjoy. In “A Quilt of a Country,” Anna Quindlen argues that America shouldn’t work as well as it does. She states that “America is an Improbable idea. A mongrel nation built of ever changing Disparate parts,it is held by a notion, a notion that all men are created equal…”(Lines 1-3). What this means is that all the americans in America are different from one another and still can work together believing not one person is better than the other and where you come from doesn’t change the opportunities you get. This matters since it shows how humans can live together without the idea of hating one another because of race, skin color, language or religious background. If they can do it in America, they can do it in other nations around the world. She also stated ,“Terrorism had lead to devastation and to unity”(lines 60). This means that humans would protect each other if there was any threat. This matters since it symbolizes the idea that they will unite to protect each other from the common enemy. In the end America does work well and efficiently to protect and help everyone there. In Eboo Patel’s blog “Making the Future Better Together” he writes on how if humanity would work together we could have a better future than society being apart from each other.
In his blog he states “In this new nation, the new president saying people would have their identities respected, their freedom protected, and their safety secured.” This means that the nation’s only goal is to have a society that respects one another, and that is determined to protect each others natural rights . This matters since it shows how the government wants to work together with everyone to protect the natural rights of man (and women of course). He also brought up “ the man who welcomed Jews and Catholics into the nation, the man who spoke of a government that gave no bigotry…”.This meant that George Washington was a man who didn't care about religion to let you into a country of freedom and that protected your rights. This matters since it shows that in the past while some people judge you from religion ,others didn't care about what religion you believed in, for example while the union army burned the pope in effigy, George Washington however and this practice because he respected the catholics and it didn’t seem to be well for America's image since in the Bill of Rights it clearly talks about freedom of Religion as the first
Amendment. Someone could most likely believe that this statement is absolutely wrong and that humans cannot live together as one human race. There example may be every war and revolution we have ever had in this planet. They could even say that the World War 2 was one big presentation of why 1 human race doesn’t work just like we hope it would. However all the wars the nations have had is the greatest example anyone could ever provide , since it shows groups working together to fight for what they believe in. It shows the determination of all those who believed in a different idea so much that they were willing to give their lives to see that idea thrive. So next time that someone uses war as an example of why one race doesnt work, remind them that the war was people working together to make what they believe in happen. To conclude, humans absolutely can live as one human race since in reality a lot of countries work together to protect one another and according to the final debate we don’t even get paid for it. So yes humans can live as one with no money given to each other for protection since They already do it already in America by protecting other countries. In the end, it is possible but other beliefs on laws and rights sometimes gets in the way.
I determined my decision based on Eboo Patel's story, "Making the Future better Together". Patel explains that the first president of the United States supported Jews and Catholics. Despite the various religious and ethnic groups in the new nation, Washington supported their rights because "he was going to need the contributions of the willing groups in America." Eboo Patel also states, "America's
President Obama sat down with the President of Turkey and told him “We have a very large Christian population, we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation; we consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values” (White House Press Release). Although the United States has a large Christian following we also have many religions within our culture; with an ongoing conflict against citizens that are nonreligious, Atheist, Agnostic, etcetera. The two words that were added to the Pledge of Allegiance proves the favoring of religion in a secular government. Even though the pledge does have a loyalty amongst the majority of citizens, we should remove the words "Under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance because by removing the words "Under God" it will give equality to everyone, hold us to be a Secular Government, not a Christian Nation and ?
In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, two sisters want the handmade quilt that is a symbol of the family heritage. Alice Expresses what her feeling are about her heritage through this story. It means everything to her. Something such as a quilt that was hand made makes it special. Only dedication and years of work can represent a quilt.
...hat there are some people who he has been jailed with, who he has walked the streets with and those who have risked it all are the ones who paved the way for the others. In paragraph 42 he links everything together. He no longer makes it a simple issue of ethnicity. He has made it an American issue, therefore uniting all Americans together under a common cause.
In his brief response, President Jefferson sympathized with the Baptists in their opposition to the state of Connecticut’s established religion. The question of this assignment is “What do you think the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution thought about the separation of church and state or about the separation of God from government?” While devoutly committed to religious liberty He deeply opposed established churches as existed in Massachusetts and Connecticut, but recognized that, as President, he had to respect them. The letter contains the phrase "wall of separation between church and state," that expressed his reverence for the First Amendment’s “wall of separation between Church & State” at the federal level. This became the short-hand for the Establishment Clause that we use today: "Separation of church and state." President Jefferson put much thought and intense scrutiny into the letter, and consulted New England politicians to assure that his words would not offend while still conveying his message that it was not the place of the Congress or of the Executive to do anything that might be misconstrued an establishment of religion. The now well-known the phrase "wall of separation between church and state,” lay
Quilt of a Country by Anna Quindlen and Making the Future Better Together by Eboo Patel are two different books that overlap with each other multiple times. Eboo Patel focuses mainly on the future of our youth while Anna Quindlen writes about our patchwork nation. In both essays you see talk of diversity and unity.
In “People Like Us”, the writer talks about tolerance and diversity in the United States. America has for a long time been cited as one of the most diverse countries. Upon investigation of that statement, one will find that it is a fact, for the country is filled with millions of individuals from different ethnic extractions, political affiliations, religion, socioeconomic status, personalities, interests, etc. However, according to “People Like Us”, instead of the population of the country uniting in its diversity and using that as a strength, individuals are trying really hard to distance themselves from others who are not like themselves, and to band themselves together with those who are like them. David
Senator Barack Obama speech, “Remarks of Senator Barack Obama: ‘ A More Perfect Union’ (2008),” President Barack Obama, addresses racial pressures, white privilege, race, and discrimination in the United States. He uses parallel constructions, as he includes the history of U.S. slavery and the trouble in the Middle East; allusion, by opening his speech with the first line of the U.S. Constitution; and also by including himself in his address as a character. His purpose of this speech is to denounce Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s, his form pastor, controversial comments, in order to, distance himself from the negative backlash and to have a truthful talk on racism and to unite the historical racial divide. President Barack Obama’s intended audience is ethnic groups, society, and economic divisions, religions, and the American people.
Washington was obviously very committed to his religion. Half of the speech is him saying thank you to the God he believed in for the peace and all the accomplishments of the country. I think it’s great that he believed in something so strongly. It really shows through that he’s committed to it in his speech.
To begin with in the text “American Flag Stands For Tolerance”, he believes everyone should be able to do as he or she believes. In the text throughout lines 28-30 in the text stated “ Each individuals is to have the freedom to develop by his or her own lights, and not by the command
When a society has witnessed a horrible happening, the society will grasp at any strand of happiness or hope it can. These strands of hope can be a concept of happiness or a chance to immigrate to a foreign country because of the ideals on which the nation was founded. In 1776, the Founding Fathers gathered to discuss the tyranny the colonies had undergone during their imprisonment by the British government. They developed an improbable idea that turned into a reality. In “A Quilt of a Country” by Anna Quindlen, the author successfully argues that America is an improbable concept by showing contradictions in the American Declaration of Independence as seen in the education program, the blends of cultures, and applications of
In his “Civil Rights Address,” he speaks mainly of the responsibility of Americans, their duty to ensure the freedom and equality of all American citizens. Through allusion he stresses the hollowness of freedom in a culture of segregation. He uses an authoritative tone, but also uses diction that emphasizes his status as a like citizen. He lets his presidency work in the minds of his audience to influence them. He refers to documents that the audience, especially at the time, would consider sacred and important. Hi...
“You need us just as much as we need you, we need each other.” These are the words spoken by Hannah when Jim, Selena, and Frank were debating whether or not they should cooperate to get help from the soldiers. Despite losing Frank on their journey to find the soldiers, they eventually find them because of their agreement to work together. Humans need to unite with one another for survival because they depend on and cooperate with each other in order to survive under harsh environmental circumstances. Humans also need to unite with one another for them create connections and bonds with others. In the novel Station Eleven, the Georgia Flu wiped out over 99% of the human population, making resources scarce. As a result, many people struggle to
His outlook on diversity is actually more in-depth than some may think. Washington took his ideas for diversity with him to his private life. One day, when seeking a carpenter, he said, “If they are good workmen, they may be of Asia, Africa, or Europe. They may be Mohometans, Jews or Christians, or they may be Atheists.” (Making The Future Better Together). Basically, what Washington was trying to say was that it does not matter who does the job, but how well it gets done. This is the case with most Americans these days also. They need a job done, so they call someone with the expertise, and that’s it. This relates to diversity because certain people of certain races may be better at things than people of other races. Without these people, America would not be in the shape it is in today, and we would be left with learning how to do jobs ourselves. Now, some may argue that we should do jobs ourselves, a way to be truly independent, as we are said to be. Although this can be considered a valid point, why do something ourselves, when we can have it done professionally at a cost? Helping others while helping ourselves. Working together and uniting as one, how we were meant to be all
The world today is not always like this. There was once a time where our ancestors fought each other to achieve the greater good for their own countries. During those dark days, the ground was soaked with blood due to the war. Today, we have come a long way since then as we manage to live in harmony despite the people with different races and cultures we encounter in our daily lives. Harmony is spread throughout the world where each nation’s and countries’ leaders work together to maintain it. However, harmony is so fragile like a glass where only a whisper could fracture it. Therefore it must be maintained and cherished. An example of harmony that exist within a multi-racial country would be Malaysia.
